  1. I understand how you are feeling; but, you worked your butt off to get to this point! You need to reward yourself. You need to be confident!! (I am telling this to myself as well) As for the high attrition rate, dont worry about it for now. You are capable of producing good work! remember that! After all, these professors in adcomm chose you! Your fellow cohorts may have the same feeling as the one you are having now . You'll do great work. Just keep telling yourself that. Eventually, you'll live up to that. congratulation on the admit!
  2. I think so; because you are free for them . It'll give you more flexibility in finding supervisors, research (no--TAing), etc Wow, I envy you congrats on the funding!
  3. This, anyone? I have the same question. I actually visited an apple store to check out ipads. I dont like the fact that it reflects light back (glare). Even in the store, I need to find a perfect angle to be able to read from it comfortably. So, kindle 2 wins?
  4. Please dont get offended here. I am genuinely curious. Dont you think appealing your case may pi*s 'em off? How did you go about it? Did you simply tell them that you want a re-evaluation after receiving a non-acceptance result (waitlisted, rejected, etc)?
  5. Golden Monkey, I'd choose fit and happiness over prestige. Unless, the quality of the research differs greatly. Then, I'll "suffer" at the prestige school. I actually wont suffer if I like the research. If I were you, I'll keep my options open. Why dont you visit the prestige school (in the case of acceptance), it may surprise you! You may like it better there! Congrats on the acceptance!
  6. I know I am going to sound stupid. I am, after all, a computer scientist . Anyway, my site is hosted at google sites. I have been trying to find this tracking feature. I googled and checked google sites manual. How did you get this visitor tracker feature? I know I can add a third-party visitor tracker, but I am wondering if google sites has one. I know I am missing something huge here.
  7. seconded ... more time for doing research
  8. My top choices are deciding the final admit list this week. Hoping for the best.

  9. This, I could not have said it better myself
  10. I dont drink either. It's perfectly fine if you only get a coke or something like that. I spent some time in the industry and did fine alcohol-less during all of those business dinners, business trips, company parties, etc. Now, I am back in the academia, I feel no peer pressure to drink alcohol during social events. The key is that you must be comfortable with yourself (i.e., not drinking while others are). As others pointed out, you are dealing with a group of grown-ups now, they wont tease you (I think). Just be yourself
  11. LOL.. Oh I need to borrow that baby now!!! He's so cute!
  12. Someone used to call me "shasha" and I kind of like it. "koe" means "my" in a language that I know. So, my user name means "my shasha". I just think it's cute!
  13. 26 years old. I spent some time working (well, still is) and got a master degree
  14. Thank you so much :-). We will prevail people!!
  15. OP, sorry to hear that. Now I also worry about my interviews . I am very excited about their programs; that made me even more nervous. I used to do that! Now, I take my time before answering any question. It also helps that I am a teacher now. I practice answering questions every day
  16. LOL.. hahahah. This has got to be my best rejection letter. Ok postcom (posting committee??), I understand your decision. I did my best to get in.
  17. yep. I'm in the same boat. There's nothing else we can do except for waiting . I am just distracting myself by doing other things (and probably should be other than posting in gradcafe) .
  18. thank you soo much!.. I love this particular part
  19. Yes, you should let them know. As others pointed out. You should tell your recommenders when your first admit comes and write another email in April summarizing all of your acceptances and rejections.
