ResilientDreams got a reaction from Teaching Faculty Wannabe in Self-care Tips/Advice
Yoga's the best! I find any kind of exercise to be extremely helpful. I personally like dance, and I've also started doing barre, which is a combination of ballet, pilates, and yoga (so all the things I love).

ResilientDreams reacted to paraent in Interview Advice
I had an interview last weekend for a cog psych/neuro program and it was far less intense and way more fun than I thought it might be. Don't get me wrong - it was exhausting (I spent all day meeting for 30 minutes each with different people), but in general I didn't feel like I was being looked at under a microscope or anything. The goal was just to have a good conversation with each professor and I just ran with that. I feel like the framework that we're going to be asked a bunch of job interview-esque questions is problematic, or at least not universally applicable. As long as you're ready to talk about your projects/experience and understand enough about your interviewer's work to ask interesting/well-informed questions about it, you're probably quite well-prepared for the interview.

I completely understand this! I only applied to Nebraska because the email I received from my POI was so thoughtful. The eventual interview went great, and I got accepted! I was not at all interested in moving to Nebraska, having lived in California my whole life, but if this is where the opportunity is, that's where I'm headed!

Just wanted to drop in and say good luck to everyone. With grad school in my rearview mirror, I can now appreciate this forum from a different perspective.
Wait a minute...am I like that guy who graduated high school and still hangs out at the football games?

ResilientDreams reacted to bloops in Anybody else applying to a PhD straight out of undergrad?
Hi everyone! I'm applying for a PhD straight after my undergrad as well and the constant sense of not being worthy of being accepted anywhere is something that has haunted me for the last few months. Almost everywhere I go to look for profiles of fellow applicants have only further added to my misery. Lack of publications, significantly less "cool" research projects, etc., just seemed too much for me to convince myself that I'd ever have a fair shot at the colleges I'm applying to. That tied along with the fact that I'm an international applicant just made matters worse. Considering the significant amount of money required for application fees, GRE, TOEFL, etc., I felt extremely guilty that I was merely wasting my parent's money on a stupid dream. However, the last few weeks have been helpful. I've gotten some (what atleast appears to be) good news from surprisingly the more competitive programs I had applied to. I guess the take back from all this is that it's not very productive to stress yourself on comparisons you make between yourself and applicants who have had more time to build their profile. While the admissions process is not perfect, I've found that most committees take into serious consideration the amount of time and the resources you've had at your disposal for pursuing research before you've filled the application form. The feeling of uncertainty and nervousness hasn't completely gone yet (and probably never will =P ) but I've found it easier to cope with this stress and the acads of my final semester now that I've heard back from the programs I applied to and come to terms with whatever work I've done as an undergrad. I hope someone can relate to this and best of luck to all you guys! Ace it!

Well, it seems like a lot of us in the Developmental thread haven't heard from many schools-- I'm hopeful that that means that many of our programs haven't finished their processes. Hang in there!

ResilientDreams got a reaction from RipCityBaby in Age is a liability for a prospective student?
The argument that people straight out of undergrad are more likely to finish a PhD because they "don't know what else is out there" makes absolutely no sense to me. I would think a non-traditional student would be MORE likely to finish because they DO know what's out there and yet have decided to dedicate time and resources to pursuing the PhD. I think it's easier for people coming straight from undergrad to drop out because they want to "explore what's out there" whereas someone who has been out of school longer has most likely put a lot of thought and effort into making this life change.

Same here! I'm also applying straight out of undergrad to PhD programs in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering. I'm starting to think "senioritis" is just code for "overwhelmed student who can't focus on classes". Lol.
