  1. I've submitted my proposal. I really hope I get chosen. I already have identified organizations for funding if I get selected. The local conference I am attending next Month took three months to get back to us in terms of who have been selected for presentations/posters. Do you believe it will take around the same time?
  2. My supervisor thinks it's a great idea! So I am going to apply to that conference and we'll see if they want to have me come over to their country to present.
  3. That's so cute @TakeruK! Thanks for sharing! I've decided to ask my supervisor about this. We'll see what she answers. I hope I can participate! I'm willing to take the necessary steps for it. And I'm pretty sure I can find financial help through my university and various programs.
  4. I am taking part in a conference in my city in the following months. I got funding for that, but it was in the city where I live, not so far away. But I saw another conference, totally related to my research's topic, lasting 3 days, but it would be in Europe and in 2018. I would be a 2nd year master's student when that conference would take place (so I would still have to finish and submit my thesis to get my degree). I don't know if it's relevant for me to participate in something like this, or if it's too early in my path to even consider it. I took part in the last edition of that conference (that was in my city in 2015) and I LOVED it. Loved it. I learned so much.
  5. Hello, Do master's students get often to take part in international conferences outside of their country? Or is it only for doctoral students who have access to funding for that? Thanks !
  6. I also have a question re: TAship as well. For the moment, I have a 10 hour/week guaranteed of RAship with my supervisor until the end of my master's studies. My career goal is to teach social work either in college or at university. So I wish I could have a TAship experience as well throughout my master's studies. Do you believe that doing both TAship and RAship in my 2nd year of study would be too much? Does anyone here do that? (I have zero classes in my second year except for working on my thesis and writing).
  7. Really good advice. I'm really surprised to realize that I've applied most of these when I wasn't even considering attending graduate school.
  8. Also, I would say having a clear idea of what I wanted to do as a research project. I began working on my research proposal in June when the deadline for admission was in mid-December. I got a lot of feedback from upper year graduate students in social sciences and from my professor. It even secured me funding to have been able to do this so early and to really have time to think about it.
  9. I applied to Université du Québec à Montréal, Université de Montréal and McGill. I was accepted in all three. I will be attending McGill.
  10. Good to know. Thank you for your answer!
  11. Hello, I wonder, what does your typical day or typical week look like as a graduate student (at the master's level)? I've made myself a studying schedule for next semester just to get an idea of what my weeks would look like. And even if I have only 3 classes during the week and 5 days without classes, I'm realizing that I have to put a lot of work into this program and that I won't have much free time throughout my studies. I'm realizing that I am a lot more autonomous in terms of how I manage my schedule (which is nice for me). But still, lot of work. Is it true that for every 3-hour class you have to put in 6 hours of work?
  12. Hello! I thought of maybe we could do a directory of relevant and useful books for academia in general on this thread. What do you guys think?
  13. Anyone here knows a good forum that is entirely focused on Gender and Women's Studies? I'm asking this because it could be a good opportunity to connect with other feminists in academia during our studies.
  14. In terms of the color for the background of the poster, is it preferable to have something typical (white and light blue) like most of the ones I have came across online, or is it possible to have something more playful and colorful? Would that still be professionnal-looking? Or is it preferable that all posters at the conference kinda look the same?
  15. It's nothing. My current supervisor has written at least ten recommendations letter for me over the years! But I have to say, I have an excellent relationship with her. And it has been worth it because I have gotten most of the scholarships I have applied to. But they can make similar versions from one to another.
  16. Yes, Minerva is indeed confusing at first. You'll get used to it. And yes, for new graduate students, registration is on July 4th. I would suggest working and planning your schedule with this tool : https://vsb.mcgill.ca/vsb/welcome.jsp When you'll have to register on July 4th, all you will need is copy-paste the number digits codes provided by VSB in the Quick Add/Drop section.
  17. I did it the summer before I started working on my application. So the deadline was December 15, so I started emailing them at the end of summer before that. But that's pretty early, I must admit.
  18. Oh sorry. I just prefer having a discussion with people on this forum...
  19. Hello, what does having a "research chair" mean? And waht does Tier 1 and Tier 2 mean? I've always wondered.
  20. I've just installed Mint. It seems like an amazing app!
  21. If you are doing a Thesis/Research Based MSW, you'll have a supervisor that will help you with your research. I've prepared my research proposal with mine. But I don't know if it is the same process if you have a Field Based MSW, with no Thesis attached to it.
  22. I also had a prof refusing to do an recommendation for me. I had an A in his class, and he remembers me, that was just one or two years ago I have a feeling he doesn't like me, but I will never know why. First time this happens to me.
  23. Anyone here has good tips to save money on scholarships, TAship, RAship, etc? I'm terrible with that. I am heading to the bank today to have tips, because what I have tried so far doesn't work for me.
  24. Good idea. I haven't thought about this, I have to admit!
  25. And I am very impressed by him and his work, so I am "scared" to email him again.
