Me too! I am a bit nervous because I have a lot of extracurricular activities during my first semester. I've always been active in my community throughout my entire studies from high school till the end of my BSW. I just hope the pace will be okay during that first semester.

Women's/Feminist/Gender Studies Fall 2017
Adelaide9216 replied to kekology4's topic in Interdisciplinary Studies
So excited to start this semester in two weeks! I have a Feminist theories class, a class on violence against women and another one on research methods. What about you? I also wanted to ask, does any of you know a researcher working on the intersection of race, gender and mental health as a topic? I've been doing research for many many weeks and I have not been able to find any expert on this specific matter.- 232 replies

Thanks! Good luck to you too I am starting officially on the 5th!

Thank you for your insight. I'm glad I've joined this forum very early in my graduate studies because I learn a lot from all of you. So if I understand well, I should pick a research topic that make me "employable" sort of? Especially if I want a career in academia?
-
Sorry, I am not sure I understood this, could you clarify for me?

I agree that it might be a little premature. But the reason why I am asking is that I am applying next year, so I am starting to consider different options. Also, I am known in my community for the speeches I give on mental health and mental illness. So I am considering working on a specific area of mental health and mental illness since that's what I am already known for.

English as a second language
Adelaide9216 replied to Adelaide9216's topic in Writing, Presenting and Publishing
I would love to go study elsewhere in Canada or even in the States for a PhD. I feel like there is a lot of interesting research that is being produced outside of my province and across the world. If I would do it, I would need to start preparing for it now or as early as I can. But this language barrier thing refrains me from even considering moving away, especially since I have never lived on my own, I feel like it would be too difficult for me because I am a highly anxious individual. I feel like it would be too many stress factors (living on my own for the first time, getting used to living in a new city, being away from everything I know and starting a PhD, etc.). I don't know how the people who make that choice actually do it. -
Hello, what's the difference between doing a 10-page lit review for an assignment versus doing a lit review for a thesis? How do you select relevant article if you've only got 10 pages to go?

Thank you for your suggestions. English is also my second language and I study at a English university. -

Hello! I thought I would start a thread for those of us who have been accepted and are starting the program this term. I live in Canada. I'm so excited to start my program, and am even considering a Ph.D afterwards.

Reflexivity/Positionality - being an outsider as a researcher
Adelaide9216 replied to Adelaide9216's topic in The Lobby
Thank you ! I am starting my master's in a few weeks, so I will definetly look into this. I'm glad to see that I am not the only one who feels this way and that other researchers have thought about this. -

Boston University vs Columbia Fall 2017
Adelaide9216 replied to Aspiring2BinSocialWork's topic in Social Workers Forum
Hello everyone, I am currently a MSW student in a Canadian University. I am considering doing a PhD in the us because I think there are a lot of interesting things happening for social work right now in this country. However, I worry a little bit because English is not my first language, and I come from a low income family. I intend to apply for scholarships but wonder of that is going to be enough. Any advice? I was also looking at Columbia and Boston.- 11 replies

Hello, can you combine a Fulbright with another scholarship (i.e Vanier or Trudeau)?

Did you also notice this or am I the only one?
Adelaide9216 posted a question in Questions and Answers
Hello, I've realized that I have a lot of friends who have done MAs, PhDs or are currently studying in one or the other in my field. It made me realize that they are my friends but that they might end up being my teachers in the next couple of years. It makes the "hierarchy" and boundaries quite blurry. Is it true? Has anyone else noticed this or have any thoughts on this? -
Anxious Nervous Scared About Starting Grad School
Adelaide9216 replied to MarriageFamilyTherapy's topic in Psychology Forum
Yes, absolutely. I am planning on joining a walking club in my hometown. I am very fortunate, there are a lot of beautiful green spaces near where I live. I am also planning on taking a 10 classes hot yoga membership so I can do a class whenever I feel more anxious or stressed. These are strategies that I've tried before, and that were good to me, and I am trying to put them back into place in my life. -
If I say that she is an expert on my topic, that I've worked with her since the beginning of my undergraduate studies, that she offered me funding, that she is extremely reknown, kind, accessible and a great listerner, is that okay?
