Hi, I just saw that someone got an informal interview invite for UOFT? Can you tell who the PI is? You can DM me!

Hi there!

Quite a few international (non-US) students apply each year and you are right, it does make things difficult when it comes to funding and admissions. As long as you have a good application and relevant experience, it is still possible to get interviews. The process is very competitive for everyone, as you well know. I'm an international student, this is my third time applying and I received an interview this year and several during the previous application cycle. I received none my first time. As a quick note - there are programs where the tuition for international and Canadian PhD students is almost the same with the exception of some fees, so those programs are more able to fund internationals. Increasing the number of (well-matched) programs you apply to might also help. To how many programs did you apply?

Hi, thank you for your reply!

I looked very carefully with the funding and made sure to apply to places where they specifically mentioned that they'd be able to fund international students. I also think due to COVID-19, quite a few universities and even a few profs I emailed said that for the last two years, funding has been difficult for international students (For eg, for 2021 cycle, UoFT did not even consider international students). I am assuming C19 played quite a role here.

Wow, third time applying needs some huge amount of persistance. Hats off to you. I hope you get through this year!

I have applied for 4 universities only and at master's level, what about you?

You say persistence, I say stubbornness :)

UofT wasn't taking internationals even before the pandemic, so it must be a funding or a different issue. I applied to 7 programs this year. Applied to 4 the first time and I think over 11 the second time. I already have a master's so I am aiming for some PhDs as well. This is the time of the year when things start moving regarding interviews, so fingers crossed! Best of luck!

That's a lot of applications!

I am looking forward to hearing back! Best of luck to you too!

Hey! You could probably check the "Current Student" pages of the program websites as they'll typically post timetables for the current school year (which will give you a sense of what next year would be like). Many programs also have a program calendar/handbook, which also gives information about start dates or any orientation/expectations required of you prior to September

Thank you! This was a good idea, not all of the schools I applied to had anything helpful, but a couple had orientation dates from this past September so I can use that as a guide!

I'm in a program currently, our orientation to the university was for all graduate students in june virtually - then the program specific orientation was the week before classes started. A lot of students arrived within only a couple of days of the classes starting and missed the orientation too - I think there is no expectation to be there until your program officially starts - but also maybe plan for some time to move and adjust to your new living environment before classes are thrown at you.

Thank you so much for your insight! It's nice to know it's not the end of the world if you miss orientation, but would probably be useful. I didn't even consider virtual orientation - that would be helpful too, I wonder if they'll continue offering virtual options into next year.

Just curious if anyone who applied to Dal has the application status as "Incomplete items outstanding"? I did interview with them, so I'm not too concerned that my application is incomplete if I made it that far. But I was just curious if anyone also sees that on their application portal. Thanks! :)

Does anyone know as to when do universities typically announce whether they will waive the GRE for an upcoming application cycle? With COVID cases going up again, I'm debating whether I should take a gamble and not study for the GRE this summer for next year's application cycle (Mostly for Regina and Lakehead which are my top 2 schools).

Dal is notoriously difficult to send docs to--try emailing Peggy who runs admissions!
