  1. Hello, I am having an sociology exam next Wednesday. It isn't my major. I've re-read all the articles assigned for the class and made a summary of each of them but I don't know if that is a useful strategy. It's an exam on social movements. There are 7 different cases studies to which I have to apply SMT to it. Any tips? I feel anxious as it is my last undergraduate exam.
  2. Today was the last day to accept the offer for the CGS-M? When is the next round of offers out of curiosity?
  3. Hello, I am a new RA for my master's thesis supervisor. I've been working with her since the beginning of my undergraduate studies. I started this new work this week along with her research coordinator. We're supposed to do some kind of lit review (scoping study/scoping review) and publish an article something in the next couple of months. The thing is that I have never done this before, I am unfamiliar with the topic we're working on (even if it does interest me). I am feeling quite confused about what I am supposed to look for in the articles I find. They both told me to not pressure myself too much, but I still feel confused. Anyone been in this situation too?
  4. You do not seem too enthusiastic about it. You need to be very motivated in order to attend graduate school...
  5. Oh sorry. Assist which would mean "assister" in French. It means "attending". That's what I actually meant. Sorry for the confusion.
  6. Hello, I am applying for another scholarship in my departement. I am eligible for it, so I decided to take a chance. However, the criteria says "related to a research project, including travel for research purposes, but excluding travel and associated costs for conferences." My research project is already funded with CGS-M (SSRHC). I don't know what rational to put other than "funding my second year of study and help alleviate some of the study debt I have?" since my CGS-M is non-renewable. Is that a good rationale?
  7. That totally isn't my intention. I love this forum.
  8. I feel like the macro/mezzo jobs are mostly in grassroots community social work organizations or at the political/policy level. I was part of an organization that did both, with clinical work as well.
  9. Hello, Other than academia.edu, what are the best social media websites for researchers and student researchers? Thank you,

    Job talks?

Hello, I see on the newsletter of my departement a lot of "job talks". From my understanding, it's potential new professors that could be hired in the faculty, so they give a "talk" so we can get a taste of their research? Is it revelant for me to assist those? It seems like there are many of them in my departement. Should I attend those that are relevant to my research topic? Thank you,
  11. Hello, so you would apply in Fall 2018 in order to start the program in Fall 2019?
  12. I've submitted my proposal. I really hope I get chosen. I already have identified organizations for funding if I get selected. The local conference I am attending next Month took three months to get back to us in terms of who have been selected for presentations/posters. Do you believe it will take around the same time?
  13. My supervisor thinks it's a great idea! So I am going to apply to that conference and we'll see if they want to have me come over to their country to present.
  14. That's so cute @TakeruK! Thanks for sharing! I've decided to ask my supervisor about this. We'll see what she answers. I hope I can participate! I'm willing to take the necessary steps for it. And I'm pretty sure I can find financial help through my university and various programs.
  15. I am taking part in a conference in my city in the following months. I got funding for that, but it was in the city where I live, not so far away. But I saw another conference, totally related to my research's topic, lasting 3 days, but it would be in Europe and in 2018. I would be a 2nd year master's student when that conference would take place (so I would still have to finish and submit my thesis to get my degree). I don't know if it's relevant for me to participate in something like this, or if it's too early in my path to even consider it. I took part in the last edition of that conference (that was in my city in 2015) and I LOVED it. Loved it. I learned so much.
  16. Hello, Do master's students get often to take part in international conferences outside of their country? Or is it only for doctoral students who have access to funding for that? Thanks !
  17. I also have a question re: TAship as well. For the moment, I have a 10 hour/week guaranteed of RAship with my supervisor until the end of my master's studies. My career goal is to teach social work either in college or at university. So I wish I could have a TAship experience as well throughout my master's studies. Do you believe that doing both TAship and RAship in my 2nd year of study would be too much? Does anyone here do that? (I have zero classes in my second year except for working on my thesis and writing).
  18. Really good advice. I'm really surprised to realize that I've applied most of these when I wasn't even considering attending graduate school.
  19. Also, I would say having a clear idea of what I wanted to do as a research project. I began working on my research proposal in June when the deadline for admission was in mid-December. I got a lot of feedback from upper year graduate students in social sciences and from my professor. It even secured me funding to have been able to do this so early and to really have time to think about it.
  20. I applied to Université du Québec à Montréal, Université de Montréal and McGill. I was accepted in all three. I will be attending McGill.
  21. Good to know. Thank you for your answer!
  22. Hello, I wonder, what does your typical day or typical week look like as a graduate student (at the master's level)? I've made myself a studying schedule for next semester just to get an idea of what my weeks would look like. And even if I have only 3 classes during the week and 5 days without classes, I'm realizing that I have to put a lot of work into this program and that I won't have much free time throughout my studies. I'm realizing that I am a lot more autonomous in terms of how I manage my schedule (which is nice for me). But still, lot of work. Is it true that for every 3-hour class you have to put in 6 hours of work?
  23. Hello! I thought of maybe we could do a directory of relevant and useful books for academia in general on this thread. What do you guys think?
  24. Anyone here knows a good forum that is entirely focused on Gender and Women's Studies? I'm asking this because it could be a good opportunity to connect with other feminists in academia during our studies.
  25. In terms of the color for the background of the poster, is it preferable to have something typical (white and light blue) like most of the ones I have came across online, or is it possible to have something more playful and colorful? Would that still be professionnal-looking? Or is it preferable that all posters at the conference kinda look the same?
