Hey guys! I have a question about SSHRC (CGS-M)... So I received an offer for an award to be held at a school that I'm not attending. Is it possible to transfer the award to the university that I will be attending this fall?- 2,510 replies

hey everyone! I just got offered a SSHRC award from a school that I unfortunately didn't even interview at and already got rejected from. I remember reading in the forum a few weeks ago that sometimes in rare circumstances, people reach out to the school and let them know that they received an offer to see if they can offer a spot to you. I know this is very unlikely to happen, but should I give it a shot? If I do, would I e-mail the grad program director or the POIs I applied to work with?- 2,510 replies

WOW this was super insightful and well-written. I've heard this so many times and it's so true! You pretty much need to have somewhat of a relationship in order to get into clinical psych- even current clinical psychologists have told me this. It really is rigged and not objective at all. It's really upsetting for aspiring psychologists but also for other fields (e.g., social work) that will inevitably become more competitive to get into because I know a lot of people who can't get into clinical psych (like me) will flock to social work, driving up the # of applications. I have reached out to profs before in clinical psych asking to work in their lab but nothing ever followed through. I'm at peace knowing I have done everything I can and I know social work is very similar and I've been accepted!

Hi all, what do you guys think about going into social work vs. psych research? I ideally wanted to do clinical and after my third year applying, I still haven't been accepted. My passion is psych but I think I really need a practical element to my career. I feel like doing an MSW at UofT will be very clinically-oriented and be really similar to clinical psych. Any thoughts?? and no I will not be applying to clinical psych again LOL- 2,510 replies

Hi everyone, I see there are many of you that are feeling discouraged, which I can totally empathize with. I applied to grad school this year for the third time hoping to get into clinical psychology programs. It is SO competitive (I'm talking 2% acceptance rate and they accept a total of 5-7 people per year ?). I didn't get into clinical again this year but got accepted to MSW at UofT. I was waitlisted at UofT 2 years ago and this year I made it. A little bit about my experience... I graduated with an HBSc. in the Psychology Specialist program from UofT in 2019. I have a very high GPA with A LOT of research experience in different labs. I worked at Sunnybrook and SickKids. I did an Honours Thesis and have a publication. Very strong LOCs. It was so frustrating and confusing to me how I never got into clinical, no feedback, nothing. IMPROVE YOUR CVs... get out there and look for opportunity where and if possible. It's not uncommon these days to apply again and again, especially with competitive programs like these. TBH, it will only get more competitive as there are a backlog of qualified applicants that apply each and every year. This year psych and MSW programs experienced a significant increase in applications because we are in a time of economic downturn (this happened in 2008 too), so all in all it was a tough year. Don't give up! Another suggestion I have is to be open-minded and think about alternative career paths. I told myself I would only apply to clinical psych for a max. of 3 times and then I would explore other grad programs. There is a reason that a door is not opening if you truly have tried everything you can to be successful. Anyway, feel free to ask me any questions if you have
