English as a second language
Adelaide9216 replied to Adelaide9216's topic in Writing, Presenting and Publishing
Hello! I am already attending McGill for my master's studies. And I did my undergraduate studies there too. But during my undergraduate studies, I did all of my assignments and exams in French (students in Quebec have this right even if they attend English universities). -
Last Year - When do I start applying for jobs?

I've also seen a lot of my class colleagues get hired (well guaranteed a job) by their field placements many months before graduating. -
English as a second language
Adelaide9216 replied to Adelaide9216's topic in Writing, Presenting and Publishing
Hello, thanks for your insight. My university offers free (sponsored) English 1-credit courses geared towards academia. I've decided to register for one this term, and another one in the winter. And I'll probably register for other ones in the summer. I really want to improve my English grammar. It's going to be a little bit more work, but it will make me feel more secure when I will decide to which universities I want to attend for a PhD. I don't want to limit myself to my own region, there is a lot of interesting work that's being done across my country and internationally and it would be a shame to not benefit from these experiences because of a language barrier issue. -
Hello, that's what we did but there is only one systematic review we found on the topic. Our topic is getting "trendy" but doesn't have much litterature on it, and when there is, there isn't a lot of consensus or agreement on it as well. So it's complicated. But I guess that's the whole point of doing research on it and I am assuming that this is very typical when you do research. I'm just not used to it yet.

Hello, we're almost at the end of the process. We were supposed to finish the review in early September, but it's going to be extented to January. We'll do the writing during the Fall. Apparently, it was ambitious for my coordinator to believe that we would finish the entire process of the review in 4 months. Things are a bit clearer now but I still feel sightly insecure about this and what I am doing (which my supervisor and research coordinator already know). But I am not giving up. It's my first time doing something like this and I can tell that my supervisor believes in me and my abilities, so I try to hang on to that when I get discouraged.

Thank you everyone for your insight.

I am interested in mental health as well. Otherwise, I wouldn't do media interviews about it and share my own story. But I agree that it's a bit early to make a clear choice now. I was just thinking and being reflective about it. But you are right, it's important to keep options open.

The thing is that I get numerous media interview requests to talk about mental health and mental illness and everytime, I feel like I do not know enough on the topic to be called an "expert" on it, other than being an expert of my own experience and journey. That's why I want to do a PhD on that topic. I feel like there is always something missing in the interviews that I give.

Women's/Feminist/Gender Studies Fall 2017
Adelaide9216 replied to kekology4's topic in Interdisciplinary Studies
I am starting classes on September 5th, but I already have a lot of workshops next week so I am starting on Monday basically. I am also going through a depressive phase since this summer and thinking about school actually helps me feel less depressed.- 232 replies

Hello, is it realistic of me to believe that I can work 3 hours at home for a 3 hour class during my MSW? For those of you who have done a master's program in social work, how many hours did you study for each class you had? PS : I have no field placement.
-
Me too! I am a bit nervous because I have a lot of extracurricular activities during my first semester. I've always been active in my community throughout my entire studies from high school till the end of my BSW. I just hope the pace will be okay during that first semester.

Women's/Feminist/Gender Studies Fall 2017
Adelaide9216 replied to kekology4's topic in Interdisciplinary Studies
So excited to start this semester in two weeks! I have a Feminist theories class, a class on violence against women and another one on research methods. What about you? I also wanted to ask, does any of you know a researcher working on the intersection of race, gender and mental health as a topic? I've been doing research for many many weeks and I have not been able to find any expert on this specific matter.- 232 replies

Thank you for your insight. I'm glad I've joined this forum very early in my graduate studies because I learn a lot from all of you. So if I understand well, I should pick a research topic that make me "employable" sort of? Especially if I want a career in academia?
-
Sorry, I am not sure I understood this, could you clarify for me?
-
I agree that it might be a little premature. But the reason why I am asking is that I am applying next year, so I am starting to consider different options. Also, I am known in my community for the speeches I give on mental health and mental illness. So I am considering working on a specific area of mental health and mental illness since that's what I am already known for.

English as a second language
Adelaide9216 replied to Adelaide9216's topic in Writing, Presenting and Publishing
I would love to go study elsewhere in Canada or even in the States for a PhD. I feel like there is a lot of interesting research that is being produced outside of my province and across the world. If I would do it, I would need to start preparing for it now or as early as I can. But this language barrier thing refrains me from even considering moving away, especially since I have never lived on my own, I feel like it would be too difficult for me because I am a highly anxious individual. I feel like it would be too many stress factors (living on my own for the first time, getting used to living in a new city, being away from everything I know and starting a PhD, etc.). I don't know how the people who make that choice actually do it. -
Hello, what's the difference between doing a 10-page lit review for an assignment versus doing a lit review for a thesis? How do you select relevant article if you've only got 10 pages to go?
