  1. Not saying you shouldn't post it here, because you're definitely welcome to! - But it might be more helpful to post your question in this thread as well since many people follow it and get notifications when someone posts something in it.
  2. I really don't think so. I think they just check to set that you had them. I'm pretty sure their more concerned with your last 60 or your overall performance in the SLP/CSD courses. You can always email the schools to ask if they take the grades of those prerequisite courses into account for admission (without telling them what you got in them or disclosing that you've already applied, etc)
  3. How do other GA benefits work? The one I applied for apparently only pays $10.50/hr and that's it ? I was under the impression that GAs paid for part of your tuition
  4. This actually reminded me to email the clinical the director about when I may expect to hear back regarding my GA application. I'd definitely just email whoever is in charge of it and find out to give yourself peace of mind.
  5. I was going to say the same thing. But you just need to assess which you think will be the best to add right now. For me, learning strategies to deal with certain behaviors was a valuable experience to add to my resume because I already worked at several educational facilities with a range of age groups from birth to 12 yrs old. So I wanted to know more about working with children with a variety of special needs, goals & taking data, and behavior modification since it would give me exposure to an entirely new population and get me into the practice of taking data and dealing w/ behaviors which will help later as an SLP. I also got a lot of experience working in a team of teachers, therapists, psychologists, and social workers (which I am not sure if you get being a paraprofessional) - had numerous goal meetings for the students in my classroom and got to hear feedback from each professional and work together to figure out the best way to better facilitate learning and behavior mod. Also if you work in a schol doing ABA, chances are - they will have SLPs on staff who you will be able to observe (and many schools allow you to get your observation hours while on the clock so you can get paid doing it! - much better than taking off work or lessening your hours to be able to schedule your obs. hours elsewhere). Good luck to you and def feel free to ask any questions!
  6. I didn't have a lower GPA, but I did have a lower GRE score than they had and I got in. If your GPA is that close, I honestly wouldn't worry too much about a .04 difference. I had a strong personal statement and great letters of rec that I believe made a big difference. Plus, I had an interview at the school. I think if you get an interview, that in itself seems to increase your odds.
  7. To add to this, some schools may want to know why your GPA is lower. In some cases, I've heard of people mentioning in their SOP what happened (not focus on it, but touch upon it like how you had to persevere through such a tough time - something like that?). However, there are many people who say that you should only keep positive things in your SOP and not include such things. So I wonder if anyone one here has any thoughts to add to that. I'm not sure how colleges receive SOP that include why their GPA or other statistic is low. Oh and I meant to add that the experiences you have under your belt are really great!! I think that (if you haven't already), you should greatly consider including what you've learned from those experiences into your SOP. Beefing it up and asking many knowledgable people in the writing realm (professors, writing center, etc) to look it over would really help to make a powerful personal statement. All the best!!
  8. You could talk to the financial aid office if you're not sure of its enough. I believe there's a max you can take out per semester or something like that. But I'm not totally sure. So the financial aid dept could probably walk you through whether it is enough or help you figure out what options are available for you if it's not enough (PLUS loans, private loans, etc).
  9. Oh! Hahaha! I didn't even realize it was you I had discussed it with before ? you're so right ???
  10. Yeah that's the same thing my husband says -"It's only temporary. " I guess I may be taking it harder than he is lol I don't like to cause any stress for anyone, especially my husband, but he constantly assures me that help be fine and that he loves me and loves that I have this great opportunity that will be great for me and us in the long run. Guess I should just get used to the idea that we won't be seeing much of each other which is unlike how it is now. You have a good point about the breaks in between though I'll try to make sure we make good use out of them. Thanks for your input, and thank you everyone!!!
  11. I am actually in an ABA classroom so I've seen a lot of that myself already working in a special education school. Thanks though! ?
  12. Oh I submitted it back in the beginning of April I believe. Around the first week, probably..
  13. Lol! Well, $75 is a small price to pay if there happens to be an oversight on their part and they end up giving you a full scholarship ? And the interview went well (IMO). If you or anyone would like any details, feel free to PM me. But yeah, I guess we'll see what happens. All the best to you though! Maybe you'll get an interview anyhow! lol
  14. Aw man! I've never heard of this till now! And the due date was yesterdayyy. Sounds like such a great opportunity. I'll have to try to remember that next year. Thanks so much for sharing that!
