Is it more difficult to get accepted into a fully-funded university program than it is a "top-tier" astronomically expensive private art school program?

Based on my experience, I feel like it's harder to get into the fully-funded university programs... I got into two top-tiers, but no fully-funded universities yet.

Thank you both!! My agitation is caused by the fact that at the interview I was told interviewees would be contacted within the week. I am about to accept an offer so I want to make sure I am operating on a correct assumption ?

ah, Columbia didnt tell me they would contact me in a week, but calart told me they will contact me in a week and nothing happened yet. So dont worry, mica told me they will contact me in two weeks and ended up contacted me after a month, we will be ok!

There could be a delay because columbia is rapidly shutting down its campus and the visual art studios and facilities . I don’t know why it would specifically impact photo (and I didn’t get an interview) but it could be causing a delay.

My friend is in the Landscape design program right now, she told me they're still getting lectures online, no one's working at the moment since it's their spring break week. So I wouldn't expect anything from them this week.

Is the office still taking phone calls? Maybe they would know. Campus moved online on 3/9 so if the week overlapped with that timeframe it could be covid delay.....maybe. Hope you get in if that’s what you want.

You should check Hunter’s homepage. Or, to save you a trip, the campus is closed today except for essential personnel. Must explain the no-show. Sucks that they didn’t let you know. Maybe it was last minute? Still not cool.

I had the exact opposite, I got into fully-funded state schools but not top-tier schools.

Has anyone else had the experience of applying for a dual degree program and being rejected from one of the programs and then accepted to the other. I applied to Purchase's MA Art History/ MFA Visual Art dual degree program and then was rejected from the MFA program and then accepted to the MA in Art History.

They should be having more interviews as I think my friend's is tomorrow. I would email them.

I just feel like they should email me, but maybe like you said it was the last minute, so..., it must be a chaos everywhere.

wow. okay, this is good to know. that sounds so stressful, I hope they email you back soon. They should be working remotely as most schools have just moved remote but maybe they had to coordinate moving everyone out of their studios etc.

Does anyone know anything about deferring for an MFA program? Is anyone else thinking about it? I am not feeling terribly optimistic about going to school in the fall, or even moving in August, with all that is going on.

I'm thinking this will have passed by August/September.... or at least hoping...

China more or less got it under control in two months, but I feel like North America is not being as organized...

Does anyone know if Columbia ever gives out financial aid packages that cover more than just half of the tuition?

I got my undergrad at Columbia but had a lot of contact with MFAs. One painting MFA told me he had a full ride but also people will just BS about this. My understanding (purely from chatting with MFAs) is that printmaking gives more than 50% but the other disciplines don't give much more than 50%.

Hey! I'm sorry that happened and hoped they responded to keep you informed. I was one of the people supposed to interview in person on Saturday at Hunter , but I ended up doing my Skype interview yesterday with the head of the art department. It was originally supposed to be with two other faculty members but it seems they have adjusted due to everything going on. Some of the questions included "why hunter" (obvi), "what books are you reading and why", and "where do you see your work going". ?

Just had my Hunter interview, but it was a cut a bit short (they are really scrambling to get to all of the other applicants who haven't gotten a call). The interview started a bit late and was 15 minutes instead of 30. I think most of the missed calls above may be because they are just really behind with everything that is happening. Hoping for the best!
