Anyone else sometimes think that their email is broken when everyone else is getting decisions? 

I was actually told by couple of DGSs themselves that this is one of the parts they look for. Even though you don’t have to write about it for paragraphs long, I think it’s necessary to mention why you want to go for a PhD at first, then you can talk about why that specific program and why those certain faculty.

I received an interview and campus visit invitation for Northwestern - LS PhD as well! 

UCSD just accepted me. The chair said I specifically would get a decision very early

I feel you. I'm in that same boat. Part of me like "I would" but asking people for late letters of recommendation and going to any school out of desperation is rough. Ofc, hasn't stopped me from googling late application dates and higher acceptance rate schools

That is me. I got my rejection letter yesterday and I am very in touch with the DGS, she told me herself that the decisions were made on Wed.

In my view, it is possible that one of the essential components of your application was lacking GRE/GPA/LOR/SOP and therefore did not meet the minimum threshold for admission. For example, often the graduate school division, not the department, has minimum GRE scores for entry to the university. So if you fell short of this, or one of the others, maybe the admission committee just rejected your application outright without further consideration.

I believe this would not be a problem if you were admitted. 
It is relatively easier for departments that do not require a writing sample from all applicants. Moreover, 20 days should not be considered so short. Many departments start reviewing applications as soon as the deadline hits. 

I just got an email from UW-Madison that they recommended me for admission!!

Just cruel to send an email like this the week I'm expecting to receive their admissions decision... just cruel

As a potentially MIT-bound nuclear scientist/engineer, I sure hope you are more precise with your work than with this forum!  

(Just joking. This is the Education board, I'm guessing you meant to post in the Engineering one. Congratulations on the interviews nonetheless!)

OMG congrats! I am still waiting on the HESA PhD!!

It was for Peace Studies + Political Science program of Kroc Institute.
Not for Political Science only.
