Hi all! I searched the forum and I could not find a topic specific to Film & Media Studies and/or Cinema Studies. I named the thread with both titles for the sake of keyword search. As you all know programs adopt different names. Please use this space to discuss applications, decision anxiety, research and whatever else you see fit!

I applied to these programs:

  • UC Berkeley
  • Yale
  • NYU
  • University of Washington, Seattle
  • USC
  • University of California, Santa Barbara

I've only heard back from UCSB and unfortunately I was rejected. I'm holding out hope for the others. It only takes one school!

What schools have you applied to?

Thanks for starting this thread. I'm waiting to hear from Northwestern's Screen Cultures program and UC Berkeley's Film and Media Studies program.

Best of luck to you! I thought about Northwestern but I had to be respectful of my wife. She supports me pursuing a PhD but wants at minimum to continue living on the coast. East or West, it doesn't matter.

Do you know when Northwestern has historically informed applicants?

So happy this thread exists! I applied to UC Berkeley Film and Media Studies as well as UCSB Film and Media Studies. I saw that several people had heard back from UCSB either admitted/rejected but I haven't heard back at all. I am so curious as to what this could mean and hope to hear back from them soon...

Thanks! Best of luck to you too! And I understand... location is for me also an important factor... after all, one would have to stay in that place for 5 long years (at the least!)!

It seems that if they are interested in me, I should be getting a call for interview soon. The program coordinator told me that the final decisions will be out by Feb end or early March. Fingers crossed that I get an interview invite this week!

If people have received rejections, but you haven't... I guess that can only mean good things! :)
Good luck! I hope you do get positive news soon!

Thanks for starting this thread! I've also applied to Berkeley's Film and Media. From the results people posted in the past few years, it seems that Berkeley began sending out decisions in early February. Not sure if Covid might delay their reviewing process... Definitely feeling super anxious right now.

I only applied for ucsc. hope for the best ;-;!

Hi! I also applied to UCSC's film and digital media program. Have you heard anything from them? I talked to their graduate coordinator yesterday and she said they will send out decisions in March... but it seems that from the results in the past, people got their decision around this week and early February.

I feel shy to talk to anyone yet; thanks for sharing the intel with me.
I talked with a current phd student there last year, and it's true that they would send out decision this week and early February.
Yet, I know that Covid has impacted the process, so it might be a little delayed for them I guess.

I haven't heard back from them, so cross fingers! :)

I guess it's just the waiting game right now...

Good luck to both of us!!!

Little late in joining this thread!

Welcome everyone! I do think it's a bit premature to expect anything back. I'm surprised I heard from UCSB as early as I did. I would think on average universities may start notifying next week. I don't know if I can stand to be patient through March. The waiting is killing me as I'm sure it is for all of you :(

For those who applied for the film & media PhD at UCSB, does the program allow interdisciplinary research? For example are they open to their students doing creative work (film, interactive media, installation, etc.) during their studies along with their writing dissertations?

I'm an independent filmmaker and only applied to Berkeley and Santa Cruz because the schools indicate that they encourage intermediary practices. I'm wondering, for future reference, does UCSB have a similar approach or do they focus solely on the theoretical?

From what I understand it is heavily focused on theory and history. I also believe they had a course specifically tailored for film studies and pedagogy. It does not hurt to reach out to the department directly and ask them if they support students with your interests!

Does anyone have insight as to how many people are admitted into each PhD program annually? I've seen/heard different things. Like UC Berkeley only admitting three students and NYU admitting four students. Any info would be appreciated!

Hi everyone! Excited about this thread.

I applied to:

-Yale (English and film combined PhD)

-Stanford (Art History with film focus PhD)

-UT Austin (American studies PhD)

-UC Berkeley (Film PhD)

-NYU Tisch (Cinema Studies PhD)

-Oxford (English PhD, but secretly film)

-Cambridge (Films and Screen PhD)

-Uni Warwick (Film and TV Studies PhD)

So far I’ve had an interview with Cambridge, acceptance at Warwick, and been waitlisted at UT Austin.

I’d also be curious of anyone knew the number of places at these institutions :)

Also, this thread seems pretty US centric but I thought I’d include the UK schools just in case there are any other transatlantic applicants out there!!

I think UCB admits 3-4 but who knows!

Anybody here to claim the interview invite from Screen Cultures program at Northwestern?

Hi how's everyone doing? I'm feeling super anxious about Berkeley right now, especially with no email response from the department regarding decision notification timeline. Has anybody hear anything from the program?

When did you email them? That’s odd they didn’t reply and might mean they just don’t know yet? I emailed the department last night asking about my application (hadn’t checked the portal since submission and showed they never got my gre) and they replied back in minutes saying it’s fine since gre is not required this year.

I emailed them two days ago. Who did you contact if I may ask?

Ah I see, I mailed their generic department email rfa@berkeley! Not sure if that was the email you contacted but they were really quick.
