  1. My degrees are in Geography... All the research at both unis in Atmospheric/Climate science were in the Geography department. We had an atmospheric concentration as well as general, physical, and GIS concentrations. I'd encourage he/she to take some additional physics/chem if going with Geography.
  2. I had a few profs from undergrad that attended Penn State and they said when I spoke with who said that Penn State is notorious for sending out rejections/acceptances really late.
  3. @94AVL is referring to the main results page on thegradcafe... You can filter by different strings
  4. You should do what is best for you. My sister attended Berkeley for a PhD in Chemistry a number of years back... She made it through quals and performed very well academically and worked on fascinating research but she was totally miserable. She chose to leave. They gave her an MS and she moved into the business world and made more than 6 figures. Her job wasn't her favorite but she had way more time for herself and pursued her interests. During this time she found a field she was more interested in and went back to grad school (at a top 10 school in her field). She seems much happier now and leaving her program did not hurt her career or prospects going back to school later. As long as you have enough reasons to justify leaving to yourself. Going forward, if you can adequately explain your reasons for leaving, your career shouldn't be negatively impact of. Hope this helps. Good luck!
  5. It's not so much my educational interest but my roommate in undergrad majored in Agroecology. At our school the program fell under Sustainable Development. Sadly, my does not have a graduate program in SD. He ultimately ended up applying to UC Davis for their MS/PhD (http://ecology.ucdavis.edu/programs/agriculturalecology.html). There it's in ecology. He also looked at UCSC, too. Not my expertise but thats my two cents for what it's worth.
  6. @kpietromica My condolences. It looks like you still have a good list left! @Arca9ine Agreed! I didn't think the waiting would be this rough. It'd be easier to just be rejected and move on with things lol.
  7. Absolutely! I have friends that looked phenomenal in terms of grades, GRE, etc but we're rejected to programs because they didn't have a POI. Ultimately, you will be working for that advisor and if they don't know you or you don't have interest in their expertise it is really hard for them to consider you admission or funding. Reaching out and having a POI can seriously make all the difference. If they really want you as a student they can sway the admissions committee in your favor. Simply, doing so can help you to stand out from other applicants and can help you affirm that a program can be the right one.
  8. I'm most likely (still waiting on some other acceptances and funding) going to be attending the University of Idaho for grad school. I'm getting pretty excited. A couple of questions: Housing first - I will be 27 in the fall and I have (quite well-behaved, and active) dog. As such I'd rather not live in an large apartment complex with loads of undergrads. It sounds like places that allow dogs are somewhat difficult to find. Are houses/apartments particularly affordable if dog friendly in the area? Are there places in Pullman or Moscow that are more affordable but not just loads of undergrads? Food - I've been vegetarian for the majority of my adult life. How are the vegetarian options as far as restaurants? Do the grocery stores in the area cater well? Thanks
  9. How's the weather where you applied? Where I live (east coast) a bunch of universities closed a couple of days last week. Some that didn't may have had some complications logistically and graduate committees may not have met.
  10. Undergrad Institution: Medium-Large State School (decent program but not particularly well-known)Major(s): BS Geography (GIS Concentration)GPA in Major: 3.8Overall GPA: 3.7Position in Class: Not sure - Dean's List & Chancellor's list a few semestersType of Student: US Male Research: Social Demographics impacting Life Expectancy in the City of Baltimore Professional experience: GIS internship at a local municipality Planning Director/GIS Coordinator for a small town GRE Scores: Average quant, strong lit, good writing Applied to: University of Idaho - MS dendrochronology/fire ecology Penn State - MS pyrogeography/GIS UNC Chapel Hill - PhD medical geography / landscape epidemiology Appalachian State University - MS Hydrology I haven't heard back from anyone yet but am not yet too worried but am anxious to hear back. I keep seeing people posting about numerous applications (I can't believe how expensive that is). I just hope to get into one of the programs I'm applying to. I've had good interactions with POIs at all the places I've applied. I have pretty diverse experience within the field of geography but am a bit nervous that my research experience doesn't specifically line up with my interests relating to fire ecology and surface hydrology. Anyone else concerned about relevant research experience or think it much matters?
