Were you in the PrISMS program or was this just funding from the university? I am hoping to accept my admissions to ASU, but am waiting until I have more funding information.

I was accepted to PrISMS! Sorry for the late reply but if you're interested let me know and I can give you some info!

  2. Absolutely play up Spanish in your applications! I did and tbh I feel like that plus my volunteer experience is what got my foot in the door.

If you're interested in bilingual/multilingual programs I'd suggest checking out programs on edFind! San Jose State, San Diego State, and Fullerton all have strong emphasis programs if you're looking to stay in Cali.

  3. My back up plan was substitute teaching or being a paraprofessional. Here in California it's relatively profitable ($160 a day I think, and there's a pretty good demand) and since I already had to take the CBEST for grad school, I figured it'd be fine. If you live somewhere where it's possible SLPA can be a really good career, if not lasting, especially for getting experience for grad school!!! Many of the grad students at my undergrad institution have told me that being a SLPA really prepared them for grad school!

I think ABA therapy is also a good route. If you end up really enjoying it you can go on and get a master's in BCBA if SLP doesn't work out!

I will say that it's good to have backup plans, but don't obsess so much over having back up plans A-Z that you forget that it's possible you'll get in somewhere!! I stressed so much about grad school and researched back up plans for hours on end, and I didn't even need it lol. It's good to be prepared for the worst case scenario but give yourself the benefit of the doubt too! :) Best of luck you got this!!!!!

  4. I have not done this but I would take some time to research schools that would accept grad schools credits from a different university. You'd then have to go through the application process I believe. You could also possibly contact programs you're interested in and more information.

    Best of luck!

  5. For me cost was the biggest thing, followed by interests. Unless you're planning to go on to get a PhD, ranking doesn't matter! When it came down to it the school I picked offered me the specialized training I wanted in multilingualism and a really nice grant package that will pay for a good chunk of my schooling. It also happens to be relatively high ranked, but that wasn't really a factor in my decision! I think for our field it's more of a balance between cost, interests, and ensuring you get the training you need (i.e. how hard is it to get a hospital placement, is there a good balance between patients in certain age groups, etc.)

As an answer to @kenz with the grant I have I'll be paying about 12K for my first year of school, 6K for the second (provided I get to keep my grant!!) for tuition/other school costs. Rent is around $500 but the grant will also provide me about $7,500/year for housing!

  6. I don't think there's any magic number. There's people on here that apply to 1 school and then there's people who apply to 15. I think you need to be aware of your financial situation (you'll easily be spending over $500 on the GRE and applications), where it is realistically possible for you to move, etc.

I would just take some time look through ASHA edFind and finding schools that accept people around your GPA/GRE scores! :)

  7. From what I've heard from grad students at my school, many of the postbacc programs at the large state schools are hard to do because the classes fill quickly and often are only offered once a year. So you may get stuck going for way than you planned since you have to wait to get into the classes. I'm not sure if that's 100% true for Fullerton but I know even the grad students there have difficulty graduating in two years due to how impacted the program is.

  8. Lol update on my dumb life:

Yesterday I got a call from one of the faculty members at Arizona State and they offered me the PrISMS grant. I'd applied for it a few months ago but was originally denied. The grant pays for all of the out-of-state tuition, half the in-state tuition, and provides me a stipend. I also get to study Multiculturalism/Multilingualism, which is my DREAM! With how much money they're giving me for the grant I'll be able to pay for the program almost entirely out of pocket, so I decided to attend ASU! I am honestly still feeling shocked but incredibly excited and thankful!!!

  9. I'm not sure if I'm getting at exactly what you mean, but I accepted to a school over a week ago and still haven't received anything asking me to make the deposit for my spot. I'm sure it's just a busy time and such, but I wouldn't start worrying about it yet! :) Or at least that's what I'm telling myself :P

  10. From what I've heard religion-wise Loma Linda isn't extremely shove-down-your-throat religious. They do have a medical ethics class that is centered around christian morals though I think, if that's something that would affect our decision. The area around Loma Linda has pretty dang cheap housing for California (~$500 for splitting a two bedroom). I've heard good things about the program itself, lots of great opportunities in the medical field!
