Canadian 2014 SLP

CONGRATULATIONS!!! I just saw your (I think) post in the results search. I'm happy for you! I'm a repeat applicant so I am really hoping for this year! I didn't hear anything, no. Did they say anything about when they will be notifying Audiology?

Thanks for the congrats. They didn't mention when audiology would be notified. Sorry I can't be of more help in that department. I'll be thinking of you throughout the week though.

For those people who have not gotten in this year, keep your chin up. I certainly know how hard rejections can be. I was turned down 4 times before I was finally accepted to my program. I was only applying to UBC because I can't leave Vancouver. My husband is in school here and I managed to work my way into a solid job so I wasn't comfortable leaving all that behind for a different city.

I'm not sure about other programs but as far as UBC goes, if anyone is planning to apply to that program i have two pieces of advice.

1. Get your GPA up. They care a lot about grades. I learned this the hard way. My grades were decent but not amazing and I took classes at a few different schools before and after undergrad. I had to take at least one extra course each year between applications to build up my average. Athabasca was a good choice for me so I could keep working.

2. Any chance you get, shadow a professional or volunteer for someone. UBC requires that you shadow an audiologist and an SLP anyway but I found that knowing more people in the community really helped me feel connected to the industry. Those SLPs have been where we are and they know more about the programs than we do. They are rooting for us and can help you figure out what to do differently next time.

OK three pieces of advice. Don't give up! If this is what you want and you know it then keep trying. The world needs passionate people.

I have also applied several times. I applied to UBC in 2011 and to UBC, UWO, and Dalhousie last year. I was rejected at UWO and Dalhousie and waitlisted at UBC. Because there are even fewer programs for Audiology in Canada, I decided to apply to the States this year and was accepted to one program so far. Canada is insanely competitive so don't let it get to you if you haven't gotten in yet. 

 

Congratulations again CleverUsername, you SO deserve it, especially after applying 4 times!

They say last two years, but they also look at all prereqs regardless of when they were taken from what I understand.

 

And if I got in, it MUST be last 2 years.

Thanks I am realizing that I have a lot of options still so I am ok... I haven't heard a "no" yet .... But also--- I want to specialize in Voice disorders .... UBC might not be the best for that anyway..... I only just started this journey and like so many of you who have applied numerous times ---- I am pretty darn persistent !! In the mean time I have two big auditions coming up so acting can be my back up plan !! ( most actors have a " real" job back up plan .... For me acting is my income so I will be ok for now )

From my understanding (and I may be wronggg!!!!), in order to apply you MUST have a minimum of a B average over your entire undergraduate degree, however, when considering your application they review your subGPA from the last 2 years, as well as your prereq average. At least that was my understanding !

The way I understand it is they look at the whole thing. They ask for a separate sheet of prerequisites so I'm assuming they focus in on that too. Not really sure what's considered most important though in terms of grades/references/statement of intent.

Yep. When your decision is ready you get an email notification saying "Significant decision made" that directs you to log in to uApply to retrieve it. It's the same place where you submitted all your materials.
