Hi all, I'm new to these forums (and the application process in general) and I'm wondering how competitive some of these programs are?

For reference, I only applied to Brock (I was looking for an online program with a practicum that's only one year to fit my future career plans and Brock was the only one that checked all the boxes) and I was wondering how my chances are?

Academics wise, I graduated with a BSc in Kin (year 3/4 GPA of 3.81 & 3.97)

Profession wise, I'm currently working for the Public Health Agency of Canada & have few years of combined experience working (admin) and volunteering in hospitals. I've also worked as a personal trainer for a few years + some other physiotherapy volunteering (my healthcare professional reference was from a physiotherapist) & community stuff but idk if this is really relevant to public health.

Curious as to what everyone thinks, am I probably ok or should I also apply to another program as a backup just in case?

This year is my first time applying to an MPH program and I hear it is quite competitive. You have a really solid academic and professional background so you're chances of getting accepted are higher than for example myself who is just finishing off an undergrad. Besides these two categories, your letter of intent is also an important document that the admission's committee will take into consideration. If there is another program that interests you, it wouldn't hurt to apply for that as well. This way you won't regret not applying in case you don't get into Brock. All the best!

Hi,

I am new to this forum. I have only applied to UWaterloo MPH.

I have a PhD in bioinformatics, and I works as a bioinformatician/biostatistician since 5 years. I want to make a career change to public health. I have completed several online non-credited courses in epidemiology for public health.

I hope I will get an admission offer from uwaterloo.

Good luck to everyone!

Well that's reassuring! I also submitted mine late Nov but my last reference was submitted right before the deadline. So I guess they're updating based on when they received our complete application. Thanks !

My references submitted their letters on Dec 3 while I submitted everything else on Nov 17. Mine still stuck at prescreening. It is for Health Promotion distance learning

Hey everyone!

I just got an email from McGill today saying they will "recommend" to the Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies that I be admitted into the MScPH program! Wondering if anyone else has received this email as well? I wasn't expecting to hear back so early, but am still waiting to hear from a couple of other schools as well.

That sounds like great news! I've applied to McGill as well but haven't heard anything from them yet. I'm becoming very eager though lol.

Hi everyone!

All the best to you all during this application season! I was just wondering if there are any applicants here who considered applying to MPH programs in the US? Does anyone know if it would be possible to work in Canada with an MPH degree obtained in the US?

Congratulations! That is exciting to here that they are beginning to send out acceptances.

Do you mind possibly sharing your stats/background for other applicants?

Thanks and congrats again!

Thanks! And ya for sure.

Graduated from UVic this past April with an honours degree in Biochem and minor in applied ethics. Graduating GPA of 8.8/9 (93% overall, UVic has a weird scale) and got some academic scholarships over the course of my degree. Currently working as a research assistant in a Biochem lab (cancer signalling focus). I have around 2-3 years research experience cumulative, 2 of which were in my current lab (volunteer, summer work term, honours, and now research assistant) and also did a summer research position with canadian blood services! I have 2 part-time jobs, one as a fitness instructor and the other doing image description for a visually impaired student. I also have a background in competitive sports which I worked into my LOIs and that's about it!

Wishing everyone good luck!!! Hopefully we hear back from more schools soon :)

Mines has! Has yours?

No. There's a green circle for pending, and all the item status' are complete, but it still says the application is incomplete at the top.

Thank you!! I only recently graduated in June of 2020 so some of my professional experience is still but fingers crossed both of us get some good news in the next few weeks! All the best :)

Congratulations on getting in!! I also applied to McGill and am still under review, but it is encouraging to hear that they have started the process of letting people know. Hopefully we all start hearing back relatively soon!! I wonder how long it is that we'd have to wait in the "recommend for admission" status before knowing the admission. Do they tell you that they will contact you at a later date confirming the admission or is this kind of the final/seal the deal notification? Thanks!

Has anyone applied to Queen's MPH or Memorial University's? My application still just says "submitted" and I'm wondering if anyone's has changed?

In the letter it says "You will receive notification from GPS with their final decision within the next few weeks" however I ended up receiving the final decision later that day! They should send you an email and say that a significant decision has been made on your application and they redirect you to Uapply to check.

Hi everyone. I'm wondering if you guys get accepted to a school that is out of your current province, are you likely to relocate amidst covid even if the first few semesters are online? I'm currently living at home, and want to move out very badly, but I'm unsure if it would be the best move financially. What are your thoughts?

Hi. I don't know how useful my opinion will be since this is a case-dependant situation, but if I knew guaranteed that classes would be online for me, then I would not move out. For me, the pros of not moving out are: saving money (the biggest reason), being in an environment that I am familiar/comfortable with - especially with a pandemic (my home province/city), not many people living in my house (no noise), my parents don't hover (enough privacy + food is always there, mom does my laundry sometimes etc). Ultimately, though, if I'm already paying tuition, then I don't want to spend money on rent/food/travelling costs/etc. when I don't have to; also, for me, I would be able to move out as soon as I graduate with my savings (assuming online school continues).

Cons, of course, would largely revolve around lack of privacy and potentially feeling trapped after you've already gotten used to some level of freedom (or haven't and really want to); but with a pandemic this is almost universal. If you are in an abusive or toxic environment, however, the cons definitely outweigh the pros, in my opinion.

Restrictions in varying provinces could also sway your opinion. For example, if you're from Ontario, like me, and you have the opportunity to experience a "normal" life again (in BC, for example), then that may be worth it.

Sorry for the block of text, but like I said, it's really case-dependent. Ultimately, you know what's best for you.

Thank you so much for such an in-depth response! I really really appreciate it :) "I would be able to move out as soon as I graduate with my savings"...this really stood out to me! I guess a big part of my decision will also depend on where I get accepted, IF I get accepted. Thanks again, you're awesome!!

Hi! Good luck to everyone applying this year!

I'm graduating in Dec 2021 and will be applying to MPH programs for Fall 2022 and just have a few questions.

I'm in honours sociology at UBC with a 3.7/82% GPA in my last two years but hoping to go up a percent or two in the next two semesters. My thesis is a quantitative study about mental health and immigration (am presenting at 2 conferences and hoping to publish too). My grade in lower level stats was only a 77 so I'm trying to upgrade it in a higher level stats class this semester to hopefully a 79-80 at least.

My ECs include leading my own research team for a peer support mental health service at my school where we are creating a mental health education and outreach guide with information and resources for students, research student for a NGO's chapter at my school (more human rights and social justice focused rather than health related), VP of my sorority for a year, and two years as a cheerleader on my school's team. I'm also trying to get involved in more community based work this summer though because I feel like that where I'm lacking for my ECs.

My top choices are U of T (social and behavioural health), Mcgill (population dynamics or health promotion stream), University of Washington (social and behavioural health) as well as UBC and SFU (as I'm from Vancouver).

Would anyone be able to let me know if I would have a chance of getting into U of T, Mcgill or UW? I've been having severe anxiety about this since last year and need to feel like I can take a breath again. I feel like my grades and ECs are still pretty below average and am wondering if anyone has advice on how to make myself more competitive for these programs? Thanks in advance!
