This is how it works at my current school. The department has a pool of money and the professors without tenure have priority in order to help them achieve tenure. After that it goes by who has students currently. My current mentor still has two current grad students while others had only one, or had just graduated their last and so told me that it would be unlikely they could take on another unless no one else wanted one, or they could scrape up funding from other sources to fund one. They did not think that would be likely.

Would the person who had a phone interview at Colorado Boulder be willing to share their POI initials with me in a pm? Did they say anything about on campus interview invitations? Thanks!

I am right there with you except to make matters worse, my POI has been wanting to email with me about potential research before I come to the interview. Every time I sit down to respond I feel like all the knowledge I have slips right out of my brain and I’m struggling to say something other than that it’s interesting. I am supposed to send a little blurb about myself and I have nothing to say!

I’m sure they wouldn’t hold it against me, but I would hate to miss out on things because of the strike. They’re having a department brunch the morning I leave and if I end up having to be at the airport like 5 hours early, I will miss it. Hopefully this will be resolved and a non-issue for all of us!

Is anyone starting to worry that the government shutdown and the TSA issues might mess up their interviews? I’m flying across the country for mine in less than two weeks and I’m starting to worry the shutdown will still be going on and everyone will be on strike by then!

So far I have only gotten an interview at what I considered one of my reach schools. They are very enthusiastic which I still find astounding, and in this case it definitely has to do with research fit. I had one school where my current POI knew the POI I am applying to and while they haven’t officially sent interviews yet, I don’t think it’s looking good for me and I really thought I had a chance there based on my experience and fit. So for me I say you never know. In most cases we are applying to individual real people who have their own opinions on what makes a good grad student it really depends on what they see in your application that maybe others don’t.

If you mean the University of Washington, I know of one person who had a Skype interview last week.

Yeah... I don’t know which week is the coming week. The one we’re already in, but it’s only Monday, so there’s more week left? Or next week, the actual week that is coming. ??‍♀️

Ugh. Just got my first official rejection and even though I have an interview invite elsewhere, I’m starting to doubt everything .

I heard from my POI (developmental) on Wednesday who is changing their lab’s focus and offered to share my app with the other POIs (social) I listed and anyone else who might be interested. So they are definitely reviewing right now. I assumed that everyone I listed as POIs saw my ap, but it appears that’s not always the case, so I’m grateful for the second chance at UVA!

I received my interview invite from UCLA in mid December. It was for developmental, but I think that social went out the same week.

The results page shows that it’s usually mid January.

Same. One interview invite early on (to one of my top choices, so yay) and then nothing until today when my POI asked to pass my app on to others because they were changing their research focus. One school I applied to has a deadline tomorrow, but I have seen some invites go out from a couple of my schools, so I’m anxious.

Does that mean that the people who posted that they were invited to the recruitment weekend next month have been officially accepted? Or is it only social that doesn’t interview?

I think this is smart if you know you don’t deal well with high altitudes. I don’t think you would look crazy. Even people who live there have to readjust after time away. I’m sure they will understand. I think in general being honest is best. You look crazy when you try to come up with stuff to cover the real reason. You could also say you’re coming a day or two early for vacation if you really don’t want to tell.

Oh! Gotcha! I applied to three POIs at three different schools who wrote a paper together.

I would assume they have access to your full application and can see who you listed as your PIs.

If it makes you feel better, I had two different transcript issues with two different schools. Plus another where my GRE scores were going to arrive late. All assured me that my application would be reviewed even without the files (which they did eventually get) so you should be fine. I took my GRE 17 days before most of my deadlines and the one school that made it sound as if they would throw your app in the virtual trash if they didn’t have everything by the 1st invited me to interview weekend, and my scores arrived on the 3rd. So try not to stress on that!

I’m not familiar with that program but I know that Harvard has a Media Anthropology focus in their Anthropology phd. Also, you might like Northwestern’s Media phd program. I have only been looking at phd programs so I’m not sure about the master’s stuff. Brown I think has a program too. And Michigan State has a really good Media Studies program. You should also check out UCLA.

Do you mean they made an offer to a potential professor or to a potential grad student? Did they imply that it was all of the psych departments that had just started reviewing, or if it was only social?

Personally, I would not do this. It’s early, school hasn’t even started back up yet. Unless you know that rejections have already gone out for the program I would just wait. Some people are understanding, but others might be annoyed. Especially if they are deep in a pile of applications. Is there a way you can check your status on their website, or ApplyWeb? I would do that to make sure it submitted, if you’re saying you never got a confirmation that your application was submitted. Check to see that the payment went through, but I wouldn’t contact your POI. If you must, contact the grad admissions office, but I would still wait until the end of next week when everyone has been back for a full week.

There’s a new post in the results section that says that UVA just started looking at apps. I’m assuming that’s just the social department but not sure.
