  1. Congrats to everyone who got accepted yesterday! That must have been a nice surprise!
  2. I was significantly more attractive than my ex, enough so that others commented on it, but I loved him for his personality, not his looks. You have a terrible attitude, no wonder you have been so unsuccessful in finding a relationship.
  3. I've done some research on this because I will likely be educated in the States but I want to come back to Canada to work. This website has been an excellent resource: http://sac-oac.ca/membership-certification/information-internationally-educated-speech-language-pathologists-and. If you're interested in working in Canada, check it out!
  4. OK, that makes more sense. I agree that the person who does the asking should do the paying, at least for the first time.
  5. 25 and yes, I am 25. I turn 26 in a couple of months. I realized that I wasn't happy with my life whatsoever or even the person who I was. I broke up with my boyfriend of 6 years which to date has been the most painful thing I have ever gone through, and really made an effort to beef up my C.V. for graduate school. I moved out of home at 18 and have been supporting myself since but I think because I have a disability, I have been babied and not really encouraged to take responsibility for myself. This in turn promoted apathy and making excuses. I have been working at a dead end job after graduation, although I know there are other options if I worked hard to find them. If I don't get into school this year I will look for a new job and maybe even move to another city. I do hope I get into graduate school though, because I feel more ready than I ever have and it would really force me out of my comfort zone. I always lived with friends or with my boyfriend so I never really had that experience of being 100% responsible for myself. I hope if you get into school you will find this, too.
  6. ....um, what? Why do you expect him to pay for your date just because he's a man? You do realize that way of thinking is archaic and outdated, right?
  7. -56 with windchill. Brrrrr. I'm staying in and watching Netflix all day!

Brrr, at least it's warmer than that down here. The snow hasn't stopped in hours and I had plans to go to the store today.

I think that cold and snow are equal evils! Maybe just order take out? :)

  8. I read it and loved it! I also "liked" your Facebook page . Clearly Caley has proven all of those people wrong (and will continue to do so). My parents were told that I would never speak intelligibly, read past a grade 4 level, attend college, etc etc. And these were so-called "professionals" in the field. I think that the world is becoming more and more accepting and knowledgeable of disabilities. At least, I hope so. People like you and your sister are a big part of this . Ps @SweetPea21, I got an email a while ago from one of my programs saying "Congratulations!...." only to go on to state that my application materials had been received . If only we could block all irrelevant emails.
  9. Your sister is correct that there are similarities between the autism and Deaf community's fight for rights, mainly because both disorders affect communication. I can't believe someone actually said that to her! That is the very height of ignorance. I haven't personally been questioned on my ability to have children but I have certainly heard about it from friends in the Deaf community. What people don't realize is that there are a lot of technologies and people adapt. We've been adapting our entire lives so why would child rearing be any different? I just shake my head , haha. ETA: @arthritiskid, I tried to upvote you but alas, I've ran out of positive votes for the day. Grad cafe must think I'm excessively positive, lol.
  10. You're so right--even people with obvious disabilities experience this. I can't wait to read your blog post!
  11. Last day of February! Hopefully we all receive good news soon!

  12. @autismadvocate, I just wanted to chime in to say that even I have been on the receiving end of that dreaded "you're so cute!" I don't really understand it because I don't look physically different from anyone else in any way yet when some people find out I'm deaf, that is what they come up with, lol. People are weird. @ballerina18, I get you, this is maddening. However, I would not email anyone. If anything you can unofficially visit the campus without expecting to meet anyone and if you do, then great! This is an incredibly busy time of the year for faculty and especially the admissions committee; it will only annoy them if you push it. autismadvocate is right that there is nothing we can do at this point so just sit back and try to think about something else. Hugs!
  13. I stayed with a friend of mine with 3 cats and now I kind of want one...my dog is incredibly affectionate but these cats will literally snuggle up beside your head on the pillow. SO ADORABLE. I guess my dog does think cats are friends, so maybe that would work out well!
  14. @NCAR, sorry if this is random, but did I see you around the forum this time last year? If I'm correct and this is also your second year applying, GOOD LUCK!
  15. I was reading the Pacific thread in the SL-P forum because I'm bored at work and someone commented that they felt comfortable in a suit and not overdressed, so I would recommend wearing a suit!
  16. so I finally got an interview offer but I'm pretty sure it's because they are unsure about me, lol. Oh well, I'll take what I can get!

Congrats! I suggest before the call you do a test run with a friend so you know that you can be seen clearly and there aren't any weird lighting conditions.

  17. LOL. I feel y'all. I've become very adept at cleaning up my spam email and clicking "unsubscribe".
  18. That's too bad about the plane tickets . Where are you flying in from? It would have cost me nearly $1500 to come from Canada. I suppose that isn't a lot of money when you consider the big picture, though. Maybe it is the school for you! I hope you hear from UNL soon. Isn't it such a pain seeing others get acceptances when you haven't heard anything yet?
  19. It's the same as some programs but I applied to ones that were ~20K or less a year. I won't be eligible for in state tuition and I'm unlikely to get funding or scholarships, being an international student, so I had to be careful where I applied. I admit that the 3 year program sounds nice, though!
  20. I looked into Pacific but decided not to apply because its so expensive . I also thought that they would force me to fly down for an in-person interview but saw that some people in the SLP forum got Skype interviews! Good luck on your interview! Have you heard back from any schools yet?
  21. Hi DenverGirl! Welcome! Which programs did you apply to?
  22. Anyone else notice that no one on this thread has been admitted while obsessively refreshing their emails or doing "research" on grad cafe? It is my goal to become the first. lol.
  23. I think it depends on how many programs there are in your field. I was wait-listed last year in Canada and only 3 schools offer my program so I really had no chance. More options=more people more likely to decline their offers. You never know though, apparently the previous year they accepted everyone off of the list.
  24. I've become really good at cleaning up spam emails and clicking "unsubscribe", haha.
