  1. @Torple oh nice! CONGRATS!!! If you don't mind me asking who was your POI?
  2. nothing is worse right now than receiving stupid spam emails about cat litter coupons. Or emails (thanks to taking the GRE) from schools that are like "INVITED ....to apply!". ahhhh
  3. I'm not hearing/seeing much from Berkeley yet so I'm assuming there hasn't been too many interviews sent out yet. It does say the 21st on the website but there has been 2 Skype interviews on the results page. Ahhh this is nerve racking.
  4. I was told by a girl who is now a graduate student at UCB that they send interviews RIGHT around Dec 21st like stated on their website. THE WAIT IS KILLING ME. (It was also helpful talking to her because her GRE scores weren't good at all and she got in. So I remain hopeful!)
  5. @loffire ahhh good luck to you! I was told multiple times it comes down to clinical fit. It sounds like your research experience is strong and will be competitive. I also applied to Berkeley and I'm freaking out hoping they don't look at my horrible GRE scores and just toss me out--- I have (and I am bias) quite an interesting background and strong SOP and LoR.... I really don't want to take that GRE again-- I did WAY worse the second time than the first and studied so much. That is my only worry on my application.
  6. hows everyone doing? Friends keep saying "Well if it's meant to be it will be" and I'm here thinking "OK, THANKS for that philosophical advice, but I'm still going to be a nervous wreck" (lol) @psytillidie I haven't experienced that situation, but I have experienced a weird situation where I was all set to go to England for my masters in dance therapy and 1 DAY before I left they decided to cancel the program entirely? It was super confusing. I had gotten accepted and suddenly all my planning and visa and everything was cancelled. I had the similar thought as you "This WOULD happen to me!" I instead got into CIIS for masters in expressive arts therapy and it turned out to be an amazing program and I am so glad it all happened the way it did.
  7. Well it's official! I just turned in my PhD application to Berkeley's Social Psych program. Program of Interest: Social Psychology PhD Schools: Berkeley Worried About: GRE (45% in verbal and quant, 65% in writing), only a year research assistant experience (Stanford and UCSF emotion labs), lack of publications (but 2 paper presentations). The fact that I only wanted to apply to one school Not Worried About: great master's GPA (MA in art therapy), 4 strong letters of recommendations (2 from close undergraduate professors, 1 from prior masters professor, 1 from senior clinical manager at my current workplace), 6 years clinical experience (including 1.5 years as a supervisor overlooking 10-12 therapists), 2 semesters of teaching assistantship in masters level courses, a strong personal history statement and solid Statement of Purpose. Now I sit here nervous for the next 3 weeks.......
  8. haha @Psygeek I know what you mean.... I had to write LOR's for 3 of my therapists I manage and some of the schools need documents to be printed with letterhead, then signed, then scanned blah blah blah. That in itself seemed extreme. The whole application process is weird. It kinda feels like a roller coaster. At first I was SO EXCITED- then got really anxious- then sad- then excited again- then anxious.. and now I feel like I am on the upswing of excitement as I am almost done with my application. Also seems to be a level of acceptance with where I am at and having aback up plan, etc. I am deciding to acknowledge my low GRE scores on my SOP and to emphasize my clinical experience as better evaluation of my characters and skill set. unfortunately my best percentile range was in the 65th % from writing, which still is below average for Berkeley. mehh whatever. I'm turning in all my materials beginning of next week! Also I did have a question--- For a writing sample, I'm thinking a 10 pager will do just fine? I have a solid paper from my masters on Autism and cultural needs/strengths assessment. 10 pages is usually sufficient? BEST OF LUCK TO ALL OF US!
  9. I am right there with you. I just took another test and have spent over 1000 dollars on test and test prep and ended up doing WORSE on the quant section the more I studied. How is that even possible?! I don't know. But if it makes you feel any better- I got a 145 in quant, 150 verbal, and 4 in writing. I already have my masters in art therapy with a great gpa, research experience, and 5 years clinical experience... so sounds like we are in a similar boat. I say focus on your LOR and SOP. But that's just me.
  10. ahhhh I did just as horrible on my GRE as the first time. 150 verbal, 145 quant, and 4 writing. Well whatever, turning them in and focusing on my other materials!
  11. Berkeley and Stanford are schools that are doing research the most similar to my interests. I know it's not good to only apply to a couple (and two VERY competitive schools at that) but I'm staying open minded and think if not this year then spend the next year doing more research. I've been meeting with Stanford faculty because I'm an RA at the emotion lab and they encourage me to apply next year instead and sound confident I can get in if I get my scores up... so who knows. Either way I don't have the luxury of spending a bajillion hours studying for the GRE because I've been juggling a full time job as a supervisor, two research assistant positions, GRE, and application materials. Plus I'm looking for a new job because the company is doing unethical practices sooo ALOT going on. I am hoping the fact that I have a lot of clinical experience, I am a little older than most (29) and have a masters in psychology with a good gpa will help bolster my application. Your application sounds pretty solid! I wish I had publications but only a master's thesis and my own undergrad research, both which I presented on at conferences. I am also emphasizing my travel experience, as I took a year off to travel and be an intern abroad in a psychiatric unit... I think travel experience is worth mentioning, so great that you are also highlighting that!
  12. Psygeek good idea! Yeah I realize the average scores last year were not incredible... so lets hope they don't place too much emphasis on it! I think that could help us out here
  13. Hi all! Well I am also deciding to apply this year for Fall 2018. My focus right now is Berkeley's social psych. ph.d program! I have a master's (3.7) in expressive art therapy, 5 years of various clinical experience (children's psychiatric unit in London, ABA therapist, Mindfulness therapist in nature setting for kids, school art therapist, and now program supervisor where I manage the behavioral therapists and design/implement treatment plans, assessments, etc), 2 research assistant volunteer jobs (one at Stanford emotional lab and another at UCSF emotion lab), 2 research presentations (one my independent research in the psychological and education impacts of art involvement and my masters thesis on the art therapy relational neuroscience model), a year as a teaching assistant in my masters program, and strong letters of recommendation. I retake the GRE Monday so hoping I can get some great scores to be competitive! Some of my areas of research interests are: the role of awe in neuroaesthetics, art therapy relational neuroscience model and emotional regulation, the creative arts process in groups and emotional processing, ecopsychology and emotional awareness... Really hoping I can perform well on this GRE. My first time around only scored in the 50 percentile on all subjects, so this second test MUST be better.
  14. I would say depends on the schools you are applying and overall fit with your research interests and the faculty whom you wish to study under. Also, make sure you really study for the GRE. I am also not great at standardized tests and retake mine soon. I got average scores my first try, but I need REALLY great scores to get into the school I really want (Berkeley). I have a masters (3.7 gpa), 5 years clinical experience, a year research assistant (stanford and UCSF) and 2 independent research presentations, and I am still really nervous I may get denied because of my GRE scores
  15. Yes, I am trying to be more productive in research. Right now I am a research assistant at Stanford as well as UCSF. Unfortunately I only have two research presentations, but perhaps having a masters and presenting a masters thesis helps? Ahhhh darn the GRE
