  1. Thank you. I actually have already planned to contact the schools to find out my weaknesses (and some schools I applied to had about 8% acceptance rates so I know for some that, in itself, is something I can't help). But I figured I would try to wait until after I hear back from all of them. However, since I have not yet looked at when the deadlines for the few spring applications are for, do you think it would be wise to contact them now to get their answers in advance so I won't have to wait as long? And I know for sure that I will need to take the GREs again if things happen to not work out this round. I believe I got Q: 142, V: 152, and AW: 3.5 (didn't finish one essay in time - I know if I did, I would have at least gotten a 4.0). My GPA for my Psych BA degree is 3.6 but I believe my GPA for the SLP postbacc undergrad courses was something like a 3.7. I communicated often with my professors who gave my recommendations and they definitely remembered me and my work in their classes so I believe those reference letters were strong but I suppose there's no way to be sure unless the schools specifically point them out as a weakness. I also got a recommendation from an SLP at the school I work at whom I've observed and who essentially was responsible for getting me the job there. I actually saw her letter and it seemed good to me although it was short. I think I had a strong personal statement and gave it to my family members + husband to read and they are all very good at essay composition/editing so I basically had 5 people look over and make corrections/suggestions. If I change anything in my personal statements, it would be to add more about what drew me to those programs in particular. I touched on it in a few of my essays but didn't go more into detail because I didn't want to exceed the word count more than I already had. The ones I did get to go into detail about because the schools had bigger word counts, I've gotten interviews for. So I'm assuming that was a factor. But if I do choose to alter my SOP, I'll be sure to get in touch with my past professors to go over it and give pointers on how to possibly strengthen it
  2. I certainly would not like to give up. I had to fight to get into the undergrad program so I'm certainly not the giving up type for what I want to do. But financially - applying to these schools again and retaking the GREs would be another $1000+ dollars that I'm not sure I'll have after one more round of applications (God-forbid it becomes necessary). I have already planned on applying to programs for the Spring though. So I'll be looking into the programs in NY that offer it. My worry with a fully online program would be that I would not do well since there's no face to face interaction and it's not the type of education I'm used to. I have never taken a single online course before. Some people thrive whether or not courses are taken in-person or online, but since I've never even taken an online course, I'm really not sure how I would do
  3. I wish I could be an SLPA but there is no such thing here in NY ?. And I was looking into the BCBA requirements and it just sort of seems like it would be a lot of work (1500 hours of supervised experience, etc). I think we only need 375 hours of observation for SLP MA degree so idk, 1500 seems a bit much to me
  4. Trying to think of another field I could possibly go into. Thought about BCBA but I don't think that will work out for me after all. Anyone happen to know any info about Music or Art Therapy? I haven't gotten to researching it yet but will definitely do that this week. Does anyone know if there's a demand for those jobs or what the pay is like or what education is necessary? I'm in NY but any info would be appreciated.
  5. Anyone out there who is waiting to hear back and have only received rejections so far? How is everyone coping? I applied to 8 schools and so far 5 have been rejections and I've interviewed at two who I still have not heard from. Every time I get an email my heart sinks even further smh. Anyone thinking what the next step might be if worst case scenario happens? I'm starting to consider how many times I would be willing or financially able to apply again and whether or not I will consider a change of career path (again, worst case scenario). I hope we all do hear some good news soon! But until then, I would love to hear from others in the same position if there are any out there
  6. Hey all. So I live in NY and I'm starting to look for flexible semi-steady part time jobs that I can possibly carry with me throughout grad school (hopefully if I'm accepted). I already babysit some weekends for about $14/hr for about 4 hrs (this is in addition to my full-time job). I'm wondering if being a waitress is a good option but I'm not sure what waitress hours are typically like or how much they get or how much tips are normal (in sure it varies widely). Does anyone have any experience with this or have any suggestions for part time jobs I could look for?
  7. Thanks! I definitely hope they thought I did well. It was actually a 2-on-1 interview. And as soon as I got there, they slapped me with a big fat writing sample that I tooootally wasn't expecting smh. Thankfully the topic wasn't too bad at all. Guess we'll see what happens! They did inform me that the first wave of acceptances already went out, so if they have spots left, hopefully they will make room for me. Sigh. The waiting game continues...
  8. Yep! Same here! 16 SLPs on staff at my school. I have observed more than half of them and was a per diem floater teachers aide for about a year (got to see every behavior and syndrome in the entire school) then was placed as a full-time permanent teachers aide in a preschool ABA room and have LOVED IT. I don't think it's doing anything for me with adding any incentive for these programs, but who knows what's going on behind the scenes. I'd say if you can get yourself into a school or hospital setting or anywhere where SLPs are on staff, that it could add valuable experience you can speak about in your revised personal statements. And besides that, I say if you did not get competitive GRE scores, to retake it - because I think my scores are biting me in the butt with a lot of these colleges since many of the schools use them to weed out a percentage of the competition. All the best! Edit: Oh! And I just remembered the director of my program at QC, Prof. Ball telling me that during my year off I should try to gain experience in various populations so I have an idea which population I would like to work with. It would give your personal statement some focus and direction and show the schools that you have used your time wisely.
