Yea, that one caught my eye as well. I would say Chinese undergrads have all the fun, but I'm not sure that's strictly speaking true. I had to be boring and just go with 'modern and contemporary Chinese history.' I'm trying to do amicro-study on the grassroots rural reforms that started around 68, especially rural healthcare, and then the reforms of the reforms from 83-89. It's also my thesis topic, so so far I've just been reading entirely too many People's Daily articles from the Cultural Revolution. It would definitely be nice to get a chance to do interviews for a change. And I say the 'bleak and dusty' north, but I'm actually trying to do my research on the north face of Taishan. Still not quite Nanjing, but it would definitely make my stay more interesting. What's your international history project?

That's cool, change at the local level is a fascinating thing to look into in China. I went with international history because I'm looking at transmission of Islamic knowledge between inner Asia, India, and China in the MIng. A lot of the Islamic literary production was based in Nanjing, and they have faculty working on it so I thought it would be good to be there. But hoo boy I need to get some practice with speaking before I get to China. Been too long.

Congrats, I love Hamburg! Which hostel are you in?
The Generator Hostel/Hotel by the Hbf. So far I'm a big fan of it, and an even bigger fan of Hamburg :) And congrats to everyone else who has found out for all countries!!! It's hard to keep up with the thread since all I have here is my phone and intermittent wifi, but I love seein all the news here and can't wait to meet the other Germany ETAs!

Hi all!  I was selected for a Germany ETA but am an alternate for the USTA.  So, Germany here I come!  Congrats to others who received good news this week, and good luck to those still waiting!

Congratulations to all those who received good news today! As for those who didn't, hang in there, you all made a valiant effort and it is impressive to have come this far.

I am still in the waiting game.  I am hoping now that Germany has heard, the gates will be open, and notifications will come flooding out.  I am still curious if anyone has received notification from countries that don't have their own Fulbright committee?  Also, a question for Germany grantees, what did the subject of the email look like and where did it come from?

The title was: "Fulbright Application Status"

The sender was: "Fulbright U.S. Student Program" (cdoble@ as in Cara Doble from IIE) (Although at the end of the e-mail it was signed Daniel Kramer of IIE)

I stayed there too! I remember watching the Germany- Greece eurocup game there and everyone going crazy when they won. Good times!

Congratulations! I'm sure Germany will be a great experience. Two friends of mine also found out today that they are alternates for the USTA.

Omg... I was in an important business meeting and opened up my email while I was thinking about the Fulbright and saw one with the subject "Your..." (even though that's not supposedly what the IIE email is, but the january emails were), and I got lightheaded immediately... Turns out it was just about my retirement benefits account -.-

Found out this afternoon that I didn't get the Taiwan ETA  . Oh well - I told myself in advance that if I didn't get it I'd follow the advice I got (while lurking) from you guys to apply again in the future. See y'all in the 2014-2015 thread!

:( Bummer, so sorry to hear you didn't get it! But definitely apply again, it took me two tries to get it!!

hey all!

I just wanted to put it out there that I recieved news of selection for an ETA in Thailand today. Are there any others out there for Thailand? I was at work when it happened and between the shaking and screaming... it got a bit awkward, and had to step out for some air, haha.

To those who have received alternate status or were not selected, saying the following won't probably help make you feel better but I hope it does in some way : I just wanted to say that if you really want to have this opportunity, are passionate enough to reapply and have the time to do so, DO IT. This was my second time applying (I applied to Venezuela last year and did not even pass through the screening process) and was able to give myself more time to focus on the application and have other people look at it. I also made time to look at the personal statement/statement of grant purpose of previous winners, which also helped a lot.

Good luck to all those that are still waiting.

Okay, serious question: For those of you that have a steady job at the moment, when do you plan on telling your employer about your award? I would like to try and reapply when I get back, so I definitely want to stay in good standing. I'm just afraid if I tell them too earlier, they will let me go. On the other hand, if I do tell them earlier, they might be more willing to work with me!! My boss is seems pretty understanding most of the time, so I hope things will work out..
Any thoughts?

My email is tormenting me this morning.  I click refresh and it shows I have a new message! My heart skips a beat only to learn that Fastweb has told me they have matched me to more scholarships.  I am not sure what I will do when the actual email comes...
