I am weighing the cost and benefits of applying to the bsw for winter semester. It is nice that they have this option! I was also thinking it would give me some time to work on perquisites as well. Honestly, I believe that this was my weakest and most rushed application so I am trying to feel okay about it. Do you think I could contact the faculty before I apply to the winter semester and ask them which parts of my application were weak?

I can't speak to that because I didn't have the option for a January start. Did they start that this year?

Thank you so much I truly appreciate it. I felt I had the weakest application for this one because they use my overall CGPA and I didn't write about my experience using art therapy which was probably silly now that I know how much schools value diversity in experience. I am really hoping to go to school next year! Thank you for encouragement! xx

Hi @smpalesh I read on another thread about your deferral. I've been accepted to a PhD at Toronto and I am thinking of a deferral. Were you guaranteed funding despite the deferral? I could also give you more details via inbox if you can tell me more.

I am not sure! But I know that they are accepting applications in May for a January start! Maybe they are accepting 30 students per semester this time? I am really unsure of how this works. I find the Waterloo BSW website lacks allot of information!

In anticipation, I am currently researching apartments in Kitchener in case I get into Laurier  I've been trying to work out some logistics, and was wondering how familiar people are with Kitchener?

I'm a Torontonian who isn't really a driver since it's not really necessary here. I was wondering how necessary you think a car is for the program/placement? They say to try your best to have access to one, but I'm wondering if that might be something that the program just says because they can't fully guarantee a placement in the city.

This would be quiet the added expense for me so its something I'll need to factor in at decision time, should i be accepted to more than one program.

I was reading that certain professors and admissions staff suggest that if are wait listed you should try to write a letter to admissions of choice explaining how passionate you are about the school and any recent achievements.

 

What are your thoughts? is this in bad form? Has this worked for anyone?

I wouldn't think this could hurt... it's not like they're going to remove you from the waitlist because of it! Why not try?

I'm fascinated by the idea of writing to admissions, I would love to hear what everyone else says about it. My first instinct would be that if the waiting list is ranked it may not make a difference however I don't know if anything would preclude them from adjusting the ranking....

I'm not super familiar with Kitchener but I think this just depends! I'm not from Toronto and all the cities I have lived in public transportation is not the greatest. I know a lot of places recommend having a car because you may have to drive a client around or something similar. It most likely depends on where you are located in regards to the school, and where your placement is.

Yes, I agree... it could do something.... I want to know how large the wait list is! haha we will see if Laura answers my e-mail regarding that! She is not disclosing the ranking....do any of the schools disclose this?

Yeah its hard to say. I have anxiety over driving so ...blah :-P.

Must say, though, rent is so much cheaper than Toronto there! I can get a one bedroom for the price I pay in Toronto for my den-sized bedroom in a two bdrm apartment. Hurray for that! (if i get in!)

I drive so much, so thank goodness I have one thing to not be anxious about haha...it's probably just a matter of driving more and you would get used to it.

Found out that the waitlist for my program is "roughly a dozen" and I should know about movement in early April! Let us hope that yours is just as small... or smaller
