I agree! I've received so much great advice and support I would've never received otherwise. So much information to help us get prepared for each step of this process ?

That was definitely me until I happened to see other blog posts about the anxiety that sites like gradcafe can give us hopeful grads lol Coincidentally, as soon as I stopped worrying about it, I received my first response from a school (an interview - but hey, it's something!). Plus, I ended up seeing from the surveys and other forum posts that for many of the schools I applied to, ppl hear back really late around March or even late April. So I just said my prayer and have sort of made peace with the waiting game (despite even the early responses I've seen other ppl have had who have applied to the same schools as me). Good luck to you and to everyone! *deep breaths* "Woosahhh"

Student Loan Debt & Repayment
SpeechLaedy replied to SpeechLaedy's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Yeah my sister follows his stuff. But living in NY, being married, and making what I make...It takes YEARS to pay that kind of debt off. So idk. Although I've already researched Dave Ramsey, I suppose it's worth looking into a bit more -
I've definitely heard of programs that have you sign contracts that you agree not to work via gradcafe applicants. I think it's absurd, but unfortunately it does happen. I'm sure people end up finding some kind of workaround though

About how much student debt do you have and how do you plan to repay it? I'm at over 40K right now and my loans are due for a payment soon since I graduated some time ago now. I seriously can't afford these payments with all the other things I pay for. I feel like I'm stuck and I definitely don't want any lack of future payments since that would hurt my credit score. Anyone dealing with this and found some sort of solution or a way to help?

Ugh. This doesn't sound good! I feel like scouting the campus and doing a survey for all the CSD students smh lol

Speaking of Interview Attire...

Ugh. Yeah I had to walk 3 long Brooklyn blocks for my last interview in the rain. It was awful and my feet hurt like crazy. I say flats if you have to walk a good portion of the way (unless you're one of those that aren't phased by prolonged time in heels) -
Interview Writing Samples
SpeechLaedy replied to SpeechLaedy's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Yes I do. I wish they did have the option to type because that definitely is a lot easier than writing. I actually never realized that I wouldn't be typing the writing sample until you just said that ? I'll try to ask the folks who have done interviews there about that. So thanks for bringing that up! Have you never taken an anatomy course in the CSD major? If it's part of your coursework it may be asked about. I've seen posts on here mentioning you may have to brush up on the basics about it -
Interview Writing Samples

I am the EXACT same way lol which is why the GREs were a bit of a challenge for me even though I practiced -
Yes! I totally agree! I forgot to mention that you should definitely do what you're most passionate about I work at a special needs school and a social worker comes in and has a push in session with one of the children in the class every week. Social workers are definitely apart of the team of people SLPs will work with and it will benefit you to learn how best to support families and find support for them because as an SLP we will have to do that too.

Your posts are seriously too long lol but I get it (I'm working on my editing issues as well). I honestly think linguistics will make learning a bunch of things in CSD a little easier (especially phonetics if you're not already familiar with it. Before I got into the CSD major, I took about 4 or 5 linguistics courses to get a feel for what I may learn. It made me breeeeze through my phonetics classes plus gave me additional info that the CSD major did not give me but was really cool info I could keep in mind as a future SLP. Basically, choose what is best for you. I would think that it not only looks better to have prerequisite courses for CSD done (that I believe your school offers about 6 or so) but it also will help you not have to add to your graduate courseload. It may look a little better I suppose to major in linguistics, but I personally think the prerequisites are more important (after all, they're a requirement to get into a lot of schools anyway - whereas majoring in linguistics isn't). Social work is a related field so that should honestly be enough. But if you're really worried, maybe it would be a good idea to call some of the schools you're interested in and talk to or email the Directors of the programs or someone in the graduate admissions office. I, myself, am an out of fielder coming from psychology. I'm curious... What turns you off about psych?

Anyone heard anything regarding Touro's program? I've searched the forum and have not seen any positive reviews about it :-/

You know, as soon as I posted it (after only skimming through the OP's post), I thought - I wonder if the person has any disabilities. XD. So I totally agree -

Interview Writing Samples
SpeechLaedy replied to SpeechLaedy's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Oh wow! No time limit?! That's very very interesting. I didn't know there were schools that had no time limit on the writing ? For the writing you did, I assume you had to have the intro-body-conclusion type of setup.. or was it more of a free-format? -
I've heard people receiving extensions from the schools they've been accepted to for that reason. I guess some schools use their discretion if you notify them of such a dilemma and may give you some sort of extension. Now if it gets close to the second extended deadline and the waitlist school still hasn't said anything... that might be tricky

Interview Writing Samples
SpeechLaedy replied to SpeechLaedy's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
You said it took you 15 min. How long did they give you to write it though (max time)? And thanks. The only way I won't stress too much about it is preparing lol I get really nervous with writing while timed. My brain freezes up if I don't practice a little. -

Skype interview would be ideal for you then lol I had a Skype job interview once. Put a nice fancy necklace on over a black shirt with my pajamas on ? Got the job too! ? -
Hey all. So for those of you who have had interviews that included writing samples, how long did you have to write them? 10 minutes?...5 minutes?! ? Was there any word-count or character limit/minimum? Any subject matter you might suggest to review? I know it may sound like a lot but honestly, ANY tips would be helpful. I am terrified about the writing sample especially after knowing now that it is unavoidable so I'm trying to prepare as much as I can. I already planned on setting a timer and writing about certain things about myself or SLP in that time to get ready for it, but it would really ease my anxiety if I had a better idea of the amount of time I'd be working with or any helpful info.

Question for LIU Post Interviewees
SpeechLaedy replied to SLP2Bhopefully's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
It's sooooo funny you just said that because I literally JUST found that out while reading through old survey posts on here a minute ago lol Thank GOD for this forum. But I scored a 3.5 on my AW because I didn't finish my first essay in time so I most certainly will have to write something. Womp Womp ? -
