  1. Can anyone clarify or explain to me how NSF fellowships work in conjuction with receiving department funding? I've been interested in applying for a NSF fellowship but I'm not sure when I should be doing so. This would really help me a alot and hopefully others!
  2. Do schools/departments look at the GRE scores religiously? I recently got an M.A with extensive experience and having low GRE scores that are expiring is making me super nervous!
  3. To be quite honest, I've been super unproductive at work! But playing with my corgi kills time... With anxiety still lurking in the background! Been getting nightmares about the application process once again!
  4. The Pennsylvania State University, University of Pennsylvania University of Minnesota - Twin Cities The University of Alabama at Birmingham Stanford University Vanderbilt University Duke University All submitted. Some schools are processing materials.
  5. I believe we have similar interests! I ended up with a 3.60. But, in fairness, it was heavy on quantitative courses for the two years. At this moment, my job is related to sociology. Working in health research at the moment. How's your MA program going?
  6. OMG! Good luck! I was supposed to apply during my last year of my MA, but decided not too. Now, I'm nervous because I currently work full time and been so lax about school! What are your research interests?
  7. Anyone want to exchange CV's for critique/comments to make them better? Academic CV's are the most confusing! Message me or comment on here!
  8. hey everyone! was curious if anyone's in the same boat as me? I know my GRE scores are horrendous, but they're also expiring. I also have horrible test taking anxiety.. I cried during my fist exam in my MA program... Sad... I know... A grown man crying for anxiety and stress. LOL. here are my stats - Mid 20's - B.A. in Sociology & Anthropology (minor in English // TA for 1 semester // RA for 1 year) - M.A. in Sociology (graduate minor in Research Methodology // TA for 2 years // RA for 1 semester) - 1 year and 4 months RA work for a NCI Cancer Research Center Partnership at my undergraduate institution - 3.8 GPA (undergrad Overall) // 3.6 GPA (MA Overall) - 3 years of AmeriCorps and 1 year with CACGP - GRE 146V, 144Q, 3.5AW ---> VERY LOW...I KNOW : ( Not a very good test taker... I don't think I can stress this enough) - Research interests: Medical Sociology; Race/Ethnicity; Demography; Public Health - Currently working in health research for the VAMC I know I can be very critical about myself, but I took it lightly when I first applied in the Fall 2014 cycle when I got rejected from ALL 8 programs I applied to. HELP!
  9. Hey @lorenzen ! My stats when I applied to M.A. programs (after getting rejected from all PhD programs I applied to the previous year): - Mid 20's - B.A. in Sociology & Anthropology (minor in English, graduated magna cum laude, dean's list, president's list) - 3.8 GPA (Overall) - 3 years of AmeriCorps and 1 year with CACGP - Minimal research experience (at that time, I only had about 8 months of it) - GRE 146V, 144Q, 3.5AW - Born/raised in the Philippines; Lived on Guam - Research interests: Medical Sociology; Race/Ethnicity I applied to 5 and got into 4 programs. One school stressed GRE so much, it was the reason I didn't get in. Out of the 4 that accepted me, 3 gave me some form of Graduate Assistantship. The 1 school that I hoped to attend? Lost all materials I submitted. I say your chances are pretty good. But a caveat is either location or how well you're going to adapt to the program that does give the assistantship. I ended up in the Midwest because I this school I got my MA from was a research-tier level school, but not in Sociology (they're more in Public Health, Social Work, etc.) Hope this information helps!
  10. Morning everyone! I was wondering if anyone knows schools that have MPH/PhD combined programs? I'm planning to apply, but I come from a social science background. Looking forward to responses!
  11. Hey everyone! I was wondering if people had experiences with getting into a PhD program with a master's degree in Sociology? I'm just a bit puzzled that only a few classes will be taken into consideration for the PhD. program. Were you guys set back? Or ahead? Did you have to redo some classes when starting the PhD program? Also, did you end up doing/getting another MA/MS along the way? What are your experiences? Looking forward to your stories!
  12. First of all, love the Espeon DP. But going back to your question, I recommend any of Erving Goffman's work. I was pursuing social psychology in sociology when I was an undergraduate. His work? Phenomenal!
  13. Don't worry about your GRE scores! Mine are horrible at 146V/144Q. Took it last minute 4 years ago for my first round of applications. Freaking out because they expire next year and I'm not a great test taker!