  9. Soooo I had an interview and basically BLANKED on so many questions that I KNEW the answers to!! I graduated about a year - 2 yrs ago but still remembered a lot of info that just REFUSED to present itself during the interview. Of course - after the interview, the answers came flowing like a river smh. Thankfully the interviewers seemed to understand my struggle. But it was definitely nerve-wracking! Other than those questions, I felt I did okay. I was asked What do you need to look out for in a language sample, what were some aspects of form and content, what were some examples of speech disorders and also language disorders, what course was my favorite (based on the material)...there were more but I just can't remember. I will be brushing up on all of my notes from here on out if I am fortunate to get more interviews!
  10. Yep. Same thing ended up happening to me, but of course - it happened while I was on the phone with QC grad admissions telling them how it wasn't working when it magically decided to work But yeah, it was a rejection. Sucks though - because I do love that college and would've loved the chance to continue my studies there. Ah well. Had an interview at Touro the other day. They asked some very unexpected nerve-wracking questions but I'm hoping it went as well as I thought it did
  11. I just got an email today from Queens that I can check the decision on the portal. However, I clicked the link to the portal, signed in, and there was no link t to take me to the decision page. But being that there's only 15 spots and I didn't ever get an interview (and didn't get a phone call like the rest of the people who were offered admission) and have average stats, I can safely assume without a decision link that I was rejected ?
  12. I've heard similar things about Touro College but not sure how true it all is. How did you get this info on UH?
  13. This is INSANE how NO ONE seems to have information on the interview process or any info whatsoever on this program!! ?????
  14. @slpgrad620 I didn't get any response yet from Queens. Smh. Apparently there are only 15 spots to fill there (which was less than I remembered). So I wouldn't be surprised if I wasn't accepted, even though I would absolutely love to be. I did get called for an interview yesterday for Touro though, so I guess that's good news
  15. Has anyone ever interviewed at Touro that could give some insight into the interview process? I just got called for an interview tonight (after 7 PM - is it just me or is that really late/weird? ?) so I'm excited! Any info on the program would be helpful too. Thanks!
  16. Thanks so much @maurmaur for your very thorough responses! Really helped! And I'll be sure to message you if I have any more questions (which I probably will have ?)
  17. Bump! This is a valuable topic that I saw and hoping to hear if anyone else has more to add The struggle is most definitely realll
  18. Oh wow! Thanks for letting me know! It sucks having to wait so long, especially since there are people on the results page who interviewed in March and were already accepted
  19. I have researched this forwards and backwards and yet I still do not understand the differences between getting an Advanced Cert. in ABA vs becoming an ABA Therapist/ BI. Would someone please care to explain? Because I planned on getting my Advanced Cert. in ABA as a backup if I am not accepted into a program (hopefully that won't happen ) - but it seems like from what was said, I may not be able to become a BCBA without a masters degree? Please help me out here..
  20. I'm waiting on Hofstra as well! I saw on the results page that on March 15th, someone said: "To the Hofstra poster below, I emailed them today and they said they expect to notify all applicants within the next two weeks!" - So I'm assuming we should most likely hear from them this coming week. Praying for positive newsss!
  21. I have wanted to but I've been kind of apprehensive about it. I wanted to do that with LIU Post since I had an interview there about 4 wks ago and still have not heard back. They said I should get a response in 2 wks after the interview so I don't know what to think seeing that so much time has passed (and I already emailed my interviewer a week ago so I don't want to annoy her). I'm still waiting on Hofstra's decision. ?
  22. I know that at Queens College, the supervisors are right there in the session with you. For me I think I like the supervision via cameras so I don't feel like I'm being micromanaged right in front of the client.
  23. It was today lol Yeah. I agree. It was pretty much the same thing. I was hoping to "schmooze" someone significant in the admissions process but I believe there was no such person present. Oh well. At least I tried ? I do agree though.. It def made me come out there thinking I'd really like to go there if I get the opportunity to (with some funding). Seems like they really pay attention to their students
  24. Grr. That's why I was battling whether or not to go in the first place lol I definitely want to swing that vote! ? But I suppose you're right about getting info about the school... I hope it's extra information that I wouldn't get on the website
  25. Anyone here attending open houses for schools they haven't yet heard from (and may not even hear from by the open house date)? I have only heard people going to open houses when they're accepted, waitlisted, or just started applying to schools ?
