Another thing to vent: why do people outside the elevator always try to barge in, without allowing people inside the elevator to exit first? So annoying... So annoying... I hate that! Sometimes they try to do that on the campus buses, too, and then they look really mad when there's a big line of people in the aisle trying to get out. One time at the post office (which has a really narrow staircase that you can really only go single file one), I was already walking down the stairs when someone got out of their car and then stood at the bottom of the stairs to wait for me to pass (which took about 1 second after they got to the stairs). After I walked by, they yelled "you're welcome" really loud at me. Did I really need to say thank you to them for not being rude and shoving their way past me on the stairs? I can understand if I was at the top and they waited, but I was basically at the bottom when they arrived at the foot of the stairs. ImberNoctis and Kleene 2
ERR_Alpha Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 She has made statements like, "I want to be the only girl in this group" for several times now.. She wants to be the only girl in the group... Well that's a disturbing statement. I feel like any woman who tries to join she'll just magically happen to not like... Women like this realllyyyyy bug me. Normally you don't find too many in academia but there's always a few bad apples.

I've worked with many hard-working, self-driven female scientists before and this person is definitely a bad apple lol Oh yeah, and she doesn't get along with other female students from her cohort class, I wonder why she didn't like the TA assignment she got last semester so she went and complained to the coordinator and asked to get something "easier". She went to the same school for her undergrad so she has some sort of connections. Edited February 1, 2015 by Quantum Buckyball

When I was in high school, I had a job where I was the only girl in my department (I stocked shelves and pushed carts at a local supermarket) and I truly wanted it stay that way. I had awful self-esteem and being the only girl in a traditionally male-dominated job made me feel better about myself and special. Maybe she has a similar problem.

Wow somebody must've been SUPER sensitive to feel butthurt about something like that, haha... And for the bus thing - I hate the fact that most bus drivers don't carry any change, which I realize is difficult to do since they have to keep to their schedules, but it sucks when you waste an entire $5, $10, or even a $20 bill just for a ride across the town.

No, the true is, she never wanted to go to grad school, she only did it because she didn't get in any of the med schools she applied to, and doesn't want to get a job. I am upset that she took away a spot from someone (another domestic or international applicant) who is truly qualified and deserved to be in the same program as me.

A lot of management research this isn't really a thing on average/across females, but I certainly think I've seen some individuals that fit the bill...

I also knew this one girl who would use her tone of kindness and nurturing to hide her real trait, which was her excessive pride and looking down or pointing out the inferiority of others (every time she used that "caring" tone, she kept describing herself as a thoughtful and selfless person - yes, she literally said these words, which was pretty annoying, because I, like others, saw right through her). She was also passive-aggressively condescending (while using that disgustingly false kind tone) to other male grad students' girlfriends, which of course, is discouraged if you want to have a good reputation in your department (she also was condescending towards my girlfriend as well). However, there were several guys who were completely oblivious of her trait and simply fell for her looks, only to have their hearts broken some time later... pity... Yeah it worked and she got assigned teach something easier. This bothered me a lot because she is only a first-year student and she's already asking for special treatments. One day, a professor (chair of my department) contacted my PI and letting him know that this female coworker of mine was failing his class and the grades she was making was far below the class average. Long story short, she had to submit some sort of petitions to the grad school in order to remain in the program. and yeah I noticed she tends to change her tone, and the choice of words whenever there's another female grad student in the lab (from another group), which was...very...fake..and I think other female grad students noticed the same thing as well. There got to be a way to expose people like this. I think my PI is getting tired of her though, he has been saying stuff like, "go figure it out yourself", "did you look it up first before you ask that question?" during group meetings. What annoys me the most is that everytime my PI is in the lab, she TRIES really hard to get his attention by interrupting other people's conversation or make weird noise for no reasons...I was like, "wow.....just wow"

Kleene Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 (edited) Argh, having an interview with my one and only top choice (and current institution) tomorrow! Interviews are definitely my weakest point, but somehow I made it in last year with a horrible interview so not all is lost! I did not want to tell many people about it (only two, in fact), so I have probably brought it upon myself that I cannot share my anxiety with anyone! Edited February 2, 2015 by Kleene
ilovelab Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 My lab is in the process of hiring post-docs. They are all well qualified but FML they are all socially awkward as hell. I don't want any of them to join the lab. My entire research institute is literally filled with socially awkward grad students or post-docs. I know that sounds bad. I started talking about the season 5 trailer for Game of Thrones and no one knew what I was talking about . One of my co-workers asked if it was a porno. I mean its HBO but still. I guess GoT could be a G rated porno. Also, no one understands my hatred for the Seahawks as a 49ers fan and how anything USC or Red in general repulses me as a UCLA alum. People rep the raiders . I love research but sometimes I wonder if I should have followed my fraternity brothers and joined them on the path to becoming soulless financial analysts/bankers/investors.

I am slightly socially awkward as well, but I can definitely join a talk about Game of Thrones. Sorry to hear that you feel like those candidates are not a good fit for your group. Btw, my mother does refer to GoT as 'porn'. ("Are you watching porn again?") Edited February 2, 2015 by Kleene

I think notice the social awkwardness more b/c I'm very extroverted compared to most of my coworkers who are very introverted. I suggested a GoT season 4 marathon and one of the post-docs shot it down because she had no desire to watch porn with her colleagues . And the chicken hawks, I mean Seahawks lost the superbowl. Today was AWESOME

Today was AWESOME Lol I was rooting for Seahawks because I am from around that area - but yes, it was an AWESOME game, and though I was sad, Pats did pull off an amazing move with less than 30 seconds to spare. Since this is a venting thread... I will vent about Superbowl: why in the world did they have to throw the ball when they were so close?!?
ERR_Alpha Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 I hate the Patriots and Tom Brady so much. The guy who caught the damn interception was the real MVP!! Not Brady who threw TWO of them... Sigh. well, I'm happy he finally got that fourth SuperBowl win the Giants took from them twice geographyrocks 1

I cannot stand the Patriots and the Red Sox, but mostly because the two have some of the most obnoxious fans out of any pro sports teams. So, I am not fan of the Patriots. I am also not a fan of the Seahawks, they are number two on my list of most disliked teams. I would have rather have watched a Super Bowl between the Cardinals and the Dolphins (did you google to see if the Cardinals were an NFL team ). Or the Chargers. With that, anyone who denies that the Patriots have not been one of the best teams in the NFL in the last 15 years or that Brady is not one of the best QBs is in need of a lobotomy. I mean, I hate Kobe Bryant but at least I acknowledge that he is one of the all-time best in the NBA. I do agree that Brady should not have been the MVP. I mean, that interception at the goal line won them the game. *and no, I am not suggesting that you need a lobotomy. Edited February 2, 2015 by Crucial BBQ
VulpesZerda Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 (edited) I don't think the rookie who caught the interception was expecting to get MVP of the entire game. Despite that being necessary for the win/amazing! Edit: Pete Carroll should have been MVP for calling that play :'D Edited February 2, 2015 by VulpesZerda Page228 1

That, or they play well all season then blow it to a team who's not consistently good (I love the Giants but it's so true...) For some reason the NFL lovessssss the Patriots and the Cowboys.. Probably why I hate both of those teams. Or maybe it's because my dad brainwashed me from a young age Edited February 2, 2015 by ERR_Alpha

ilovelab Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 I will never understand how ESPN and idiot broadcasters consider the Cowboys America's Team? Seriously? What have they done recently? I'm so happy the seahawks lost, as a niners fan you have no idea how satisfying it was to watch dejected fans at the supermarket after the game.