  14. Thank you for this! I've been working on my Duke application for awhile and I'm getting worried that my GRE scores are low. Should I still consider submitting an application? Thank you!
  15. Good luck! I applied to UPenn as well! Great stats by the way!
  16. @abenz thank you! I think the number of schools you apply to is totally up to you! I personally think there's no magic number of schools. it all comes down to: 1) how good of a fit is the program to your research interests; 2) which programs/school has the best resources to help you in finishing the program; And 3) how much money are you willing to spend for applications? I understand the whole concept of safety schools, but from experience, the safety school I always thought of as a "safety" school turned out to be a program I wouldn't try applying to again. This particular school/program lost all my materials (i.e. transcripts, GRE scores, etc.) and had to call them personally to sort things out. The last time I applied to that school, they accepted me last minute because I did all that running around and expected me to make a decision right there and then with no assistanship offers. I was bummed out when I turned them down because the program I ended up going to took the time to do a formal interview and gave me an assistanship around the same time. Sorry for digressing, but it's really up to you in regards as to how many schools you end up applying to! Remember that you have to put in a lot of time and effort into crafting the materials for the schools and not every school asks for the same thing! I hope this information helps!
  17. So, I feel like I haven't been here forever! But I just finished submitting my applications for this cycle. A bit about myself: Undergrad GPA was 3.82 (4.00 Sociology; 3.92 Anthropology; 4.0 English Minor) Graduate GPA was 3.60 (with a minor in Research Methodology). I think I have good amount of research & teaching experience. Currently working as a research assistant. But my GRE scores are horrible! 146V. 144Q, 3.5W I only applied to the following: Pennsylvania State University, University of Pennsylvania, University of Minnesota, University of Alabama at Birmingham, and Stanford University. I'm so scared because my scores are really bad and they're expiring next year. I'm also not a very good test taker. I come from a U.S. Territory (I grew up there and went to undergrad), but moved to Missouri for graduate school. I applied for 2014 (got rejected to all 8 programs) & in 2015 I applied to 5 MA programs and got into 3. I feel like I put all my eggs into this basket. I'm really freaking out to the point where I cried after I submitted my last application the other day
  18. Hey! Im actually a second year student at SLU. I'm finishing my MA next spring. Although they don't have a PhD program, I think SLU is a good stepping stone to see where to go after. It's not a typical step, but may be beneficial for the long run.
  19. Hey ChiuanJing! I'm a master's student at SLU. You should check Prof. Scott Harris regarding the sociology of emotions.
  20. From personal experience, it depends. Some undergraduates have the resume (a.k.a. summer research opportunities + a very competitive CV) and they get accepted to the programs they want. At the same time, there are people (like myself) who did pretty well as undergrad, but didn't get into PhD programs right away. IT gave me the chance to narrow my research interests and explore what field you want to end up in. In Sociology's (my personal opinion by the way) case, admissions committees want to see that you already have a clear sense of what your research interests are. In your case, your interests lie in crime and punishment. I think admissions committees are going to pick apart your personal statement and SOP as to what aspect of crime and punishment? Are you planning to examine the changing scope of incarceration in the advent of social justice? Are you interested in the degree of relationship between committed crimes and punishments received? Or are you looking at how social movements in the U.S. are changing the landscape how crime is defined and how punishments are given? With work experience, you'll be able to asks those kinds of questions and eventually develop you personal research agenda. Working after getting you bachelor's degree isn't as bad as everyone thinks it is. Like my advisor told me, not every individual is the same. Sometimes you have to go with the flow and realized that what you want is still the same thing, but you're getting there from a different route than everyone else. Hope this helps and I'm sorry if it's drawing from experience... Sorry
  21. I want to thank you for doing this! I do have a couple of concerns: 1. Will a low GRE score affect admissions? I've accumulated ~4 years of research as an undergraduate, post-bacc, and currently as an MA student. I've also done work as TA ~ 2 years. 2. Does addressing low GRE scores in the personal statement do anything at all? 3. Lastly, does taking more quantitative classes and using statistics in my thesis in my current master's program demonstrate statistical competence? I really appreciate you for taking the time to do this and thank you so much for helping all of us out!
  22. I'm throwing in the towel. 0 out 7 programs this year. I really got to re-think what I'll be doing with my life. Anyway what hurts the most is the straight rejections. Not even a single waitlist. Always the same reason: qualified, but not enough space. Maybe I won't make it in academia after all.
