  1. Hello! Is there some sort of database of all international conferences and research congress in the social sciences?
  2. I am also starting on the 5th. Have a happy back to school
  3. I hate the fact that we do not have access to our syllabus before class at my uni.
  4. I believe that feminist studies that integrate an intersectional approach to coursework and program would maybe be a good fit for you.
  5. Do we usually get our first payment on the September 1st or is it a few days later?
  6. I see that the form is online, but we cannot access it. We can only access it 24 hours before the deadline (which I find weird, it must be a bug.) Also, for my CV and other experiences, I've got a lot of volunteer experience and I don't know if it's worth it to put it all in there. I already cut a lot of the non-relevant stuff, but I would like to include everything else that's left because there were a lot of major volunteer experiences, even if they aren't "research-based". But I am attending a workshop at the end of next month at my uni and hopefully I'll get even more feedback, just like I did when I applied for SSHRC.
  7. That's amazing advice. Is jstor the equivalent of Scopus?
  8. I met with my class colleagues yesterday and everyone is very friendly.
  9. I went to the library today and borrowed the Powner's book you recommended.
  10. You're not too old for this. You're actually respecting yourself, your values, your interests and your life goals by going back to school to study something that you love despite your age. I respect you for that choice. In my opinion, it takes a lot of courage to follow one's heart to pursue our true goals in life.
  11. I have to miss class in October, and I hesitate to email my professors now about it. I am starting class next week. I don't know if they'll think I'm weird for contacting them now. I'm just anxious because I don't know if there are exams or assignments during the week I'll be away from campus. EDITED : I sent them. I will come across as weird but anyway. Also this fall is going to be so busy. I have a lot of extracurricular activities this term and I hope I will be able to make it through. I've always been able to manage workload pressures because I have always been involved in my community despite going to school, but this semester is going to be quite intense.
  12. If you plan to study out-of-province in order to bring a specific expertise back to your hometown (meaning, you would move back to where you are originally from), is that something you can mention?
  13. Hello! I am already attending McGill for my master's studies. And I did my undergraduate studies there too. But during my undergraduate studies, I did all of my assignments and exams in French (students in Quebec have this right even if they attend English universities).
  14. I've also seen a lot of my class colleagues get hired (well guaranteed a job) by their field placements many months before graduating.
  15. Hello, thanks for your insight. My university offers free (sponsored) English 1-credit courses geared towards academia. I've decided to register for one this term, and another one in the winter. And I'll probably register for other ones in the summer. I really want to improve my English grammar. It's going to be a little bit more work, but it will make me feel more secure when I will decide to which universities I want to attend for a PhD. I don't want to limit myself to my own region, there is a lot of interesting work that's being done across my country and internationally and it would be a shame to not benefit from these experiences because of a language barrier issue.
  16. Hello, that's what we did but there is only one systematic review we found on the topic. Our topic is getting "trendy" but doesn't have much litterature on it, and when there is, there isn't a lot of consensus or agreement on it as well. So it's complicated. But I guess that's the whole point of doing research on it and I am assuming that this is very typical when you do research. I'm just not used to it yet.
  17. Hello, we're almost at the end of the process. We were supposed to finish the review in early September, but it's going to be extented to January. We'll do the writing during the Fall. Apparently, it was ambitious for my coordinator to believe that we would finish the entire process of the review in 4 months. Things are a bit clearer now but I still feel sightly insecure about this and what I am doing (which my supervisor and research coordinator already know). But I am not giving up. It's my first time doing something like this and I can tell that my supervisor believes in me and my abilities, so I try to hang on to that when I get discouraged.
  18. Thank you everyone for your insight.
  19. I am interested in mental health as well. Otherwise, I wouldn't do media interviews about it and share my own story. But I agree that it's a bit early to make a clear choice now. I was just thinking and being reflective about it. But you are right, it's important to keep options open.
  20. Or does any of you know about any specific newspapers or magazines that touch on social justice issues? I know about Social Work Helper but that's about it.
  21. I live in Canada and I applied to four schools.
  22. The thing is that I get numerous media interview requests to talk about mental health and mental illness and everytime, I feel like I do not know enough on the topic to be called an "expert" on it, other than being an expert of my own experience and journey. That's why I want to do a PhD on that topic. I feel like there is always something missing in the interviews that I give.
  23. I am following this thread because I have the exact same questions.
  24. I am starting classes on September 5th, but I already have a lot of workshops next week so I am starting on Monday basically. I am also going through a depressive phase since this summer and thinking about school actually helps me feel less depressed.
  25. Hello, is it realistic of me to believe that I can work 3 hours at home for a 3 hour class during my MSW? For those of you who have done a master's program in social work, how many hours did you study for each class you had? PS : I have no field placement.
