  1. Thanks @loves2hike! I'm glad Moscow has some options. I've been a little worried about the housing situation. It seems to be less dog-friendly than where I currently live. Yeah, I'm ideally looking to live in a house or 1 BR apartment. Moscow looks to be cheaper than where I live so at least some options look to be a bit better. I hope your head starts feeling better!

  5. You could certainly look at biogeography programs but as @geo_JD says, specificity would help. You may be far along in your application cycle... So good luck if so!

  7. Unfortunately, the deadlines for most of the travel Grant's from AAG were due December 31st. GTU (Gamma Theta Upsilon) travel Grant's applications were due February 1st. Last year I think they might have extended the deadline... I think they give $200. It might be worth a shot to reach out if your are a member. Between that and some reimbursements you might not have to load too much on a cc. Good luck!
  8. Are you presenting your paper/have you already registered to go? The registration was the worst part for me. I'm not currently a student so I could pay the $195 + $65 for AAG registration and conference registration. Considering I'm bot presenting or anything I registered as a companion/spouse for $160. This made the most sense for me as I'm currently working in retail and just quit my job in city planning. I don't think it would that significant to not attend at this point in a career... I was in a similar boat to you with the last 2 conferences being in Boston and San Francisco. Our department offers more options and funding for regional conferences. I the case of AAG this year my (former) department is sending a van since New Orleans is drivable from here.
  9. My S.O. and I are going. She is presenting and has funding through AAG. With funding (including a travel reimbursement) it is reasonably affordable. We have a substantial drive still but we are located in the southeast. Did you apply for funds from AAG? I think it's too late to apply to get funds from AAG now... Are you in a grad program now? My uni has resources external of the department that undergrads can apply for. The College if Graduate Studies offers some other options.

  11. If you need any direction in Pittsburgh, it's my hometown. I have a sister in grad school at CMU too.
  12. @Sunspeechies There are definitely schools that may be interested. Your not being unrealistic. A 3.09 GPA is not that bad and people get into graduate programs with lower GPAs. Hopefully, your transcripts show that you have improved throughout your undergraduate and show strengths in speech pathology. Do retaken classes overwrite on your transcripts at your school? Some schools do this and some don't entirely but if they do overwrite and you get As on the retaken classes that could really boost your GPA and show substantial progress. As far as family issues and health issues... Admissions committee can be very understanding. You could mention it in your SOP/LOI as something you have worked through. Acknowledging it gives some level of context as to why there are hiccups on a transcript. You could definitely mention that nursing isn't your thing and how you found speech pathology. Are you interested in a master's or PhD? If you're really worried about your grades and want to do a PhD a Master's degree is a good way to get a boosted GPA for later applying to a PhD. It's also a good way to determine if you really want to go as far as a PhD without the time commitment. If you want just a master's, you should go for it! Hope this helps.
  13. Right?!?! As a Pittsburgh native, it drives me nuts!
  14. Yay for planning! I currently work as a planner for a local municipality. I'm looking away from the field but found it to be very rewarding. Good luck!

  16. Not a decision but my POI at Idaho said that he's put in a good word and that the committee will be sitting down on Feb 13. It's nice to be able to breathe for a bit.
  17. I've applied at a mix of PhDs and MSs Field/Program: Geography with a research interests in fire ecology and hydrology Schools: Idaho, Penn State, New Mexico, and Wisconsin Status? Nothing yet. Feb 1 is a common application date for Geography. I turned in all of mine by Dec 15. I'm hoping to start hearing things soon.
  18. Honestly, I will cry... Then get intensely nervous waiting for potential funding details. And... Wash, rinse and repeat.
  19. I've applied to a number of MS & PhD programs and my top choice is a research MS (w/ option to do PhD upon completion) at a school across the country. (The program requires a thesis and they do not take PhD applicants without an MS) I see that a lot of schools do Skype interviews. Visiting for an interview would be ideal as the school is so far away and somewhat remote a flight is pretty pricey, but if I am accepted I will foot the bill. Is it typical for MS programs to do phone or Skype interviews rather than flying applicants out for interview weekends? I can't find anything on the departmental websites and I'd think it would be rude to ask my POI or the graduate program director considering I haven't been accepted yet. Thanks!
  20. Another consideration is the environment you wish to work in. *A Prof of my told me to consider this when applying so I've not experienced this* Graduate with PhDs at private and Ivy universities typically stay in private institutions rather than working in public universities. It sounds like you'd be more comfortable NOT at an Ivy so you should do what feels better. Someone else can probably speak to this or correct me on it.
  21. I think you have to consider the programs and offer specifically... I'm not in CS so I can't speak to the programs. Have you visited? How have your interactions with POIs been? Boston is definitely more expensive than Salt Lake so funding is a consideration... Rather than just location, the program dynamics, research, and prestige are more important. You won't likely be there for the rest of your life so I'd choose the program that feels best. If all things come across as "even" or "equal" in the programs at Utah and Northeastern then I'd start considering which place I'd specifically rather live in. Hope this helps!
  22. Any others headed to Moscow? Anyone visit yet?
  23. Let's see if we can reboot this thread! It's not a lock yet for me but I've applied to Idaho for graduate programs in Geography for Fall of 2018. Anyone else headed to the Palouse?

  25. Have you considered geography programs? Schools like UNC Chapel Hill and SUNY Buffalo have phenomenal programs in medical geography. This can include landscape/environmental epidemiology and social determinants of health. The methodology is pretty different than an MPH: this includes a fair bit of GIS (geographic information systems) and spatial modeling. My undergraduate research was tied to medical geography: specifically investigating how social demographics and location can impact life expectancy... I heavily debated between doing an Epi MPH or pursuing medical geography.
