  1. How'd the Skype interview go? I'm curious if you had to do a writing assignment too
  2. In hindsight, I think you're right. And I just remembered, the woman, Beth, who I've been in contact with has been really helpful and responsive. So I'll be ignoring the negatives I've heard thus far since I haven't heard anything from ppl who've actually been in the program ? Oh, and April definitely seems like an eternity. The fact that the email mentioned something about possibly hearing as late as June is absolutely absurd ?
  3. Yeah exactly. I actually haven't heard good things about Touro at all. ? Seems like ppl in the department are rude and the program isn't that great. I'm hoping I'll hear a positive account about the program to offset all the negative. I still hope I am accepted there (or to any of the schools I applied to, obviously)
  4. Anyone else get an email from Touro today about when they will give out decisions? I got so nervous opening it, thinking it was an actual decision ?
  5. For those of you who were waitlisted, when did you give in your apps? I wonder if the waitlisting has anything to do with that (later app = the later they get to review it?)
  6. I applied to Hofstra, Touro, Adelphi, Brooklyn, Hunter, & LIU Post. I had my interview with Post this week. They said they'd get back to me within 2 wks (but I've heard of people finding out earlier). The other schools I've heard send decisions around March/April but sometimes even as late as may for the CUNYs I believe, based on what I've read in these forums from past applicants
  7. Yes!! So annoying!! Keep thinking it's a response but nope!
  8. Really?? Wowww. I'm shocked that's all they did! Thank you so much for that information!! I'll let my parents know right now
  9. Oh wow! Congrats on the interview! I've never heard of anyone being called to be notified before. Did they email you as well in addition to the call? I usually put my parents home phone number down for places I expect don't really need to contact me via phone so that would suck if they only call b/c who knows when I'd ever get the message ?
  10. Thanks for the heads up! I just checked my email and checked the application page. I got nothing over here too ? If you didn't already, maybe you should try looking at the application page. I believe I read something on here once saying that Hunter will sometimes update your status on the application page before actually notifying you via email
  11. Just had my interview today at LIU Post. Dr. Rubinstein was such a pleasure to meet! For anyone who will be interviewing there, I say take it easy. She makes you feel very comfortable and at ease. I also had to do a writing sample
  12. I'm actually going over some interview questions now. Not really rehearsing, but just trying to get my brain thinking of some of these things prior to the interview I have in 2 days so I won't have to think as much if they actually ask me and I don't prepare myself lol I actually like looking at the different things about the schools that make me interested in them. And I made sure to reread my personal statement so I can back up my interest in the school more based on what I said in it. I really hope it goes well! Good luck to you!
  13. I totally agree with @Crimson Wife. Whichever will add valuable experience is the best. If you can observe/shadow SLPs there and volunteer in another area of the hospital, I think that would be great. Volunteering in another department may give you a separate, but also important, character-building experience (learning how to empathize and connect with a variety of patients, etc.). Both would serve as great points of interest in your personal statement or in any interviews you attend. Maybe you can call/email someone to find out what the duties of volunteers are there. Good luck!
  14. Question for everyone.. How many days did you all need to prepare for your interviews (i.e.,go over possible questions, brush up on your coursework, etc)?
  15. I'm in the same boat. ??? This LIU Post interview is the only thing keeping me afloat right now ?
  16. Ah! I've definitely been on that page before many times! Oddly enough, I've only been able to find it via Google searches. Even now I can't figure out how to navigate the site to get to it lol Maybe it's because I'm currently using the mobile version. Idk. Anywho, thanks for the link! We will stalk that page together! ?✊?
  17. Ah, you're the best!! ? Thanks for the update! I'll have to stalk my email now lol Although I wonder how they were notified... Hmm.. Which results page is this by the way? Do you happen to know the link to it?
  18. It really sounds like you know a sufficient amount of stuff! If you got those grades I think you'll be fine. But I do understand your concern and it would be interesting to hear what others who did the same as you have to say. But if you're worried, maybe you can just brush up on the things you fear will slip away. Honestly, I know a bunch of things have gone out of my brain, and I learned in physical classrooms, asked all the questions, studied and went to the professors office hours until I properly understood the material. So I think forgetting the material happens to everyone. I have an interview next week. And I sure enough will be going back to my notes to brush up on the things my brain was happy to learn but even more happy it seems to push them out into the land of forgetfulness ? YouTube helped me a lot with the anatomy though. I think the YouTube channel was AnatomyZone or something like that. I used them the most. The visuals of the anatomic structures really helped the info stick when I was learning it
  19. Anyone else getting emails lately regarding open houses at the schools they've applied to? Is it recommended to attend if you've already applied (i.e., is there a greater chance of being accepted/considered if you go)? Or are those typically for people who haven't applied yet and it's just spam mail from being part of the mail list once you apply?
  20. Haha! Don't worry, your post was definitely eloquent enough And I actually have had off all week long thanks to working in a school so no sort of time constraints here lol
  21. I find this post hilarious lol. Only because I totally get why you wrote it and have seen so many other people with the same sentiments regarding this site. Some people may totally agree with you and may even take your advice. Others like me who understand, but don't agree since we have a different/more positive perspective about the GradCafe experience will definitely continue to seek the helpful advice and information shared here. But hey, some people may have needed your post so I'm all for you sharing your side of it. People should definitely steer clear from comparing stats. What I have found is that seeing others with similar subpar stats does give me hope when I see they have been accepted into a speech program (especially to one that I've applied to). This site, although at first contributing a bit to my worry, has quickly become an anxiety-reducer since I have more information here in regards to when people start hearing back and what kind of questions to expect for SLP program interviews than is available anywhere else. So I'm definitely grateful for this site because I'd be left in the dark about a lot of things otherwise. Plus, it's cool to connect with others going through the same things you are. I know people have even made Facebook groups to connect during the graduate school year. But yeah, different strokes as they say. Congrats on "living the dream"! I'm hoping I will be accepted soon enough as well
  22. That's amazing!! Congrats!!! I've heard of STEP programs but what is the one at that college about?
  23. How are everyone's interview preparations going? I have my interview next week so I need to get crackin on some of these interview questions and practice writing ?
  24. @bettafish293 here's one post from this website after doing a Google search for "switching from social work to speech pathology". I'm sure you will find similar stories if you research something like that "I am a career changer from social work over to SLP. I was a case manager for a while, worked in a rehab clinic and currently work for a human services coop for people with disabilities. I think that my experience was one of the main reasons I was accepted to graduate school this year. I made a point in my SOP to discuss my skills in coming up with therapeutic goals, dealing with difficult behavior, and working with people with physical and mental disabilities. I think that there is a lot of overlap in the underlying philosophy's of both fields, mainly in the therapeutic process and coming up with attainable treatment goals. I also especially focused on how my work with difficult populations proved that I was able to handle the types of patients that we might be faced with as SLP's. Even with a low undergrad GPA I was accepted to several programs this year. I also completed my pre-recs and worked hard for a good GRE score. I really think the key is showing how your experience can translate to the field. Good luck!"
