I dunno, I didn't read "long term poverty will be worth it if I can follow my dream" so much as "I'm gonna be in long term poverty ANYWAY, so I may as well follow my dream". Well that or "I don't care so much that I'm making slightly less than my non-grad counterparts since I'm following my dream".

Psshh, countably infinite wishes. Also, wishing to eliminate the restrictions. Then wishing to be invited to study wherever the heck I want, at no charge, and then for some sort of financial support (lottery). I'm the type of guy that tries to break this game at every turn.

STEM guy here. I've been told that going to grad school would result in me making less money in the long run, but I personally do not care. I figure I get to be paid to do what I love for half a decade, and that's totally worth it. Plus, I feel like my options expand when I get out of grad school.

I would, but Harry Potter gets more acceptance letters than anyone, and he didn't even apply.

I was surprised that I got into...anywhere.  

Background story:

I only have a 3.2, and a guidance counselor told me not to bother applying anywhere.  She said I wouldn't get in anywhere decent.  I went ahead and applied anyway.  And I guess all the undergraduate research paid off.  I think my grades were offset by the fact I was in ROTC for the first half of college... it was tricky to juggle a math-heavy major while in the program (I'm not a math whiz).
 
And here I am, 12 months after she told me not to bother applying, getting ready to go to Hopkins, the top school in my field so glad I didn't listen!

I'm thinking about doing the same thing this year. I think it's definitely a must to do your research ahead of time.
