@foreignstudent, this article on firing one's advisor might be of use to you: https://chroniclevitae.com/news/1321-how-to-fire-your-adviser

You say you're not concerned about ranking when you talk about School A but it's one of the first things you included about School B... I'm guessing that you're more concerned with ranking than you're willing to let on. I mean, why are you so willing to believe that School B is going to top the "amazing fit" of School A? I would focus on the PI you would be working with, their placement track record, and the success of their current and previous students.

Could you take your prerequisites at another, cheaper school and then transfer them to BU SED?

What specifically do you want to study? What specific quantitative skills do you think you need to study that topic? If all you want is quantitative skills, take some undergraduate courses in math and statistics.

I'm confused about what you've been awarded. If you're getting tuition remission, a scholarship, and a TA position, then you wouldn't need to worry about the non-resident tuition, would you? Does the TAship have you working for free or is there a stipend with that which is separate from your scholarship? Or is the TAship and tuition remission for the second year only? Right now, this is unclear. At any rate, you can try saying that you're interested in School A but received a more competitive offer from School B. People around here seem to do it all the time. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

What will happen with your grades if you don't take a medical withdrawal this semester? What will happen with your help if you stay in school this semester? If I were you, I would worry less about what grad schools will think and more about what will happen with your health and your grades this semester if you do not take a medical withdrawal.

It depends on what kind of job in California you want. Are you looking to be at a major UC, a Cal State, a community college, or a nonacademic position? Without this information, it's hard to say.

Rescheduling Interview or Withdrawing Application?
rising_star replied to kingslayer's topic in Decisions, Decisions
In that case, either take fuzzy's advice or ask the program directly whether or not any funding is available for your prospective/intended degree program. If they say no, then you decline the interview. If they say "maybe", "possibly", "potentially", etc., then you do the interview. -
getting a poli sci job with a different degree
rising_star replied to changeisgood's topic in Political Science Forum
It's definitely something you should ask yourself! If you get hung up on the "prestige" of the discipline, you might not be making decisions that are the best for you. Another thought is that you may want to think about the types of institutions you might want to work at following a PhD, what departments they have, and what credentials they seek, keeping in mind that where you want to work is likely to change. (For example, I just knew as a MA student that I wanted to be in a PhD-granting department once I graduated. Now, not so much.) -
Rescheduling Interview or Withdrawing Application?
rising_star replied to kingslayer's topic in Decisions, Decisions
At least do the interview. It sounds like you'll have a bunch of regrets later (possibly years down the road) if you don't. Pretty much everyone knows that you can't do a PhD without funding so I wouldn't worry about that part yet. -
Letting know schools that I've accepted to waitlist school
rising_star replied to maktoob101's topic in Waiting it Out
I would not talk about the other offers at all. Update your file with your improved GPA and whatnot but don't send in the rest. -
I'm not gonna lie, you sound really immature here when you talk about qualitative research as though it's somehow "lesser than" other types of research or not the same as doing technical research. There is a LOT of technique which goes into doing good qualitative research. You still haven't answered my original question about what kind of career you see yourself having. That really is the key to figuring out what the appropriate next steps are.

In academia, people tend to care about where you earned your highest degree, so that would be helpful. I wouldn't necessarily do another bachelor's. What do you want to do for your career? Use that to decide which degree makes the most sense as the next step.

It's definitely going to be expensive degree without any funding. Are you sure you need the degree to pursue the career path you're interested in?

Transfer my M.Sc. to another university
rising_star replied to abcr_abdo's question in Questions and Answers
Usually, no. You might be able to transfer in 2-3 courses but you would still need to redo some of your coursework if you move to another university. -
Least amount of debt. I'd choose either School B or School C. School B could be a better offer if you're able to find a second job for an additional 5-10 hours/week AND/or if the funding is renewable for a second year. It also depends a bit on the cost of living in each area since it's hard to say whether the amounts they are offering are enough for you to survive on...

Potential advisor on leave first year?
rising_star replied to thinkingandthinking's topic in Coursework, Advising, and Exams
You know, I think people put too much emphasis on building a relationship with one's advisor through taking courses with them. The only reason I took courses with my advisor was because he was teaching the core departmental courses in my first year. But, he didn't pay any more attention to my work in those courses than he did to the other students. I actually think it was more useful to students wanting him on their committee than it was for students actually being advised by him, mostly because he had different expectations for his advisees. At any rate, my point is that the relationship I built with my advisor didn't really come from taking classes with him. It came from interacting with him in office hours, at individual meetings, at departmental events, etc. -
I like to start by figuring out the best way to convey why my project matters (so why the research Q is relevant and to whom) and then build from there to make sure the lit review shows the background for the project, that the methods and analysis explain how I'll answer the research Q, and that it makes sense to someone not in my nuanced subfield.

What to do with a bachelors in sociology?
rising_star replied to litany239's topic in Sociology Forum
Have you tried getting a research job at a university? I know Rice University has recently advertised for post-baccalaureate fellows to do research with various centers there. -
Few student health plans include dental. If there's a dental school in your area, you can often get low-cost cleanings and exams, which helps a lot with the cost of dental. That said, I paid out of pocket for cleanings and x-rays in grad school and it was typically about $120/visit.

I would think that neither program is the best choice given your career goals. If you want to be a data analysis, you'll want strong quantitative training, which seems like you should be doing a stats or data-heavy MA, rather than one in environmental management or environmental health. Is there a way that you could tailor the Yale MEM to get experience in the energy sector (geology and physics courses), in addition to taking quantitative courses?

"High on wait list" + "invited to open house" = ???
rising_star replied to ashes_are_burning's topic in Decisions, Decisions
If they said you're high on the wait list, why are you doubting them or assuming they said this to everyone? Without knowing which school we're talking about, it's hard to say how they treat wait listed students when it comes to the open house.
