If you're preparing to work while doing the program (like I will) I would first say anticipate it to be extremely challenging since it's seems to be generally frowned upon for most SLP programs. So if you're willing to risk your grades suffering to some degree then welcome to the struggle club lol Have you looked into any work study or assistantships? I would say that a job with flexible hours will be ideal. So maybe a sales position? I think when I used to work in sales I could make my work schedule adapt to my school schedule for the most part. I work in a special needs school right now as a Teacher's Aide - maybe that's something you could do also? Sometimes there are floater type Teacher's aides that have slightly shorter work days. So maybe that could work as well. I'm not sure what areas you're interested in going to though and idk what's available in those areas either.

No it used to be. They updated a lot of the info they've had in October 2016. For most of the schools I've searched, it says the "Date Modified" at the top of the page

Why did you choose your university?

I was actually surprised to find there were certain things that stood out about each of the schools I applied to. I definitely hope I get to talk about that if I'm given an opportunity for an interview -
How many grad schools did you apply to?
SpeechLaedy replied to SpeechLaedy's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Wow! 14! Honestly if I had the finances to do so I'd have probably done the same because my stats are considered mediocre for speech as well. Which schools did you apply to? -

You certainly were answering the OP's question so I'd say you helped a ton ? You said they asked "us" all different questions. Were you interviewed in a group then or were you just speaking about everyone in general when you said that?- 200 replies

I just checked the document with all the essay prompts. It definitely said in a minimum of 300 words. I'd have to turn on my cpu to see how many words mine was but I know I made sure it was less than 1000 words/2 pgs max. And I was lost about the research proposal until I saw that there was the option to write about an idea for a community project. Idk why I hadn't noticed it for the longest time lol but yeah I did that instead since I was blank about the research -

Yeah the app fees were about the same for the schools I applied to. I saved all my paychecks for a couple months to pay for them. I live in NY which is particularly competitive and with my subpar gre scores I wanted to up my odds being that the odds of getting into the schools themselves are horrendous. Out of the 8 schools I applied to, about half or a little more than half have acceptance rates in the SLP programs of 8-13% of applicants. The rest were about 20-30%. Schools in other areas have much higher percentage rates of acceptance so ppl who live in those areas (and have stats more in range of what those schools accept) may not have to apply to as many. But I made the effort to try my best to afford up to 9 schools because I wanted to try my hardest to get into a school this semester. Really praying I won't have to apply again -
Nope. I haven't heard from them yet. I submitted my application about two days prior to the deadline so idk if that has anything to do with it

@hopefulslp2b when did you give in your applications? I am just now getting confirmations that my documents were processed. So I can't imagine getting interview invitations this soon -
Oh nice! That's great that they were able to give you some tips about the process . I actually work with about a dozen and never thought to ask them about that ??
-
Oh wow! So it's safe to say we should brush up on the material we've learned ? @maurmaur I feel the same EXACT way as you
-
That makes sense. But how do you know this? Have you done writing assignments during interviews before?
-
If you're concerned and you don't see it mentioned on the website, I'm sure you could email or call the graduate admissions dept
-
Yep. A handful of colleges do this. I applied to Touro today and they said on their website that "a personal interview and a writing sample may be requested" Edit: I'm located in NY so it may be something the schools in the more competitive areas do to further whittle down their selection

Questions I've seen ppl have been asked for SLP grad school: Tell us about a time when you had to modify your own communication to make yourself understood. Tell us about your multicultural experiences How do you make a decision on what is best for a client if they do not wish to receive therapy that is supported by current research I'd actually be interested in what type of material might be asked for written assignments during the interviews. Anyone have any ideas? I hear certain thing referring to anatomy

How did you/ are you planning to pay for school??
SpeechLaedy replied to grangeca's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
@wcslp I couldn't agree more. I was always brought up to go to school and basically worry about paying loans later. My husband however disagrees wholeheartedly and believes that alternate avenues of funding schooling is absolutely paramount. So as lazy as I can be with writing essays and such, I'll definitely be doing my best to apply to all the scholarships & assistantships I can out there. I used to think that loans are the norm and that since I've heard of people having to pay $150K back in loans in certain fields that it's perfectly acceptable to have to pay close to 100K in loans. Thank God my husband snapped me out of that. So hopefully I'll have success with these scholarships . Good luck to everyone as well in their financial endeavors! ? -
Hey all! I know we're all anxious to hear back from the programs we've applied to, and I hope & pray we are all accepted That being said.. after doing lots of research and talking to many people, it seems like sometimes (no matter how good your stats are) people don't have the best of luck getting into any programs when they apply. So me being a person who prepares for the worst but hopes for the best - I have been trying to figure out some alternate options just to prepare for the worst-case scenario, God-forbid it ever comes up. So far I think I would try to become a BCBA since I will be seeking that certification as an SLP anyway. Has anyone else put any thoughts toward this?

I am not applying to this school but I think it's great to know the possible questions that could be asked in this field in particular. So thank you for sharing. Even though some or even most may disagree, I think it's totally fine to post interview questions. I would have no problem doing the same. That being said, I do understand the frustrations of others who disagree with my POV. One thing those who would like to post the questions could do, is not specify which schools asked these questions. Just a thought if you'd rather not offend too many people- 200 replies
