sylviecerise Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017 (edited) I am going to be extra sad if I don't get into Tyler as that's my partner's name & the "Tyler rejected you" jokes are going to be unbearable lol ... Edited January 27, 2017 by sylviecerise
MonkeyPants Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017 First interview notice came today, from SFAI. Want to see me FREAK OUT? Slowly, k-khalid and sylviecerise 3
Slowly Posted January 28, 2017 Posted January 28, 2017 Hello! Long-time lurker here. Finally decided to get an account because waiting it out alone is starting to feel a lot like sitting in a glass case LOL. Just want to know, anyone else here apply to UAL (Camberwell for me specifically), and what course? Also, 12 hours ago, MonkeyPants said: First interview notice came today, from SFAI. Want to see me FREAK OUT? Congrats!! Wow! How far ahead did they schedule your interview, and will it be in person or via Skype/phone?

The MA graphics course at CSM to be specific. I think it's quite staggered for UAL in terms of hearing back from admissions at the various colleges. If you don't mind me asking, what other programs have you applied to? Slowly 1

Yes, so I've heard. On top of that, I see we're both international students. Was their application timeline a little vague for you? Camberwell's MA Illustration page stated there was "no deadline" for int'l students (they just recommended to apply asap), though after I'd sent in initial requirements (transcript, immigration form), they replied with my PebblePad account details informing me the deadline was January 30, 2017. Did you have a similar experience? I've also applied to RISD and SCAD (both for Graphic Design) and SVA (for Illustration). How about you? Wishing the best of luck to you with your own applications

Thanks!! The interview is by phone (they asked my preference) on 2/9/17. I'll be interviewing with the program director, so I've got some time to frantically research her and plan out good questions. Wishing the best of luck to you with your own applications I applied to RCA, Glasgow and Yale (all for the MA Graphic Design programs). Aw man, I wanted to apply to RISD as well! Agreed - the application process was not detailed enough for UAL international applicants. I tried to do everything online but I was finding it a bit difficult to assemble my portfolio (I found the requirements vague). In the end I just reached out to the Canadian rep for UAL and she was so helpful - she advised me on my application and portfolio supplement. I emailed her all of my documents and she submitted it on my behalf ... It began as the most difficult application and ended up being the smoothest in the end haha. Good luck with your applications as well! Perhaps we'll cross paths in London if we get accepted to UAL!

That's good - there are actually no UAL reps in my own country; I'd searched the website and found out the one closest to me was in Hong Kong, lol. So I had to carry out my application myself. But I'm glad for you Here's hoping we'll meet each other in UAL!
turkeyslug Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 Hi there, I have been keeping tabs on this forum for a while (secretly), this is my first year applying to grad school, so I'm kind of freaking out at the moment. Any other painters out there applying to UIowa?
Cengstro Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 (edited) @pdh12 you're applying literary, no? @turkeyslug yeah Iowa! Tho, not painting -- ceramics. Im quite familiar with the department tho -- John Dilg is/has been making really amazing work (and others on faculty). Additionally, the Grant Wood Fellowship brings in a rolling cast of really great artists/teachers (they teach one class/contribute to grad workshops etc + are afforded a studio). This year Tameka Norris is there -- her work is fantastic. Edited January 29, 2017 by Cengstro
Vespertine Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 Accepted to Tyler! Only downside is that they want a decision from me within a few weeks... but I doubt I'll hear back from many (any?) other schools by then. My decision will be highly dependent on funding, so I want some options. Poodle-Doodle 1
Poodle-Doodle Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 @Cengstro Tameka Norris is pretty rad! A friend of mine is doing grad school in Ceramics there. @Vespertine Congratulations! My advice, don't be bullied into making a decision. I would try to wait out as much as possible to see what other options that are available and take the one that best suits you; come on, folks at Tyler know this. They've been to grad school. None the less Congratulations and good luck with the rest of your applications. Vespertine 1

Unfortunately Tameka Norris won't be there next year, but their Grant Wood fellows are always great every year. There's a bunch of bureaucratic bs and politics you have to deal with there tho.... I still live in Iowa City and having access to their art library post grad has been amazing. turkeyslug 1
pdh12 Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 (edited) @Cengstro Yes, I'm applying in poetry, but I'm at Iowa right now for translation, and we're working on a bunch of collaboration with the other mfa folk---the grantwood fellows are really amazing this year, and the new arts building is fancy af Edited January 29, 2017 by pdh12
pdh12 Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 (edited) @meghanmetier actually, i'm pretty sure tameka norris is taking a professorship here after her fellowship is done. i met with her last semester and she mentioned something like that!! Edited January 29, 2017 by pdh12

I hadn't heard about the Grant Wood Fellowship, that's a pretty nice perk, bringing in crazy talented artists to teach. 1 hour ago, meghanmetier said: I went to Iowa for undergrad! Moving past that...AAAAAAAHHHHH nnnnnnnnooooo I was warned by one of my professors about UIowa because he had a student who went there a couple years back, that did not like the grad program but that was printmaking and as I understand it had something to do with the other students. I was really hoping it was just printmaking, I even emailed current painting students to double check out of paranoia, they didn't say anything about it... This sucks I really liked their painting program too... Thanks for the heads up meghanmetier I will be sure to keep this in mind! Edited January 29, 2017 by turkeyslug

"references architecture" During undergrad that phrase was thrown around so much that I am always suspicious when it is used. Architecture is both a broad and expansive word and field.

I was referring specifically to the structures that appear in some Sarah White linear pyrograph work that resemble abstract scaffolding or just construction sites in general. I probably didn't use the best words the first time, no worries no offense taken!

Oh that's fucking awesome. So two years ago, there was a protest following the non-indictment for the cop that murdered Eric Garner. The next day, a fellow (not black) installed a sculpture of a KKK outfit with a security camera inside on the spot of the protest to gather reactions. With no context on the spot to explain the "piece." Traumatized black students who's initial reaction was the KKK has a prescence in campus. Refused to apologize and work with black student groups. And brought a lot of discussion about critical engagement in the dt department with no resolution. They also gutted the intermedia department this year, which was the first of its kind. Also was the only department that focused on critical engagement and theory. So.... Iowa def needs people like Tameka on faculty jeeeeesh.
franster Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 Hi all, First time poster joining the fray with you guys. My friend who applied last year told me about this forum and now that I'm almost done with applications I guess am ready to check it out. I've been an emotional nutcase just like everyone else. Glad to see I'm in good company here. @Vespertine. Congrats to the acceptance from Tyler! Which program? I had a skype interview for Tyler's Fiber and Material Studies program on Wednesday. I couldn't believe how fast that happened! I have a feeling that since I haven't heard back yet that I'm not receiving a first round offer. FMS only has two students/year. Super stressful. Anyone been offered a spot from Fiber? Working on my last application today to Cranbrook! Anyone else have that left to go? I haven't heard back from anywhere else yet. Also submitted to SAIC, VCU and Washington University in St. Louis (WashU). Good luck everyone! My mantra is MFA 2017! Hopefully that will get it done.
Vespertine Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 @franster Thank you! Photography I wouldn't read too much into not hearing back yet... could still be interviews to finish up etc. Fingers crossed for you though!

sylviecerise Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 @franster I'm sure they'll take a bit to decide—hoping you get a positive response soon! Tyler's FMS program seems really great; Jesse Harrod is awesome.
