  1. I think we're all on the same boat! I'm at work right now. checking this. HAHAHAHA. I've been refreshing my phone for my personal e-mail. Hence, nothing yet. I get so OCD that I start so many projects to distract myself only to find me checking e-mails and application portals again and again.
  2. Well, I've been watching Netflix once I get home from work! And your mom is so wise! My mom told me something similar in previous years. But I think the pressure of feeling of not "being good enough" is weighing me down and I'm slowly working on it! Thank you for those kind words!
  3. I feel ya! I have melatonin at home, but it stopped working because I had a period where my anxiety/depression kept me so much I kept taking it! Lol. And i'm so close to throwing my phone way because I keep checking/refreshing it as if it'll magically appear out of nowhere!
  4. Thank you for clariying, @smallaxe! I understand what you're saying now. I was thinking about it that way, but I'm so engrossed with work that I felt lost at that moment... Well, even up to now. Hi, @fuzzylogician! That was my plan. I'm just having a hard time figuring out what I need to include and exclude from this. I haven't had help from my adviser before graduation and just kept pushing me to publish without thinking about the differences both. Thank you, @DataCrusader! I'll keep this in mind as I work on it!
  5. That sounds amazing! I think at the end of the day, you made the right decision to apply to schools that you felt were the perfect "fit" for your interests. Doing the tango with graduate school applications can get very tricky! Being practical, you can only do so much (i.e. apply to a number of schools without spending $$$, doing your research, etc.). At the same time, you want to make sure to cover all your bases (i.e. apply to more than 5 or 6 or whatever you feel comfortable with). There's hope! So don't worry about it. Speaking from experience, it took me until my second application season to get into a program with funding (an MA program). I learned that I do better with breaks in between school so that I'm always recharged and fresh when taking on a big chunk of schooling. I thought I regretted not applying for this Fall, but I realized I needed a mental break from school because getting a PhD is a commitment like marriage. Not trying to comment on the way things are these days, but often we rush into things that we think we want. Of course, there are some that do better with going through school in one go, but I'm not sure what your story is. However, sometimes, rejection is often a blessing in disguise. I remember applying to 2 of the schools you applied to this year and they were my first grad school rejections. It broke me. But, it turned out to be the best thing that's happened to me. Not to preach, but if your gut tells you your going to make it, trust it. I do worry about the numbers game though! My GRE is horrible and expiring next year! But this is why I pray that ad comms really follow through their word of "holistically evaluating" our apps. Because I suck at tests, but I know damn well I can do the work! Sorry for the long reply. Hope this helps in a little way!
  6. That's good to hear! It seems this application season the way programs are contacting us is much slower! Usually, HSS @ UPenn sends out their invites then PSU professors start contacting students they want to interview! I'm SERIOUSLY getting anxiety attacks at night that I can't sleep!
  7. Hey! I didn't get one, but I saw the results section. AS for interviews, I suggest brushing up on getting familiar with the department before it! Let me know if you need more help. Don't worry! It's still a bit early, but don't lose hope!
  8. Hey everyone! Just wanted to start this nerve-wracking thread! The first interview for the HSS @ U Penn came in today! Post results here, should you feel inclined, and this can be general discussion on Acceptances/Rejections/interviews as well. Good luck to everyone & may the odds be always in our favor!
  9. At some point (that I was considering med school), I was like, "She's the epitome of balancing life AND school." I barely kept myself together during my MA!
  10. In terms of reapplying, I don't think you'll have an advantage for the upcoming application cycle. Yes, they'll ask you if applied before, but the big question is, "What have you changed since then? And why are all of a sudden switching?" It may or may not hurt your chances, but I'm not really sure. As for your current program, have you tried being more proactive in making things work? I've never heard of case where first year PhD students transfer to another school due the environment changing at their current institution. Admissions are often based on your "fit" to the department. Could your offer more insight as to why this is the case?
  11. Ah thanks for the clarification. If you're planning to work in academia, doing these things for free, but getting to put this on your CV is pretty much the standard form of payment. I only asked those questions to get a feel of where you are coming from. You can always do a set fee (i.e. $200 per talk or price basing it on venue size). Again, I'm coming from an academic background where getting invitations to talk and having it on one's CV outweighs financial compensation. Also, from an altruistic POV, these talks (if you're doing them on your free time) should be considered as free since you're doing this on the merit of having time to inspire others. Just my two cents.

    Blogging!

I'm interested! Would love to write about the waiting part, rejections, and acceptances!
  13. I agree with @kitcassidance. As long as you have a very good relationship with your recommends, you shouldn't hesitate to remind them.. gently. Also, you have to remember that they usually need a small reminder because they do get busy. Of course, it's a different story if the recommender is someone you just met or barely know. Always have a backup just in case!
  14. Oh man! this is the hard truth about academia! I barely made it through my MA (well I made it out alive), but always the balancing is the hard part!
  15. Love Jamie's (STRIVETOFIT) blogs about medical school!
  16. I think "how much" really depends. Have you tried researching pay for motivational speakers/life coaches? Usually, having an agent makes it easy to figure this logistical part of giving talks. Also, what's your field? Academia? I don't think people in academia usually charge for talks, but are offered travel reimbursement from the inviting institution. Does this make sense? Or am i totally out of place?
  17. Hi everyone! I recently contacted a journal for information (because their writing guide was broken) and got this as part of the reply: In general, when preparing your post-thesis manuscript, I would encourage you to work to locate the piece outside of the genre of thesis writing, to forge critical bridges on the basis of what I imagine might be your nuanced, detailed, timely Guam based case study, to the regional domain of comparable concern, and to locate one of more critical hinges between whatever your disciplinary background might be and the trans- multi- or inter-disciplinary space of Pacific Studies. Can anyone help me interpret what they're saying? I'm so stressed from all the applications that my brain cells are having a hard time figuring this out. Thank you
  18. Applying to PhD programs in Sociology. how about everyone else?
  19. I personally think you should pursue Public Health. From the sound of it, your interests is in disease epidemiology and you might benefit from an MPH because your learn Biostats, Epi, Health Behavior, etc. Have you thought about getting an MPH and a PhD?
  20. (INFORMAL) Penn Update: The graduate coordinator is currently in the process of reviewing all applications (whatever that means!). It's a very informal update since my application portal is saying it's still incomplete even though my GRE scores have been sent a month ago... and my very long first name didn't fit so my GRE registration name doesn't match my application name. FML. HAHAHAHA. Also, what are your thoughts on sending out recommendation requests even after you told the people writing them that the LOR requests two weeks ago were the last ones? I'm just a nervous since I decided to apply to two more programs that should be a shoe in despite my horrendous GRE scores. <3 XO
  21. Other programs (i.e. Clinical Psych, Biology, etc...) started interviews already. Some of them are being contacted about it.
  22. Biting nails here. Hot mess. Can't sleep. Social anxiety at a high. HAHAHAHA.
  23. By the way, anyone knows how interviews work? Or what's the next step after submitting applications? Of course, there's the freaking out part, but what's usually the timeline for these things? My MA program (as I found out) doesn't meet until later in the spring (maybe March-ish) because they have rolling admissions, offers two grad assistantships, and can be done part-time. Just super curious!
  24. Thanks for the cheer me up! It shouldn't take me long though! Once I start working on these things, I'll be focused to finish them. Although, I won't submit it until my checking deposit comes through next week! So, there's that! HAHAHAHAHAHA.
