Yeah that's what I'm wondering as well

Disclaimer: I have no actual knowledge and am just operating on the information I have before me.

It sounds like that's the case, unfortunately. If it were one person receiving this email, I could be inclined to think that they were a special circumstance, but since multiple people have reported receiving this email I think it's safe to assume those of us that didn't are not getting in. I suppose there's a slim possibility they're staggering them over today and tomorrow but I don't think the outlook is good for the rest of us. There is always the possibility of a waitlist though, which of course would come later.

Just got my official rejection from Johns Hopkins, I was expecting it, so it's all good. It's nice to know for sure either way!

Still radio silence from them for me. What does this mean? Anyone else get an official rejection?

I really don't know, I really only just got it, so yours may just not have come yet, or you could possibly be on a waitlist? I hope you hear soon, I know waiting is hard.

Sorry I didn't mean for it to sound like I was asking you what this means! That was more of a rhetorical question haha

Indeed the waiting is hard, I would just love any form of contact at this point.

Do you mind me asking if the email you got was a standard form email, an actual personal email from someone, or just an email to check their status portal?

I absolutely did not take it that way, no worries! :)

It was an email that told me to check the portal. I think I saw an acceptance that said they had received an email from a professor, so perhaps they're one of those schools who does not release all their acceptances at once and has POIs do it?

Thanks for the response! I checked my portal and no update there either. The more I try to understand the process, the more confused I become. I really should stop trying to read into things but, as I'm sure everyone here feels, when this much is on the line it's so hard not to!

Well, if that's the case, I'm glad I got some acceptances first or this would feel crushing..but who knows.

Hopefully I'll get an acceptance soon, in that case. ? Loyola (probably my most realistic PhD option) has had cancelled classes the past couple of days so I'm sure that pushed back the process. :(

What do folks think — if I still haven't gotten a decision one way or the other from Northwestern after the flood of decisions this morning, is it kosher to call them today?

I'm in the mind of "do not give up until you actually get a decision."  A lot can happen between now and April 15 (or even after). Unfortunately, rejections take a while to come around because the program needs to finalize their acceptance and waitlist lists before sending their list of rejectees to the Graduate School or department administrator who will then send those "form" letters. As I've stressed before, keep your eyes forward to a life as if this whole process has never happened.

This is what I'm afraid of... that because I haven't heard from anyone, they're all rejections :(

Nevermind, official rejection just came from Hopkins.

Sucks to have the first notification this cycle be a no, but given that acceptances already came out I was prepared for this. Oh well, still got 8 more to anxiously wait on!

Aah, sorry to hear that, really hoping you'll hear good news from one of you other schools! I have a feeling next week will be a big one in terms of decisions.

Anyway, gonna turn in for the night and indulge in some escapist fiction while trying not to obsess over the fact that I didn't get an email from Harvard.

The last two years Rutgers has sent out decisions on Feb 14th so I know at least that school tends to be later than January.

Thank you! Rutgers is my #1 choice so that has me a little calmer.

I only know this because I was rejected in 2017 and a friend was accepted in 2018! I got a few acceptances already but I think it will be hilarious if they reject me on the same day again!

Best of luck!

I'm hoping next week will be a big, exciting week. I'm expecting to hear from Columbia, NYU, and maybe Michigan. I'm hoping to hear from Loyola Chicago-- they said they'd get back to me by mid-February.

This is definitely my experience too. A very good friend didn't hear from NYU until mid-March.

First letter is a rejection. It gets harder and harder every cycle to eat these letters and still keep your head up.

To everyone who received an acceptance, congratulations! Your foot is in the door. Get ready to kick it in!

Hi everyone, I’m new to the thread! (It’s a relief to know I’m not in this endless waiting alone!!)

I’m an applicant from the UK, and just recently finished my MA at a university in London. I specialise in late 18th century immigration and constitutional law.  I’ve applied to Georgetown, NYU, Johns Hopkins, UPenn, alongside 3 unis in the UK.

I just got a rejection through from JHU and it’s really worried me - you hear so many stories of people being overly ambitious and not getting in anywhere! My undergrad scores were okay, but I finished my MA with a distinction, my GRE scores were decent (q-158, v-161, aw-5.5), and I have some (hopefully!!) pretty good recommendations. I’m starting to worry that I maybe should have applied to some lower ranking programmes. When do you tend to hear back from most universities?

Like i said, I’m from the UK, so the US application process seems very elusive here! I’d really appreciate any guidance!

Thank you in advance!

Checking the result section of this site should give you an idea of when your schools have sent out results, historically.  Sorry I don't have any specifics but we're not applying to the same schools so I'm not really sure when your schools notify applicants.

I saw that on the results page and was thinking of you! Hope you're doing ok -- you're gonna get to visit Duke really soon! ❤️

Hello!! I'm from the UK too! As far as I know (from the wiser in this thread, and my Yale-educated advisor at my undergrad), results come out whenever, so best not to worry/think about it. NYU releases them by advisor all the way to March, if not later, and Penn has sent out some interviews but no idea what's going on there. Where did you apply in the UK (if you're ok saying? PM is fine!)

I've no idea about Georgetown's History programme, but I was on their campus this summer and it's sick. DC in general is incredible. Their deadline was too late for me, otherwise I would've seriously considered applying, it's just so nice. Good luck!
