  1. Don't worry! It's still early. I am surprised that they're coming in already!
  2. Congrats! Also, we have the very first UNC-Chapel Hill acceptance AND another Chicago interview!
  3. There’s a second interview for Chicago. Anyone claiming it?
  4. I know! Based on research/reputation alone, they're great schools! But I also consider campus climate and location since we'll be spending years there at a time.
  5. Getting Starbucks Gold Status is easier than getting into a PhD program. #TRUTH

  6. From what a friend told me, it's really "Eurocentric" (it's closest word I can think off). Students of color apparently don't get a lot of help from faculty... even those who are working in area studies departments (i.e. southeast asia, etc.) Of course, this is coming from his personal experience and he's also an international student. So, I'm not sure if its a fair assessment of the school. However, I don't want to risk it because I'm a minority already coming from a U.S. territory (who happens to live in the Midwest for school & work). I heard great things about UMich, but I didn't want to think about other things when going to school. Of course, I understand there is personal bias coming from my friend.
  7. UGHHH! I hate math, but love statistics! I found that multiple choice math is the absolute worst! I'm more into applying what those things are into real life issues! LOL.
  8. Nice! I was planning to apply to UMich, but I heard bad things about the school in general. It made me re-think of my application. I found that applying to programs that were focused in medical sociology and had a public health program made me swoon! Particularly, one program I applied to had an option to get MPH along the way as well!
  9. YASSSSSS! Welcome to the party, @Len The feelings you wrote about are normal. You're hearing this from a guy who has done this five times already! If it makes it any better, usually all application portals have that check for missing/incomplete option before submitting those life changing things! lol As for age, it doesn't matter! We'll be competing with "youngins" who are just about to finish their undergraduate degree and others who have an extensive CV of working, publications, etc. If you also think about it, there are others are coming from other academic disciplines other than Sociology. Like many have expressed on here, we can only hope for the best. I'm pretty sure we all have our personal strengths and weaknesses. Sometimes, it comes down to pure luck AND fate. I personally opted to take a break after my getting my MA this past May because it's how my brain/energy for school works. I realized that I can't do a straight-up PhD program or else I would burn out and drop out. If I ended up going to a PhD program last Fall, I don't know how motivated I would be at the moment. Of course, I have a lot of stake for this year. My GRE scores are horrible and expiring. Sadly, I don't want to retake them because I'm not such a great test taker. Let me know if you want to talk! Congratulations on taking the first step!
  10. Thanks, @qeta Unfortunately, I work a full-time job that comes with research experience, but not health benefits. I was working in social media that had benefits, but couldn't pass up the opportunity to work in health research and get more experience for grad school! I do question why I left that job that provided a benefits package! Alas, I'm more concerned with getting into school again for the last time. Really crossing my fingers that things work out! How are you keeping up with waiting?
  11. Make that four of us! Sociology of Health FTW!
  12. Hey! It went well. I finished it last November. I would love to work with Jeremy Freese and work for the Center for Population Health Sciences! I wish they were more straightforward with what the departments strengths are. Some current graduate students were working in health research so I'm crossing my fingers!
  13. Hey @infovore Hopefully you get your application done for UCSD. I can attest that the UC's have the most stringent application process. And, welcome to the forum!
  14. Evening everyone! I'm a potential applicant for PhD programs next year if things don't work out this year. I'm also planning to pursue a dual-title phd in communication at one of the schools I applied to this year. Any places I can use to look for phd programs that specialize in health comm/intercultural comm/social networks? Thank you in advance!
  15. By the way guys, we're much more active than last year's group! At some point, their convos died out, but I'm pretty sure we're such a lively bunch!
  16. That's awesome! Hey @capslock ! Welcome! How was your journey in submitting all those dreaded apps?!?!? Hey @Madelene ! How did your Stanford application go? I applied, but the lack of information or even a page dedicated to research specialties made writing the SOP hard!
  17. I'm in the same boat. To be quite honest, even if I have an MA, I still feel doubt. I was super cocky the first time I applied for 2014 application cycle. After lowering my expectations and "discovering" my true research interests after, I found the courage to apply for 2015 and got in. I thought that finishing my MA and going to a PhD program was going to happen, but I realized that this might be the last time I can take a break between degrees..especially the fact that I want to start my career after getting the PhD. What brings all these doubts (in my case) is not believing in myself and the work I've done. Partially, there's also my untreated anxiety & depression since losing insurance after graduation. So it's a double whammy. I came in this application season trying to be confident. I ended up deleting all my application things (i.e. SOPs, drafts, etc.) in December 2016 thinking I wasn't going to go for my PhD anymore; then used July through September to research what programs I was going to apply to, rewrite SOPs, and contact my professors who I told months earlier that I was going to do a Pre-Med Post-Bacc after graduation. I'm also freaking out because my GRE scores are expiring...(Sorry for the long rant). But at the end of the day, I know I have the initiative, work ethic, and research agenda to do something for my adoptive home. But it gets tiring being told that I was good enough, but not good enough to get an admission offer. T_T I hate how this year it seems that a lot of the interview invites or potential talks. I feel like they switch up the way they do things yearly. But I'm just really anxious about this whole "WAITING TO HEAR IF WE'RE GOOD ENOUGH" period.
  18. We'll be fine! It looks like we have a great community on this application season. I feel the same too. I don't know how motivated I'll be if I don't get in. I just don't want to retake the GREs again! I do admit that January to March is the worse for the acceptance/rejection letters to come out.
  19. Damn! That's a good catch! But still nerve wracking nonetheless! How are you holding up?
  20. That's good! I dreaded applying while I was still in my MA program. I was already distracted while writing it and had extra time in my last year because I was analyzing data already by the fall of my last year. I told myself don't apply or else you'll fall behind with the thesis! But good luck though! Finishing up school while applying to more school is hard!
  21. I feel you! this was the feeling for me three years ago! I was living on Guam and wouldn't get notfications until midnight. being ahead of the US for 15-16 hours, it sucked big time! I even had an interview at midnight for the MA program I ended up attending!
  22. This helped me in my GIS course. Having Arc10.3.4 and another application window opened helped workflow. Bummer that the resolution made it hard to work when I wasn't working on GIS software. I recommend Papers. But check with your school if they have a preferred citation manager that you can get for free.
  23. Hey everyone! Anyone claiming the UT-Austin Interview invite that was posted today?
