  1. @theonionring Hey! I gave the Berkeley department a call and they told me i am on the waitlist and told me my exact position. I suspect most of us who received that email are also on the waiting list. You should give them a ring and see what they say! They also told me the program has 10 spots so take that how you will. They also mentioned decisions should be finalized by end of next week.
  2. I'm also waiting on Berkeley for a different department in engineering. I feel your pain. Seems like they are making us wait a little longer than previous years. Hang in there!
  3. That’s funny you ask because I actually emailed him earlier this afternoon asking about the webinar. I will update y’all if I get a response. Also, it might be a good idea to reach out to a faculty member you’d like to work with and express interest and see if they will lobby on your behalf. Otherwise, I think it’s just wait and see at this point ? fortunately is a really big program where 30-35 people are admitted so we waitlisted folk can keep hope! If you check out the ISyE PhD Twitter from like 2015/2016, they will sometimes tweet “as of today we have ten people accept their offers!” And then a few days later “we have twenty offers!” It gave me a good idea of timelines and how quickly people accept their offers and when we can expect to hear them. When all of us get in, we gotta get together and celebrate as students!
  4. Same! I got my notification at church. Was not a good feeling. My contact told me that it’s good I’m on the waitlist and that there’s a good chance I’ll get on. Fingers crossed for you too!
  5. Hey! No updates yet but she said she recently spoke with the dean recently about it but not really sure what that will mean in terms of timeline. When did you get waitlisted? I think they also sometimes do several rounds of waitlist.
  6. That is a very fortunate but tough choice to make! I wish you the best of luck and wise advisors in making a choice
  7. Hey! Yeah I’ve been keeping in touch with a faculty there who has been advocating for me with the adcom. She reached out to me because my research interests align with her work and I wrote about her in my SoP. Seems like Georgia Tech often take many people off the waitlist so we can keep hope! It’s also a huge program (30-35 people per class). Check out the ISyE PhD twitter page. It is very very informative
  8. I do wonder if the Berkeley email we got last week was their way of telling us we were waitlisted without using the word "waitlist".. hmm.. Seems like rejections went out yesterday
  9. Same...Here's hoping for Cornell and Columbia for you!
  10. Looks like someone who got the same email has gotten in already. Hmm..
  11. Anyone get any good news yet or made any decisions on schools? I've been waitlisted from Georgia Tech, Chicago booth and Yale and currently waiting on Berkeley ieor after they sent me an email last week that my application is good and decisions being finalized soon. The wait is killing me! Getting into any of these schools would be a dream..
  12. Same, on my 4th waitlist and 11 rejections... at least i know there is one other person (on the other side of the planet) who feels my pain!
  13. Currently going through something similar. A professor told me she would recommend me for admission (but was definitely clear it was just a recommendation to the adcom, not an offer of admission). Few days later got a response telling me I was waitlisted. When I told her she said, "good, i think you have a good chance of getting in" I think some schools just use waitlists differently. I know some programs, a waitlist is basically a second round admit and just used as a safety measure not to over admit students beyond funding allocation. I would keep hope. I have been responding to my waitlists as "Thank you for your consideration. While I have not yet been admitted to XYZ program, I remain very interested in conducting my graduate studies at ABC university. Please let me know if there is anything else I can provide or if there are updates to my application status. Best regards, Calmly_Waiting." Keep hope! You are not out of the running yet. I am currently sitting on 11 rejections and 4 waitlists. I understand your pain!
  14. I'm in the exact same situation with the Berkeley IEOR program. I know some people have gotten in, but I haven't heard from them since my interview mid-January. I'm not planning on emailing yet because I'm averse to getting bad news (lol) but I think this could mean you're still in the pool! A lot of these larger programs keep huge waiting pools because if a specific candidate with characteristic A and research interest B decides to go somewhere else, they have to fill the spot with someone who has similar characteristics and interests; this instead of a ranked waiting list. 10-15 is a pretty big number! I wouldn't worry yet. In the meantime, I would suggest celebrating your acceptances. Seems like either way you will have a tough choice to make! Congratulations
  15. Yeah, I plan on reaching out once a month. If I haven't heard anything by next month, I plan on emailing them asking if I can make a self funded trip to meet the faculty and see the school. After all, if I get news on April 14, I would like to be able to make an informed decision! One of the professors at a school I'm waitlisted at (my dream top choice) told me "Good [that you got waitlisted]. I think you have a good chance" after she recommended me to the adcom. I also know this school has historically made several rounds of waitlists (once when all acceptances go out, once mid march, and once early April) so I am hoping for good news in the next few weeks...
  16. What do people generally think is the earliest one can expect to hear back from waitlists? Got waitlisted at three schools and no acceptances. Keeping all fingers and toes crossed until I finally hear back!
  17. Waitlisted... I emailed the my POI who recommended me to the admissions committee and she responded "Good. I think there is a good chance you will get it." Trying to keep positive but the wait is going to kill me! Here's hoping I hear back soonish and not on April 14 (which is good for me too!)
  18. Nothing from Columbia or Princeton yet for me. My gut is telling me MIT is coming out pretty soon, if not today. While I have my fingers crossed for MIT, I'm not holding my breath. However, I expect MIT will clear out positions at other universities so those of us on waitlists (officially or silent waitlist) can have a shot! Good luck everyone. I hope to work with some of you soon!
  19. Hm maybe you’re on a waitlist? I received my Cornell rejection so I know at least some of those have gone out already.
  20. I spoke with my advisor who is also a GT OR PhD alum and he told me GT is a large program and admissions come out as if they are rolling. He told me most responses will not have cone out yet and not to worry! Keeping my fingers crossed
  21. Yeah me neither. Man... bad news
  22. my theory is that a lot of schools keep a really large list of people waiting so that they can have diversity in their reserves. If one of their admits with characteristic A and research interest B decides to decline their offer, then the committee would want to replace that spot with a similar candidate. As a result, they keep a lot of borderline/backup candidates on a silent waiting list. Just my theory
  23. My guess is that if you have already spoken with faculty and have connections they simply don't feel they need to reach out to get to know you or for you to get to know them since there is already a mutual familiarity. Interviews are not necessarily a hurdle that needs to be passed to get admission. They are sometimes on an as-needed basis. For example, maybe they want to make sure you have the level of mastery over English that your test scores suggest (for international applicants). Maybe they want to ask you about your research either to get more context or to verify what is said on the documents you provided (ex. if you can't speak intelligibly on your research, you probably didn't have the level of involvement you claimed). If everything is already strong and they have previously spoken to you, then they might just not feel an interview is necessary. I have found that we on the grad cafe call them interviews, most of the people who have reached out to me call them "informal conversations about my application." I think interview implies a clear relationship with admission possibility where in reality an interview is on as-need basis. Best of luck!!
  24. Hey all! A professor contacted me a few days ago at a reach program asking for some additional information. She then emailed me a few days later saying that I was on the borderline and didn't make the initial admit list. However, based on my research interests, she is recommending admission for me for the final committee discussion. She stressed that this is not an offer and that my job now is to wait and let her know what the committee says. As a note, she is a more senior member of faculty in a chair position. Question: Is this typical and does this usually result in an admission? On a side note, the professor came from the same institution and engineering department that I did my undergrad work. She's also doing her work in the field in which I am most interested so I wrote about her recent work in my SoP. Thanks in advance!
  25. Seem like Berkeley IEOR may have come out (?) Anyone get any news?
