Fall 2019 Psychology PhD Applicants!
ResilientDreams replied to dancedementia's topic in Psychology Forum
I see...well, too late for the application I already submitted. It wasn't explicitly in the instructions though so I guess it's all right. -
I was selected as a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

My personal statement is two pages single spaced. I don't understand why it would need a running head. -
It's also getting to the time when they're probably receiving lots of emails from potential students, so that could be playing into it too.

I'll be submitting my second application later this week guys... -
I don't think you need to tiptoe around telling people to actually do their job. I would confront your fellow students first and then if they still continue to be late/skip, notify the professor. They committed to this job, and if they suffer the consequences from not following through on their responsibilities, they have no one to blame but themselves.

Child participant recruitment has been going really slowly and it's making me worried that I won't be able to get enough participants for my thesis...
-
Yay!! I'm so happy for you.

Age is a liability for a prospective student?
ResilientDreams replied to NYCStudent's topic in Sociology Forum
The argument that people straight out of undergrad are more likely to finish a PhD because they "don't know what else is out there" makes absolutely no sense to me. I would think a non-traditional student would be MORE likely to finish because they DO know what's out there and yet have decided to dedicate time and resources to pursuing the PhD. I think it's easier for people coming straight from undergrad to drop out because they want to "explore what's out there" whereas someone who has been out of school longer has most likely put a lot of thought and effort into making this life change. -

I think it's definitely still worth a shot!! I have a similarly lopsided GRE score. -
I would send your CV.

Question about schools with cutoff GRE scores
ResilientDreams replied to ResilientDreams's topic in Psychology Forum
Thank you thank you thank you everyone. This has made me feel so much better. It really is hard not to freak out. -
I actually made some headway on my honors thesis.

Yeah, my friend who's a math major only scored 157 on quant, so don't worry about it.
-
Those are good scores!
-
I would say 2-3 pages single spaced would be good.

Hi everyone! So one of the programs I'm looking at has cutoff GRE scores for each section, which I am above. However, I was wondering how schools that have cutoffs generally view the GRE. Is it that as long as applicants are above that number they don't care about the score anymore? Or is higher better? I'm 10 points above the cutoff in verbal and a full point above in writing, but only like 3-4 points above in quant...is that going to look bad? I'm applying for developmental psych so not as much of a quantitative focus as some of the other disciplines and the rest of my application is strong (4.0 major GPA from public Ivy, lots of relevant research experience, etc.) I got As in my stats courses and have data analysis experience. Sigh. I promised myself I wasn't going to make a post like this but...I made a post like this.

Hi! I'm interested in first language acquisition, so most of my programs are in the psych department, but I'm also applying to the University of Maryland for linguistics. I'm also applying to UPenn, but for psych.
