PhilBlast reacted to ineffective-egoist in 2022 Results
My understanding is that this is pretty normal. I heard back from two schools so far (and one of them was a notification that I was recommended for admission, so it's not even an official offer yet), and it looks like most schools notify applicants in the last week of February to mid-March. I'm hoping I hear back from a few more starting next week!

not unusual. I haven't heard back from most of the programs I applied to yet, and some of them do not appear to have sent out any notices at all.

quite a few programs are still pending results. Also, there are some who have hidden waitlists, so there's that as well. Hang in there.

PhilBlast reacted to Olórin in MA programs with strength in continental philosophy
I might suggest having a look at the grad student profiles of programs that interest you. That could help you figure out where else to apply. (Also, I second all the suggestions above.)
The MA at stony brook is probably worth looking at, although I’m fairly certain they don’t have funding.

I considered the MA at at Stonybrook - no funding except work study, very expensive living situation, and placement seemed to be very restricted. Of all the "continental" M.A.s which also have a PhD, I'd say University of New Mexico would be best.
Honestly, I think any terminal M.A. that's a good terminal M.A. overall is good for a student interested in continental, as so long as it isn't overtly hostile to continental. For what it's worth, I'm at an "analytic" program and I've taken courses on Kant, Foucault, and an independent study of Husserl, but I also have a much wider understanding of what's going on in the discipline as a whole and I know how to talk about, say, Canguilhem, to someone who has almost zero familiarity with that area. I also know more about the philosophy of cognitive science than most people interested in continental philosophy. At my program, we had a student place at Memphis which is pretty SPEP-y (as well as Irvine). Anyhow, I don't know, I'm still pretty continental-oriented and I think it was overall a good decision to attend a program strong in analytic (insofar as the division really makes sense anymore). So, I'd apply to M.A.s that are overtly continental, but also M.A.s that are solid overall. It's not a PhD program - you're only there for two years.
Also you might wanna take a look and notice that the placement record among the hardcore SPEP programs is, uh, a bit incestuous (similar relationships exist among sets of "analytic" programs as well).
And, on one final note, most younger philosophers coming out with PhDs these days don't take the analytic-continental divide as seriously as people did decades ago. Like, no one's going to become visibly upset if you mention Heidegger or whatever.

Take a look at Kent State. Full funding and good placement for SPEP.

Maybe check out this place. https://fundedphilma.weebly.com/
Off the top of my head, these are some places that stand out to me. Miami University Ohio is a pretty good MA program for Continental philosophy. Though it looks like they do require the GRE. San Francisco State is also another one. They don't require the GRE. I think funding is a little less straightforward at SFSU, but it is definitely doable. At least from what I had heard.
I know the MA program at Duquesne is perceived in continental circles as being a nice jumping pad. Their placement is somewhat decent. I had a couple of friends who went to Duquesne. But from what I understand there isn't full funding. Or only some students receive full funding. I'm not too sure.
Also, don't feel like you can't apply to analytic programs because you do continental philosophy. If there is a faculty member at an analytic program who does continental and can help you with what you are interested in, you should apply there. The writing sample you come out of the program with, will generally be fine when applying to phd continental programs.

Rejected from Boston College's PhD program, but accepted into the MA program. I'll post here just for the good vibes. Still waiting to hear from ten programs, but this is a good start I'd say! I'll have them in consideration. Hopefully more to come soon.

PhilBlast reacted to philosofrey in Considering BC MA in Phil?
Im glad to hear you'll consider it. It's a weird department (like any other Phil department lol) but if you seek people out they are almost unwilling to let you fail. A lot has been happening surrounding the MA, they are trying really hard to make it better. It was never bad, just...not funded. Biggest issue that has lead to is there being a fair amount of super rich kids in the program who don't understand why some of us have to work. That has really changed in the last two years though. When I first started, I said there was no way in hell Id apply to the PhD: I'm just a poor kid with a shit ton of debt trying to break into the ivy tower. But, since then, I've gotten support both in the department and just through my jobs at BC. They really care. Now, I'm honestly thinking BC will be my top choice next year. The largest complaint I have is just that its not funded. I'm jealous of the people who get to take advantage of the incredible opportunities there while I'm working three jobs.
But Ive had professors be super generous with me on getting my schoolwork completed. Ive been told I can audit classes and get profs to write letters of rec so that I don't have to pay for them outright...they just offered me another year to help prep my apps and take more analytic classes since I wasn't really ready to apply to PhDs this year...like its been worth the money for me.
I know A LOT of PhD students who came out the MA if not the first year after finishing then at least the second. And what I meant by my top post was that, if I knew there were jobs I could apply for that had tuition remission...then my life would have been much easier. There aren't many of them, they are competitive, but they exist. you can also pick up a temp office job for like 20-25 hours a week and as a BC employee you get full tuition remission. So like... perfect? No. But worth looking into... yes.
But, if you don't show an interest in connecting with profs, or you never show up to the grad lounge (which is always popping with metaphysical debates lol)... then yeah it is a cash cow MA. BC like anywhere else will take your money and Never look back. But, if you show you give a shit and you put time in...it can be extremely rewarding. You just have to learn early how things work and buy in. If you don't, then the jesuit thing will seem stupid... the theology thing will seem stupid... you will find things to be upset with. I did that for a year... it sucked...wouldnt recommend it. Just buy in and take what they can offer which if you play your cards right can be the world.

So I was originally accepted to the M.A. at Western's Center for Theory and Criticism, but I received a surprising email from the director that they have decided to admit me directly to the doctoral program?? Idk, I got my hopes up too many times this cycle so I need to email to confirm, but I believe a tentative 'yay' is warranted nonetheless!

Awesome! Congrats! I'm waiting to hear back from them so I hope I have a chance. I noticed me and you applied to a lot of the same places. Maybe we'll cross paths some time, since we also share the same interests as well.
