  1. Good to know. I already have a supervisor and since I got the CGS-M and have a lot of volunteer/work and a bit of research experience, I think I have good chances to get it. I will start working on my application this August. Fingers crossed!
  2. Amazing! Any advice ?
  3. Anyone here living in Quebec? I was not eligible for this scholarship when I first applied for my MSW, my grades were a little bit below what was required, but I was told that with my entire undergraduate studies, I am now elligible. Anyone here is going to apply to it?
  4. Hello! What are the pros and/or cons to choosing a different topic for a PhD program than your master's research topic? (that includes having different supervisors for the PhD versus the master's)?
  5. I wouldn't base my thesis entirely on newspaper articles, I'm just reading what I am coming across because it gives me ideas and an intro to my topic. But I've definetely heard people in some fields base their thesis entirely on newspaper articles primarly if they are doing content analysis (how an issue is being represented in the media and that is their thesis' topic for instance). In some fields, people study how mental health and mental illness or islamophobia is represented in the media.
  6. My university says in order to be admitted to a Ph.D, you need a minimum of a CGPA of 3.5 out of 4 at the master's level. So I guess aiming for 3.5 and higher is usual. The minimum to remain in the program is a B- (65%) but I would not say that aiming for a B- is the way to go.
  7. I was not specializing to become a medical social worker, but I did an internship in a hospital setting, just to have that type of experience and go out of my comfort zone and I absoutely hated it. It made me realize that I would never want to work in a hospital as a SW. But I have a few class colleagues that had a better experience than I did, some of them got hired right after their placement and graduation. I did another social-worky program prior to my BSW, so I did a lot of internships and I would say that it's good that you have a clear idea of where you want to go and work, but I would say to keep your options open because your idea might change along the way depending on what you are experiencing and as you are getting to know yourself and the type of social worker you want to become. Especially if you have not worked before in the field, your interests will probably evolve and that's alright. Good luck with your studies, social work is an amazing profession with lots of possibilities.
  8. I did my first poster presentation a few weeks ago. It went well. I did not win the student contest though, but it's fine. I'm happy to have taken part in something like this prior to my actual graduate studies. Thanks for those of you who gave me advice!
  9. Hello, is there a limit to the amount of external scholarships you can cumulate while having CGS-M? I just got a small scholarship, I am going to receive it this summer, and I am waiting for two other scholarships' answer as well. I know I have to report every amount that I get, but I just wanted to know if there is a maximum.
  10. I usually ask for last year's syllabi. Or I ask students who have taken the class prior to me.
  11. Yes, I agree with rising_star. I was told that when you're at the graduate level, you pick your university of study by choosing a researcher that specifically works on what you want to study. And that's how you decide where you apply. Maybe you should read what some researchers have written on your topic and base your decision off that. But I might be wrong, I am a very early graduate student. Some people here are definetely more experienced with these things. Good luck!
  12. Yes, I already started an EndNote Library with newspaper articles and other things that I came across. It's a good thing that my research topic is a hot topic in the media at the current moment, lots of stuff happening!
  13. Thank you for your reply. I guess I still have to figure out what works best for me. Now, I am trying doing 2-3 hours chunks two/three times a day with breaks in between and it seems to be working so far.
  14. Hello, I got my first job as a real RA this summer. I have to work 21 hours per week. Hours are extremely flexible, I mostly work from home. The thing is that, as a new graduate student, I haven't found my routine yet and I struggle with procrastination/motivation as this research topic for this job is unrelated to my master's thesis topic. Any tips or advice on how I should proceed to be able to complete 21 hours a day?
  15. I am presenting on June 1st. A little nervous, but since I am used to public speaking, it helps feeling a little bit more confident. What are the big no-no's and faux-pas to avoid while talking to the jury about my poster? I feel a little intimidated because I haven't even started my master's yet, and most of the other contestants have already done poster presentations in the past.
  16. Thanks I'm proud because when I initially started university, I thought I was not smart enough to succeed! lol
  17. I found a solution : printing the pp slide directly from PowerPoint. It worked.
  18. Yay! I graduated from my BSW with Distinction!
  19. Does anyone know how to improve the resolution of an image/slide from PowerPoint? It's for my handout. I have a smaller version of my poster on it (on a Word document) after recommendation of my professor, but I don't know how to make it look clear and readable. I just took a screenshot of my slide while it was in full screen. Thank you,
  20. I agree for Mac computers. I bought a MacBook Air when I got into college, so that was back in 2013 and it still works, it's pretty amazing. I also bought a planner from Blueline last week. It was a bit pricey, but it has everything I need (weekly view on one page with each day divided by hour, a place for a to-do section, and monthly calendar at the beginning of each month). I think I am going to use it a lot, I spent a lot of time shopping for an appropriate planner. I would also add that at my university, students are given antivirus and other types of programs (Office 365, etc.) at no cost or are paid through your student fees. So it would be worth a shot to take a look at what programs/softwares are being offered by your university.
  21. I heard that it's harder to get CGS-M than the doctoral scholarship from SSHRC. Is that true?
  22. I have a question. I am looking at different guides online on how to structure a scientific article for a journal. I am currently in the process of writing my first one, for a student contest with the results of a case study that I will also be presenting at a conference later this month. I am now at the Discussion section, and I find it a little bit hard.... basically, what I am trying to do is connecting my case study results with relevant literature that already exists that "proves" what has been highlighted in the case study. Am I doing this the right way? I am also unsure of how to go about for the Abstract section (less than 200 words).
  23. At my university, since they are the ones who are going to be managing the award, I had some forms to fill up and give to them. Maybe it's the same or a similar process for you.. I would ask your financial aid departement at your university.
  24. But I must say that I live with a high anxiety level on a daily basis. I still function and manage to do everything I need to do and I even go beyond, but I'm an anxious person especially when it comes to school and my professional life. Ironically, my anxiety makes me work harder because I am terribly afraid of professional failure. I have very very high expectations for myself and I am an overachiever. I know it is not always healthy but that's how I've managed to cope with a lot of trauma in my life so far and I guess it's healthier than drinking (which I don't do, by the way) or doing something that could be terribly self-destructive for me.
  25. Yes. I have struggled with mental health issues, but it has not affected my ability to study and pursue higher education. I am not saying it never will but the way it manifests for me since childhood has never hindered me from succeeding in school. But just to say that it is hard, but it's possible.
