What are your 4 dream jobs? Are you qualified for any of them?

• Foreign Service Officer (would have to take the FSOT)
• Private Investigator (has little/nothing to do with my academic background - would require some training and experience beforehand)
• ESL instructor (actually qualified for this) 
• Community college instructor (Master's degree required, Master's degree currently in progress)

There's only one, and I'm way under qualified for it. 

 

I would love to work as an Astrophysicist for Space X or under the tutelage of Elon Musk. Alas, I'll have to settle for future Occupational Therapist.

1. Research Scientist: Semi-qualified after my M.S. but I'm a PhD student, now. I love research.

 

2. Molecular Biology Professor: Already qualified as a lecturer and instructor, but I want to also be an educator after my PhD. Probably the most fun students for me are those who are just getting introduced to molecular biology.

 

3. Public Science Outreach Lecturer and Middle/High School Outreach: Qualified, and I have done it a ton, but not for compensation. Public science knowledge is awful and scientists aren't the best at putting science into a perspective understood by the general public as well as those who are not in science. We genuinely need a better public education. On top of this, we need better science education in schools, so I would love to be able to continue taking science experiments into the schools (PCR, Electrophoresis, etc that schools can't afford to teach). I went to local schools during undergrad, and those students genuinely got excited, and it showed in their grades. Hands on is expensive and nearly impossible... but is the best way to learn.

 

4. Science mentor/advisor to undergrads in education, outreach, research, and general mentorship (including grad school application discussion): I have already done this as a volunteer for undergrads, but I would like to be able to continue this. We need more people doing this because too many of us are starting out in science with goals other than med school and have no idea what we're supposed to do and how to start. I was lucky enough to have someone to help point me in the right direction, and I think other students deserve to have this, too.

 

A tall order, but I'm hoping I can accomplish at least 3 of these, although I will be happy with the first two.

I'm not sure if I have 4 but I'll see what I can come up with, in no particular order....

 

1. Published author of books (projects must have a strong creative component).

 

2. Teach at a community college.

 

3. Service dog breeder and trainer and provider of animal-assisted therapy services using dogs.

 

4. Social worker in a psychiatric hospital.

 

5. Flipping houses and doing installations and home repairs, kind of like Mike Holmes.

 

6. Spanish translator and teacher.

 

So I've got 6. Hopefully I'll be able to get around to doing at least 3 of those things at some point in time.

Well maybe you could get that kind of job and get your grad students to write the research proposals... I've heard that happen before (although your students probably won't be to happy about it).

1. Theme park designer. Work in progress.

2. Author. Technically yes, I am one (royalties pay bills, the Stephen King criteria for being a legit author) but I'd like to write a great/meaingful popular novel and.. not there yet but i'm "qualified."

3. Sculptor/Fine Artist. Nope, i'm actually sort of awful at it.

4. Playwright. I have written some good short works, but I need some training in order to cohesively hold together a longer format.

1. Forest Archaeologist on Tahoe NF.

2. District Archaeologist in NorCal, & assistant/associate professorship at a CSU or U (Chico, Sacramento, Davis, etc.).

3. FS, NPS, or BLM archaeologist, consulting with CRM & THPO groups on NAGPRA projects.

4. Archaeologist (permanent of some kind) on Tahoe NF, Inyo NF, Yose NP, BLM - Eagle Lake, BLM - Mother Lode, or BLM - Bishop.

 

My 5-year plan revolves around field tech jobs (crew chief, eventually) with the FS, NPS, or BLM, since I'm hoping to apply to PhD programs as soon as I've got most of my MA loan debt out of the way. I like the Sierras and NorCal, & a mix of old, older, & seriously old stuff.. & bones. I love all that public lands have to offer, but there are an unfortunate lot of absolute nitwits working for the land managing agencies, so I'm taking a "challenge accepted" attitude. Per one of my favorite movie quotes: "we can do a hell of a lot more damage in the system than outside of it." Also, I'm not sure how I feel about professorships yet, but I bet the next few years will affect that.

2. Researcher for a university. I have a far better chance with this one, I just haven't landed such a job yet.

3. The next star of Animal Planet/Discovery Channel/etc. Come on, that'd be so fun, running around the world and talking about what I love.

4. Environmental policy in DC. Not that I have any background in policy but it seems so interesting.

2. Tattoo Artist: I'm actually seriously considering this for my plan B. I can rock the arts and/or copy pretty much any image, and I've already got the blood-bourne pathogens training in! I'd also love how many people I'd get to meet. 

3. Science History Writer/Biographer: I'd need more writing experience/qualifications, but I just love the characters of old famous scientists  and how they arrived at their discoveries. 

4. Underground/anonymous graffiti artist: I'm terrible with spray paint though.. :/

The key with spray paint is not to paint how they do on TV. Short quick sprays and use of a shield to create clean lines.

1. Collections Manager for a medium-sized history museum. To match size and role I need a couple more years experience, but for a smaller museum I should be okay

2. Run a small farm (alpaca and long wool sheep). I'm okay with general farm management (the years of FFA and 4H can actually pay off) but I need more breed-specific experience.

3.  Run a small dressage training facility. As long as I don't have to be the trainer, I'm just fine.

4. Animal Costume Company. I'm embarrassingly well qualified but it's surprising how good they can be with the pony clubbers and 4Hers.
