  1. Just curios as others have said that their last updated date is pretty recent. Mine shows as 11/16. Does this mean I did something wrong in my app to be made it discarded so early? Not really a big deal. Just curious if anyone has any ideas.

  2. @notthatkindofpsychology I agree with what @Psyhopeful has said. The PI will update you if there is any information to share. They definitely won't just forget about making offers to potential graduate students. I want to add that the PI is likely also anxious about getting a student to accept their offer. Asking for an update will likely not be helpful for you, and it will also likely be stressful for the PI.

  3. @Sophie Su I haven’t seen anything in the results page, but I also got an email saying my GRE had been received.

I am not sure what people have meant by mass email. All of the invites I have gotten have been personally addressed. Does it just mean that it isn’t from the PI? My gut says that when the graduate program coordinator emails about travel arrangements that is when all interview invites have been made.

Our government is shutdown so that means TSA employees aren’t being paid (and all government employees except congress and the executive branch essentially) sooo in theory they could go on strike.

This not actually what’s going on. The US is currently in a partial government shutdown. Over 60% of government employees are not furloughed or working without paychecks. That is because the DOD (by far the largest federal employer) is funded for fiscal year 2019.

To to the point, though, the problem with the TSA right now is that the employees are required to work during the shutdown (most government employees are just not currently working). A lot of TSA agents are calling out sick, so it is causing airports to close TSA check points are dramatically increasing the wait time to get through the checkpoints.

I also want to point out that the TSA employees are not exactly working without pay. They will get paid retroactively when the government reopens. It can definitely be hard on families who do not have a lot in savings, but they aren’t working for free.

  5. @junior313 Similar to what @1996kayden has said, I am under the impression (I don't actually know for sure) that different schools handle rejections differently. It seems that a few have sent the rejections around the time that they extended interview invites. My guess is that the ones that don't do this are going to wait until the official admissions offers are made and send the rejections then.

My personal opinion is that you should not ask about your application status at any point unless there is a really good reason to do so.

  6. @neuroinformagical I think  Cognitive Science programs are pretty uncommon. The reason JHU has it is for a funny historical reason that I didn't fully follow when it was explained to me. I think it has something to do with linguistics, but I don't really know. At JHU, from what I understand, the admissions process for cog sci and psych work fairly similar. The timelines are just different.

On whether you should be worrying: Different schools have different timelines, and the particular schools you applied to may not have sent out interview invites yet. You can look at the results page to see if your programs have, but I would even be a little wary about that. I saw that one of my schools had sent out invites from the results page, so I had figured that I was rejected, but I did get one a week or so later!

@round2_ I think you are right that for the most part the track (social/developmental/cognitive/whatever other name the department chooses) doesn't matter, but I think that for a lot of programs the clinical decisions are completely separate and on a separate timeline.

  7. @theremixtocognition I am also applying Cognitive Psychology. I also have noticed that there are very few people talking about it in on the forum. Why is it making you nervous?

I have been following the developmental, social, and the neuroscience threads because it seems far more relevant than clinical/counseling. This forum sometimes makes me wish that clincial/counseling was an entirely separate discipline.

  8. I have begun thinking about what I should be wearing to interview. I am specifying non- Clinical/Counseling because I think that dress for those interviews may be more formal though I am not sure. In the neuroscience program invites, they specified that the interview dress was "business casual." Is that also true for experimental psychology programs? I am a bit worried about the shoes given that there will be campus tours, and it may be cold. I really don't want to wear flats in the snow. I also really don't want to purchase different outfits for different climates.

Thoughts and advice are greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

  9. @Yiyu Liu I am not applying developmental but have been following the thread because it is more relevant to me than social or clinical. Even though I don't know you or your whole application, I have confidence that you are going to get in somewhere because you have already received an interview! Getting an interview is a great sign. There is a good chance that you will be accepted to a program if you have been invited for an in-person interview.

Also, the neuroscience programs seem to be in a race to send out interview invites first, while the psych ones are going to trickle in more slowly, so keep your head up. You got this!

Also, did you get the email from MIT? I think it was sent to everyone. Don't count yourself out for anything until it is official.

  10. Question: I have been invited to an interview at UC Berkeley (neuroscience, not psych). I live on the east coast and flying to the west coast is a bit rough. Stanford Psych has not released their interview invites yet, and likely won't until mid-January. Stanford Psych's interview date is right after Berkeley. Berkeley wants me to book the flight before the new year, but I want to wait until I know whether I will be invited to Stanford. Should I ask Berkeley if I can wait until a few weeks later to book the flight? Should I call Stanford and say "I will be in the area... "? Thoughts?

UCSD: “Don’t worry, the other UCs are much faster than us (I referenced how other UCs are sending invites already)”

I had a Skype call with a UCSD faculty earlier today, and she told me that the faculty are able to make recommendations to the admissions committee, but the admissions committee  makes the ultimate decision. They will not meet to make the decision of who to invite for interviews until January. Then the interview weekend is the last weekend in January.
