You're not the only one feeling this way. I was reading an article the other day saying that graduate students are at high risk for depression and anxiety. I'm so sorry you have to go through this. I am assuming there are counselling/therapy services at your uni. I live with a mental illness, but even if I am in recovery for many years, I still do a couple of things to make sure I don't fall back into depression/anxiety. I do yoga on campus. I always go to bed at 10pm no matter what I have left to do. I always allow myself to have that time to rest. And I take 3 meals a day and do not allow myself to be checking emails or anything else while I am doing that. I listen to a lot of music also and take a lot of walks just to be thinking about other things. I go shopping every once in a while and reserve time to watch funny tv shows with my family. I also have a good agenda and whenever I get up in the morning, I give myself goals of things that I need to do in that day so that I don't end up feeling overwhelmed by everything that needs to be done. And I try to always do things in advance and prioritize tasks. I'm a highly anxious person and that's how I've managed to feel less anxious. Whenever I start anxiety coming in, I sit down, and I just write down everything that needs to be done and prioritize and the fact that I see it on paper and divided into small chunks helps me a LOT. I know this comes across as simple, but for me, it has been incredibly helpful because I have a very heavy schedule.

I did a little bit of reading (I sometimes skim through other students that have completed their master's or doctoral thesis in my field out of curiosity and to learn the process of academic research for myself). I was very disappointed but not surprised to find out that earlier this year, a student has done a research project on the topic I was contemplating. This is someone I don't know btw. And her methods are more-so what I had in mind for a potential doctoral research. I looked at her work, went straight to her conclusions and limitations to see if there were any gaps in research that I could explore in my own research project. Is that a good way to find new angles to a research topic that might already have been studied? Or should I choose a totally new research topic for a PhD?

Ah ok! Sorry for the confusion. Good luck, I hope you get it!

Hello! I haven't applied to this, I can't anyways because I am not a doctoral student but I believe that most of these scholarships give out their results around April, no?

Thoughts on bringing your significant other to your class?
Adelaide9216 replied to shadowclaw's topic in Teaching
Agreed. One of my professor was an indigenous man and he taught us indigenous history in Canada. He brought his wife as a guest speaker on residential school because she is a residential school survivor. In that context, it was totally appropriate. But what OP is describing sounds unprofessional to me. -
Why do you come (What keeps you coming back) to the Grad Cafe?

I just love learning from everyone here. I am a MSW student, I am considering applying for a PhD and this forum is gold to me. Also, in my MSW, I am one of two students who have chosen the thesis option and I feel like people here can understand me better in regards to this program choice.- 13 replies

Hello, does it make sense for a prospective student to have the same research proposal for multiple different programs (but programs that aren't in the same field)?
-
Is this for a PhD or a Master's program?

Hello, I forgot to give an update on this. So I did the conference in my city in June (I was selected to do a poster presentation). I did not win the best poster award, but I'm glad I got the opportunity to present when I hadn't even started my MSW. I've also applied for a conference in Paris, this time, to present, and I should know if I am selected next week. That would be in August 2018. And I am speaking with my supervisor about attending a conference in the country in June 2018 as well.

Hello, we're midway through the semester and I am starting to feel overwhelmed. I manage and I cope, but it's a lot, I wasn't expecting it to be so much especially considering the fact that I have a few extracurricular commitments. Plus, I handed in a 50% paper in one class today and I have no idea if what I did was okay, the guidelines weren't pretty clear. Anyone else feeling the same?

"Name faculty members"
Adelaide9216 replied to WildeThing's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
You usually ask faculty if they'd like to work with you while you're in the process of applying. -
Hello! Anyone here living and studying in France? I have a few questions for you. PM me.
-
Hello people, how are you guys coping so far with the first semester?
-
Hello! How do you get to choose which program to apply to when your research topic falls under many disciplines? I have an idea for a research project but I do not know if it belongs in Social Work, Communications or Criminology.

Lit review in feminist theory class
Adelaide9216 replied to Adelaide9216's topic in Coursework, Advising, and Exams
Hello, when I click on the link it says that it is not available for my account. -
Thanks for your answers. So I've spoken to them and they said that my background would be great for their program even if I've never studied in Coms before. However, since I want to write my thesis in French, it could be an issue since the prof I was aiming to work with speaks only English. She's suggested that I look into the work of two of her colleagues who read and understand French and that they could be in a commitee along with her. How do commitees work in PhD programs?

Lit review in feminist theory class
Adelaide9216 replied to Adelaide9216's topic in Coursework, Advising, and Exams
Hello! Thanks! I've chosen to do it on indigenous feminism(s). I want to give different definitions and then explore some of the controversies around the term. My keywords would be indigenous OR aboriginal AND feminism I have to look at 3-4 books and then draw out common themes or differences in relation to one another. She recommended that I look at Signs, differences and GLQ academic journals but I am struggling to find an example of what she wants us to do. Is a literature review and an review essay the same thing? -
Hello, so I have a concentration in gender and women's studies in my MSW program. I've never studied feminist theory before. I have to do a lit review by the end of the semester but must submit a proposal this week. I have chosen my topic, but I am really struggling to find an example of a literature review essay based on books on feminist theory. Is this normal? I've contacted my librarian but he is away for a conference for a couple of days and I am pulling my air out because I just want to see how this type of lit review is done in feminist courses. Help, anyone?

Women's/Feminist/Gender Studies Fall 2017
Adelaide9216 replied to kekology4's topic in Interdisciplinary Studies
I'll know by the end of this month if I got accepted to take part in my second international conference as a master's student. The first one was in my hometown, but this one would be in France. I'm finger-crossed. But they've received more than 400 applications- 232 replies