  15. Just in case anyone accepted their offer to LIU Post and is looking for the starting Fall 2017 FB group, I thankfully stumbled upon the link while browsing the results page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1253112051404498/
  16. Omg LOVE this website so far! Such a great resource! Now I'm starting to wonder what else I'm missing out there lol
  17. Yep. Heard back from them on the 4th via email to schedule an interview (coincidentally - or not - the same day I called them to ask if they had sent out emails to SLP Scholarship applicants). Made the interview then ended up having to reschedule. Once you cancel though, it's a pain in the NECK to get in touch with someone to find out when you will get an email to pick another date/time since you can't just reschedule online. The woman in charge of it never picks up the phone. I had to call them a million times in a row until I think I got on their nerves a little bit and they patched me through to her. That day, I got the email to reschedule. So if I were you, I would try to call and ask if they have sent out all their interview invites or if they are still reviewing applications - something to that effect. I'm trying to research info on how the interview process goes. I know there will be a writing assignment. Not sure on what or what questions they will ask..
  18. I just read through this. Man. That is an AWFUL situation to be in. If anyone else might be in a similar situation, it could be beneficial to call the schools you are applying to and ask if you can get a professional reference from work or from an SLP you've observed many times or something. This is also why it's important to make as many connections as you can during your undergrad with the professors so you have more than 2 options for who can write your LOR. I actually had the same scare a few months ago and emailed a school asking if I could send them a LOR from an SLP or my supervisor at the school I work at since one adjunct professor had an inactive email for that semester and I couldn't get in touch with her. They actually said it would be fine to do that. But everyone's situation is different so yeah, when in doubt contact the schools ??
  19. Oh nice!! Okay that sounds good. I'll see if I can find videos on YouTube first before I pay for something like that. It sounds very helpful though! Thanks for that info!
  20. I just checked out Master Clinician. I actually don't think I've heard of it till now. What is on the site and is it worth paying for the subscription/membership?
  21. @Kslptobe congrats on all you have accomplished!! That's really great that you were able to succeed despite the lack of support from your undergrad professors. I love to read and talk to people who succeed despite the odds. Because I'm one of those people too! I have no learning disability but just have crazy test anxiety and landed some low gre scores as well (Q: 141, V: 152, AW: 3.5). I applied to 8 schools and after numerous rejections, finally got into one of my top choice schools. I'm so very glad to hear you got into your top choice school. I know you will succeed in your graduate studies! ?
  22. I've been working at a special education school (birth - 12 yrs) and started as a floater teacher's aide. Got to go into the gen ed rooms as well. I saw every single disorder/delay in that entire school in one year and got so much exposure to all the different team members associated with the children's development. We have goal meetings, talk to parents, and also have opportunities to volunteer at events (relays, donations/drives, fundraisers/fashion shows) which you may be able to add to your resume as well. I'm now a permanent teacher's assistant there in an ABA preschool 8-1-3 classroom with children on the spectrum. I love it because I can actually make special connections with the children and see their progression (and regression) in action. I am now able to voice my ideas on what I think we can try as a team to help certain children in the classroom, etc. It's definitely differs from floating, but I loved both. So if you have the opportunity to do something like that and you're interested in working with children or trying it out, it could be a great (and also challenging) experience. There are 10+ SLPs at my job so I also made sure to observe many of their sessions and keep in contact with them. One of them wrote me a recommendation letter for grad school. So keep that in mind as well! Make as many connections as you can wherever you go. Networking is such a powerful and useful tool ???? All the best!
  23. I just had an interview to become a GA at my school in the clinic You should specifically ask if you get a discount on tuition because they told me we only get $10/hr and that's pretty much it. The value in a GA position (for my case at least) really comes from the experience you gain. We get to help the clinicians and also form special bonds/relationships with the professors that many of the other grad students may not get the opportunity to make, which can lead to networking and other possibly great opportunities later on. And like ell012 said, you get to see what goes on behind the scenes. For me, I see it as the closest thing to becoming an SLPA in NY (which does not exist unfortunately), so I want to learn as much as I can. That being said, there is also the added responsibilities that it brings. Whether or not you want to have to balance a job during grad school is something you would have to consider. Although I am a lot better and continue to work on it, I am not the best at time management. I am still willing to challenge myself to get better and I believe I will succeed as a GA + grad student. But everyone is different, and it's better to be honest with yourself about whether you will or will not want to juggle added responsibilities. And for someone who has a family or financial responsibilities to take care of, $10/hr may not be feasible, even if becoming a GA is a good opportunity. I don't have any children right now, but my husband and I definitely had to weigh the pros and cons before we decided becoming a GA would actually be a good decision for us in the long run. I would have to decrease my hours at my full time job or quit to allow time for this new commitment. So if I start as a GA in the Fall, my hubs may have to pay my bills and other things which is added stress for him since he pays most of the bills already. But since we're all about "the big picture," he will do his best to manage that since it is for the greater good. Someone in a different situation may or may not see the same cons, or it may not greatly affect them like it did for us. Hope that helps!
  24. Yeah it's been about a year or more for me since I've taken my coursework and I definitely planned on refreshing my memory over the summer. There's one girl I know in my proven right now who started last year. I'll ask her what she thinks about it and let you know what she says.
