  1. I wouldn't apply to move than five schools. The applications are similar enough that writing several essays might not be as stressful as it seems. But I personally don't have the patience for a large number of applications. I'd do 2 "reach" schools, 2 "shoo-ins", 1 "safety". I put those in quotes because admissions can be unpredictable and it all depends on the strength of your application. Unless you write an absolutely terrible personal statement, you are bound to get into at least one program, if not all of them.
  2. Look into social work & social welfare programs that are fully funded. From what I hear, you should not spend money on a PhD, though some people might take out loans to supplement living but not to cover tuition.
  3. I'd decide by experts in my field first. If you are more concerned with location, make a list of universities you are interested in (for whatever reason) and take a look at the faculty in the social work program and see whose research aligns with your interests.
  4. Your GRE scores are great for programs that require them for students with under 3.0 gpa. As long as you have work/volunteer experience, you should be fine with getting into a solid MSW program. However, I don't know much about Boston College. In general, MSW program admissions are more holistic and not entirely driven by numbers.
  5. Have you looked into University of Indiana - Bloomington? They offer a dual degree in Public Affairs and Arts Administration https://spea.indiana.edu/masters/degrees-certificates/mpa-maaa-dual-degree/index.html
  6. I considered the MSW/MPP (or MPA) route but decided on the MSW for its versatility. I don't want to provide direct services but want to strengthened clinical skills as I focus on administrative social work, policy analysis and evaluation. I looked at listings for jobs I'd want in the future and they all list MSW as acceptable degrees for prospective employees. I second applying to both MPA and MSW programs after narrowing down your ideal career options and determining which programs would support your goals.
  7. Yes, I know; I meant you can do the certificate in addition to your doctoral studies.
  8. I am not on campus yet so I can't give you insider feedback. However, I also apply to apply for a Joint PhD in social work and sociology. I can see why a Social Work PhD intrigues you. It seems that ultimately you should decide the type of research you are interested in. If social welfare research methods fit your needs and interests over sociology, gender studies, or other disciplines, go for it. The joint PhD with sociology or psychology seems like a good option based on your interests. You can also do a graduate certificate in gender studies at University of Michigan.
  9. Congratulations!
  10. You can check out a sample plan of coursework on Michigan's website. Search "Course planning worksheets" on ssw.umich.edu.
  11. Macro social work including policy analysis and evaluation. My specialization is sexual violence, specifically rape crisis centers and education awareness programs. The job market varies on your area and your financial needs. There are plenty of social work jobs available but not all will pay you what you deserve based on your experience and advanced degree (and to be honest, anyone in social work deserves more money than they're offered).
  12. Thanks! My degree is interdisciplinary in humanities, history, and social sciences. It's not explicitly social work related but included relevant courses. I'm not sure because I didn't take psych courses in college. But if you think the the harder courses would be useful to you, take them. If not, the other courses will likely look good as well.
  13. You have a great GPA. It's mostly coursework in social sciences that count the most. The minimum GPA for most programs is 3.0. My cumulative GPA was 3.09 (major GPA 3.3) and I got into Michigan with over 50% funding. Your coursework and personal statement matter more than your grades.
  14. I'd start a blog of your own if you do not already have writing samples. That is the quickest way to build a small portfolio before reaching out to editors. You can find submission guidelines on most websites, so I suggest checking there.
  15. University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) offers both violence and gender & women's studies certificates. University of Michigan has great placement opportunities around sexual violence along with faculty with plenty of knowledge of the topic and field.
  16. It depends on the organization. There might be grants available within your school - ask around.
  17. I am fairly sure a lot of the applications don't actually open until September, though the personal statement topics might be available well before then (you can find them on the program's site). Two to four weeks before the priority deadline (varies for each program) seems reasonable. It makes sense for your issues essay to be somewhat relevant to your career interests. I plan to do work around sexual violence and wrote my essay on a topic relevant to the field. You don't have to be an expert but you should have an idea of what interests you.
  18. I just deferred for one year due to personal and financial issues. Hopefully that means a spot has opened up for Fall 2017!
  19. Looks like you can become a lecturer with a MSW and two years of post-MSW experience. A PhD is required for professorship.
  20. I worked in a homeless shelter with MSW students and they said the schedule was great for them. We had 4, 8, and 12-hour shifts overnight, so it was easy to get 15-25 hours a week. Work started at 7pm, ended at 7am - they could work any hours within those times. You can work for a crisis hotline; those hours are usually flexible. Since you have experience, you shouldn't have a problem getting a similar position! I am looking into childcare for the early start. Some preschools and daycare centers need morning 'floaters' starting around 6am, the shifts usually end by 9 after the final load of children.
  21. I plan to apply for graduate student housing on campus. The SSW's page also includes student listings for roommates, so I'll reach out to anyone who seems interesting.
  22. If I end up at Michigan, I would likely try to get an on-campus job and another part-time gig for the weekends. It'd definitely be a struggle. If I go to Loyola, I'd go down to 30 hours as well, which sounds stressful. It's a hard decision!
  23. Congrats to you as well! I didn't apply for CBI; I received a Dean's Mission Scholarship and Michigan Opportunity Grant.
  24. Quoting myself to say remain hopeful. I ended up with 60% covered with scholarships and grants.
  25. Unfortunately, I don't. I hadn't looked into yet because I wasn't feeling hopeful. I would send it to SSW if you don't receive any scholarship or grants from them, but Fin Aid department might also look into university-wide funding. Thank you!
