i just want to chime in here to remind everyone that grad school admissions is only one way to get a rejection. for instance:
a prof on an admissions committee could've been rejected at any of these points. i don't know if making a sweeping accusation that they've never experienced rejection will make the sting of our rejection any less, but there's no reason to vilify people you've never met. for all we know, admissions committees have little control over when rejections are sent. some the rejections i've received during this process have come from the graduate schools, not the departments. there could be several layers of bureaucratic bullshit we're not seeing.

In my opinion prestige is more important than an extra $5,000/year. Also, you cannot keep your full time job so that should not be a factor in this decision. These departments are paying you for coursework and eventually teaching to be your full time job. That is the expectation. I feel like if you’re still trying to keep a full time job then you aren’t fully aware of the scale of responsibilities you are going to have as a PhD student? It’s extensive and beyond simply attending classes.

It was via email! If you haven't heard back yet I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

I agree, PhD is already a full-time job.

I don't understand why you would want to keep your full-time job; I'm not sure this should be a consideration. Are they not both fully-funded?

At long last, my Duke Literature rejection has arrived! I had to jump through several confusing hoops to access the portal, so thank god I know what the outcome was going to be. Otherwise I might have had a heart attack.

GOT ACCEPTED AT UPENN! I'm still in disbelief. Got a phone call from the DGS, so seems like UPenn isn't closed today after all?

as my app season moves in the direction of an almost shutout, I'll be peeping this thread to see if any Rice admits decide to go elsewhere ?

I don't think I'll be able to help you, sorry, but I'll hope that we're cohort-mates! Or that something else equally great works out for you!

Does Columbia not also do as Chicago does and refer some of their applicants to their MA program? Perhaps that's why rejections are staggered.
Edit: In which case, it's also time for this meme to return--

Just dropping in to share this, in case anyone could use a pick-me-up via humorous, eccentric, and historical feline portraiture. Eulalie Osgood Grover, writer of children's books and the original cat memer (c. 1911):

Listening to podcasts to get my mind off the last of the admissions decisions. What are some of your favourite literature or critical theory-related podcasts?
