  1. I used to work in an expensive dept store that sold interview type clothes so I have a bunch. Pretty much any nice blouse (button down or dressy looking) and knee-length skirt will do. I've worn sleeveless professional dresses with a cardigan or suit jacket over it with a nice necklace or bracelet. H&M, Forever 21, Rue 21, ROSS (if you have one in your state), and Charlotte Russe should have some nice, inexpensive dressy attire.
  2. Or if a writing sample is even done lol that just sounds like a pain in the butt to set up something like that ?
  3. I am praying I get into a school with only taking the prerequisites. But I definitely know there are many people who change careers paths after getting the first bachelors and only take the prerequisites necessary for entry into the graduate speech programs. I say as long as you fulfill the prereqs *needed* for each program (listed on their websites), that you still have a shot just as any other applicant. Just make sure you have relevant experience to back it all up and that you get REALLY good grades in the speech coursework. One question though.. Your speech department at your school is called Linguistics? At my school, there was a linguistics program but ppl who wanted to do speech went into the Communication Sciences and Disorders program (I'm guessing your school doesn't have two different programs and lumps them into one?)
  4. Wait, so did you ask because you didn't need to do a writing sample during your interview? I have an interview with them so I'm trying to figure out if the writing sample was mandatory for all or not
  5. Thank you so much for sharing your experience! I have an interview at the end of the month and I'm so happy to hear that she was a pleasure to interview with. Last thing I would need is to feel under a lot more pressure than I already do ?
  6. Yeah that's so true. I went to BOCES in high school and studied veterinary science. Right before I was done with the program, I quit and then in college ended up changing my major three times before finally picking SLP. You may be different and actually know what you want and are SURE of it. But like the others say, definitely make sure you are 100% positive before you commit to something long-term like that. If I knew back in high school that I definitely wanted to do speech, I would have LOVED a 5 year program (I ironically didn't know those existed until earlier today when a coworker mentioned it - so it's funny you posted about it today)
  7. YAAAAHOOO! Finally I can post on here. The site was down earlier. Got my first response from a school and it's an interview for LIU Post!! I copped the last interview spot in Feb Edit: Is there anything I should bring to the interview? Have any of you been required to bring anything?
  8. Ah okay. Well I got no acceptance letters or any response letters yet so hopefully if I'm accepted, I'll get a later date in that regard
  9. Ah! I was wondering about that! I thought it was some kind of error! Okay I'll have to dig through to find our 2015 tax documents
  10. When do you plan to submit your FAFSA? Is there a deadline? I have some missing tax info left to fill out so I'm just trying to figure out if I need to worry about that now or what (or if it'll interfere with finding out about funding from the schools I applied to)
  11. Omg I didn't hear from them yet either! And I applied to them a few days before the deadline. Smh. This process is so frustrating especially when you hear other ppl have already heard back
  12. Wait... you already heard form LIU??? Oyy.. When did they contact you and how.. via mail or email? Congrats on getting an interview!
  13. Ughhhh!! I've heard from no oneeeee T____T. These NY schools take foreverrr Hopefully I'll get accepted somewhere
  14. I don't think so. But I would call the school and talk to someone in graduate admissions to be sure
  15. Hm. I didn't even realize they calculated my GPA on there. I'll have to check this out myself
  16. YouTube is your friend for anatomy and pretty much anything else SLP related. I've watched sessions of certain disorders, looked at the epiglottis of numerous random people via endoscopies and also looked at barium swallow videos. I would say get acquainted with anatomy, IPA and phonetics, and research some speech, language and hearing disorders. Even just having a basic understanding will help you. But definitely prioritize learning aspects of the IPA and anatomy. If you can get some notes from any students you know who are on the SLP track, that'd be great too. Good luck! Some books on client experiences may interest you such as Still Alice, Ghost boy by Martin Pistorius, and some others. These really get me to think about how tough our future clients have it and get me to emphasize with certain struggles
  17. It may/may not do anything but at least your name will have a good possibility of standing out!
  18. Wow that's great! I would've agreed wholeheartedly! I would have even responded to the last email exchange too. Anywho, I hope everything works out! ("Interviewed beautifully" - man would I feel GREAT if a director of a program told me that!)
  19. @spitch924 if you haven't already, I suggest you check out Jeff Barton's post the he wrote yesterday I believe in this forum, titled "5 Common Application Questions Answered"
  20. Hey all. Now that applying to the schools is over, it's time to apply to scholarships for me. I see there are some sites that list a bunch and are even able to fill out your information for many of them if you pay like $15 or $20 for the month (if you just remember to cancel your subscription after). I know Scholarshipowl.com does this. Has anyone used sites like these or heard anything about people who have used them? What scholarship sites have you found to be easy to navigate?
  21. Omg . This is the holy grail of posts here . Thank you so much @Jeff Barton for sharing such valuable information from an inside perspective. The analogies were perfect! I'll have to read the rest of the comments in this thread when I get the chance. Thanks again!!
  22. Oh okay. Phew! Thanks for letting me know. I applied to both of those CUNY schools so I'm happy to know a ballpark time when they'll be giving out their verdicts. Not hearing from Adelphi now that I know someone got an answer is starting to freak me out though ? If you happen to hear back from your schools, you think you could give me a heads up? ?
  23. Yes! I totally forgot to mention that one. It would probably be a good idea to look into sites like care.com or Teachercare.com where you can put your resume and you can get email blasts about home child care positions in the area. I have used Teachercare and it went really well
