2017 Applications Thread

@heyDW sending all the good vibes I have!!!!!! I have a feeling it's just a matter of different tracks being announced at different times @phdthoughts I don't think 4 is a small number, I asked whether 7 was small some time ago on this thread and someone answered that they had applied to a lot less and most people they knew had applied to 5 ish. I think as long as you selected schools with good fit and you had positive communication beforehand, you'll be fine. I've heard good things about Iowa from a current student and U Mass seems really promising (though they said they only have a handful of spots this year) so we still have plenty to look forward to! As @ejpril88 said, Feb is ours!!- 733 replies

@heyDW I may have asked this before but are you and your husband applying for the same subfield? Even though I haven't applied to MN, I find myself analyzing the decision notification process :/- 733 replies

Luckily I've spent half my life in the U.S. and have met awesome people along the way so I have faith that whatever is going on now will be met with wisdom and solidarity! I'll be a little more nervous when I get to immigration and customs but I know I have great friends awaiting me and look forward to the new people I'll be meeting! Hope you also find great people at your new program!

I'm finding that the past years' notification dates are not so reliable! For example, based on past data, Wisconsin-Madison should be making notifications on Feb 2ish. But I have an interview on the 1st. I think it really depends on the number of applicants that year so never give up hope!- 733 replies

There were two people here that got notification from Purdue @d.grace I think it was. If @ejpril88 is also in the same track, perhaps it's a track by track thing?- 733 replies

So I have a friend whose parents are both professors. One got their phd in the Midwest and another from the west coast. They both got tenure track positions, but in two separate cities like 5 hrs apart by car. Their entire marriage has been long distance... It's working for them but hopefully none of the married people here will need to go through that (unless you want it that way)- 733 replies

Warm and fuzzy here too! Thanks @SarahBethSortino! Even if one's country hasn't been targeted yet, there's so much uncertainty on how things will change. Nice to know that we will be welcome by at least some people!

@av2010 Have fun, I hope it's a fruitful trip! I don't know anything about the program at West Virginia (I don't know much about anything) but there's a thread that @kirbs005 started for school visits and @heyDW listed some useful things to keep an eye out for. In terms of things to ask, I think I'd spend some time with current students asking how easy/difficult it is to balance TA/RA duties with coursework and realistically how long it takes for everyone to finish, and do people run out of funding before they are actually able to finish.. At my most recent program, it was pretty common knowledge among students that the MA takes at least 5 semesters, even though it was designed to be completed in 4. Professors, unless they are expressly in charge of student stats, didn't seem really aware of these overall trends. I finished in 4 semesters but some professors would ask me "what are you still doing here" while others would ask me "you're graduating already?!" so I think this kind of thing is better directed towards students. Also, how difficult/easy it is to find a job and what sort of support they received from the faculty in their job hunt. I think most professors will say good things about this because they only see the end result but they may not be aware of how hard the struggle was during the process. @hnm1231 Congratulations!! I'm not sure if that was your dream school or not, but it's such a prestigious program, I hope you're enjoying the victory! January is almost over guys, just a little bit longer to go. I have a feeling Feb will be more anxiety-ridden as we see more results popping up...- 733 replies

I agree with what everyone has said. Grad school is hard because it really is a new life (for a lot of people) a new home, a new job, a new future, a new everything. And whether you happen to be straight out of undergrad or are in your 30's or 40's, you're an adult - and for most adults, being exposed to something new and having to adjust, adapt, and make new friends isn't something they've had to do in a while. So it's perfectly natural that you're emotional and scared about the process. I think it's actually good that you are experiencing it now. You have plenty of time to come to terms with it, prepare mentally and emotionally for the move and change and vent with all of us in the same boat. It's better than being in blissful euphoria that you've been accepted then completely having a meltdown the first week of school. Let yourself enjoy the success, let yourself be anxious about the move and try and find ways to maybe slowly get used to it before it happens. If you are a church-goer, you'll probably be able to find a new church and some religious student groups at your new school that you could reach out to in advance and maybe build some friendships before you go. Schedule plenty of time with your friends and family. You have months before you have to actually move so take it slow and if you feel like you're not dealing with it well, cut yourself some slack, it's really a lot to take in. It'll be worth it once you're on the road to fulfilling your dreams though!

Ugh..... I know what you mean... That's how I felt after the POI who interviewed me stopped replying to my email. We had a good conversation flowing before so I felt like I absolutely disappointed her during the interview. But as someone mentioned, there are many factors that may have gone into the decision and your POI may be just as disappointed as you are to not be able to extend an offer.

One year a long time ago, there were penguins who didn't wear hats when swimming. This made their mothers livid. "Unacceptable!" Frightened, they screamed, "Bears!" Nobody seemed convinced so instead of going swimming they tried juggling. Their mothers tried everything they thought would teach her a skill. However, she couldn't even make oatmeal without disastrous results. So, the penguins gathered money (obviously) trying to purchase a bear. Towering over them, a grizzly beast danced, devouring all bears with such ferocity that even God enjoyed it. Afterwards, God congratulated the penguins and applauded them. "You did it!" Suddenly, the grizzly beast started dancing vigorously. There was an acromantula nearby. It challenged the preconception that magical mushrooms were magical. Sparkling, the magical mushrooms were spreading throughout town. Nobody with pyromania thought grilled cheese would spontaneously erupt into nine identical squirrels! Nevertheless, the penguins elucidated the benefits of sparkling

You're right, from what I've gathered, it seems each of the 4 tracks does their own thing, conducts interviews etc. then the ad com for the entire department comes together to make the final decision. Judging from the results last year as well, it seems Madison makes notifications all at once. So if one track is taking longer than usual, then the entire department's notification will most likely be delayed. Also, seems like they had more applicants than usual as well so.... We'll probably all be kept waiting til mid Feb....- 733 replies

I think this, in many regards, would apply to faculty, too! Though it does seem like a lot to keep in mind while one is also trying to not come off as a socially awkward weirdo Gah! Hopefully we'll all have a couple of offers and have reason to use this good advice. Also, I have an interview scheduled with Wisconsin-Madison on the 1st, so that might mean it's going to be a while til we all hear back on the final decision. The professor I spoke with last time did say they were aiming for mid Feb, but still, the results page from last year said early Feb, so I was kind of hoping for sooner..- 733 replies
