  1. I just wanted to say that I believe it is much harder for international students to be accepted in the US. Unlike places like Australia (Europe?) where they charge exorbitant fees for international students, there is in state and out of state tuition and thus probably less incentive to accept international students over their own students. I was only accepted to one school out of 8 American schools that I applied to, and wait listed at 2 others. I didn't apply to extremely competitive schools, either. That is just my take on my own situation, as I was accepted to a top Canadian school. If you do decide to apply to any more schools, it might be helpful to contact each and see how many international students they accept. This is something I wish I had done. Good luck!
  2. YES, thank you for making this thread. In my case, I'm still waiting on the graduate school official letter so I am checking my email a million times a day. I've already put in my intent to attend and paid my deposit but a part of me thinks that the dean will say "Oh no, not this one. Nevermind", lol. Does this ever happen?!? That would be so cruel...I'm also checking my mail everyday hoping for that information package so I can start planning all the fun events I will go to and the books I will buy, etc. I feel like now that we have been waiting so long, we want things to start happening...NOW.
  3. I just do not understand why these people agree to write LORs if they can't provide a good reference...it just seems cruel and it's easy enough to say no, isn't it?
  4. Congratulations to everyone accepted at the U of A! I'm from Edmonton and it's an excellent program .
  5. No wonder obesity is so rampant in North America. Even "healthy" foods are apparently unhealthy. I like the suggestion that someone made of buying whole chickens. I also like frozen veggies and try to eat them often, mainly in chicken stir frys or even blended with fruit to make a smoothie. Another thing I like to do is make my own salad dressing because I would like to avoid those sold at the superstore. My favorite is equal amounts of balsamic vinegar and olive oil. I also spend a bit more on organic bread with whole grains. Looking forward to other suggestions!
  6. Ew, is anything sacred anymore (in terms of food)?
  7. Enhanced chicken? Do you mean like, the stuff from Costco? Please excuse my ignorance, haha.
  8. I apologize on behalf of all Canadians for Justin Bieber, Sum 41, and Nickleback. lol.
  9. YES! I was wait listed last year and got in this year. I published a paper, volunteered more, and took two additional courses. Good luck.
  10. Thanks for the suggestions! I think I will do that, haha. I just wish that there was more selection online!
  11. Waiting on official graduate school acceptance (have already received departmental acceptance)...wondering if I should let other schools know I won't be attending yet.

I got into a Canadian program which doesn't but it's much cheaper (5K a year). I haven't heard from the American schools. I think I would choose the Canadian program regardless. I guess I just have to cross my fingers and hope that my official offer comes through soon!

Ah, I see! Then give the other school your answer. :)

Hmmm...I might wait and see if I get anything by the 15th, then I'll let them know. Thanks! Who knew that there is yet more to stress about after actually being accepted?

  12. AHHH, I love that, deci:belle! Thanks for sharing!
  13. Double post.
  14. I love this one: ! For those who may not get it, deaf or hard of hearing people can "turn off" their hearing at will if they wear a CI or hearing aid (or permanently if they don't) .
  15. I was just trying to figure out if it's lame to spend $15 on shipping to order a hoodie from the school I will be attending! haha.
  16. Omg, yes. I would live in yoga pants and leggings if I could.
  17. Yay, I just found out that I'm going to be co-published in a special edition of Cochlear Implants International! :)

  18. Thank you! They seem like an incredible program. Good luck!!!
  19. @aykl, I have taken courses through Athabasca, and it was a positive experience! Not too expensive and the online delivery is good. Good luck . And yes, good luck to everyone waitlisted at UBC! There's still hope for you yet!
  20. That is good to know, thank you! In her follow up email, she said that she was pleased I was "accepting of [their] offer", but my letter said that we have to put it in writing, anyway. I agree that it's unfair that some ruin things for others, especially when some people may not check their email as often. I have to wonder what exactly happened? Perhaps she called someone and they claimed to be the accepted person and declined the offer. That would be unfortunate.
  21. Now that I think about it, maybe I was the last phone call before they decided to only email people? LOL.
  22. OMG! I just had to respond to this, haha. When I got my acceptance call from UBC, I let it ring because I'm hearing impaired and I don't trust myself on the phone AT ALL when I'm excited. I had my coworker help me call back about five minutes later and Sue was reluctant to talk to her because she said someone had pretended to be someone they were not this year. We ended up putting her on speaker phone and my coworker acted as a sort of translator while I verbally accepted . I can't believe someone would do that--it seems so weird and pointless? And yes, the hope is still alive! Good luck to everyone still waiting!
  23. YAY, argslp! Isn't it an amazing feeling to know you actually have a choice? Those acceptances will continue to come! Congratulations once again!
  24. Guys, I just wanted to say hang in there. I received nothing but rejections/assumed rejections and wait lists until I finally got two acceptances in one day. I don't expect to receive any more. My point is just because one school may reject you doesn't mean another won't accept you. I know it is SO HARD to see that at this point but you still have hope until you have heard from every school. We can never guess at the logistics of this weird game called graduate admissions. Anyways, I'm rooting for you all and GOOD LUCK!
