Indiana University Bloomington vs University of Washington
Sprint14 replied to ergative's topic in Decisions, Decisions
Also remember you are visiting during a nice spell of weather in the spring. Imagine how you will feel about bloomington when it's 90 degrees and humid or 20 degrees and snowing... -
Indiana University Bloomington vs University of Washington

If you want an urban environment you will not be happy in Bloomington. -
Yes I've talked to current students and they have all been very helpful. I am planning on attending the admitted students day(s) next month. I think my anxiety about which program to choose had been high and I'm reading too much into quick emails lol

Anyone waiting for CMU design I just received an acceptance to the MPS program
-
I don't want to make blanket statements because the program might be right for some students - but you can pm me if you want my opinion and experience
-
Has anyone been in communication with the department? I sent an email asking general questions and the response I got not only didn't answer them but was extremely rude (from Jo) I'm still waiting to hear from two other programs and the response really put me off of metals ?

I was a student in this program and can answer any questions if you have them

I added my acceptance to the portal

Not sure if it's handled the same - but I received a decision from the MS DAV this morning- 32 replies

I also applied to this program - I have some profile hits from CMU but I have no idea if they were from METALS or the MPS Interaction Design.

Here. This is my second application cycle. Started a program in the fall that wasn't a good fit and I guess I'm a masochist
-
If it means anything I believe the MFA CMU program is different and on the application portal it says recommendations for the design programs can be submitted up until the 30th -- so it's unlikely they'd make decisions before then

I was v interested in applying to Lifelong Kindergarten but looking through past acceptances on their website I couldn't find anyone who hadn't either gone to MIT as an undergrad or otherwise been previously connected to the program. It really seems like more of a job application than a grad school application ?

I'm not saying I'm the best candidate, but I am saying I'm a racist. -
Not technically an MFA but is anyone applying to interaction design at cmu? I'm thinking about submitting an application for the MPS but I can't find anything about admission rates online. I don't want to throw $75 down the hole if I have no chance.

I feel like this may be a stupid question - but my top choice of program had a deadline for December 10th, over a month before the others and I know from analytics they visited on the 18th. Since then I’ve reworked several pages and cleaned up the language. It’s driving me crazy knowing they saw a previous version. It’s entirely possible my status has already been decided and I’m worried I will come across as annoying/needy. Should I just let it go or reach out to the advisor I spoke to earlier?

Post here to get your worries off your chest
Sprint14 replied to Teaching Faculty Wannabe's topic in Waiting it Out
Worries: I had one app due Dec 10 and yesterday I realized I had a bunch of typos on my online portfolio AND I put the wrong tracking info on the index page so I don't know if anyone has visited. I went in and fixed both. It might be unlikely the committee has looked at any applications yet but I'm still not feeling good about it. sort-of Excitement: This is my second time applying to grad school and looking at prior applications I can see the weakness in my previous PS/SOP(s). These will be better as I am making sure I spell out why I want to go to THIS program and what I plan to get from the degree, future plans, etc- 274 replies

Hello - I sent some PMs but I am applying to design/HCI/Information programs and would be happy to swap with anyone. -
Profile evaluation for HCI Master's/ PhD.

Don't apply to the HCI/d program. The program changed directors and it's a disaster. -

It seems like their admissions has been a real s-show this year. I asked them about next rounds of funding and they told me second round is in late April or May - weeks after other schools have deadlines. If you are accepted expect to be billed for the entire 90k+ -

Did you check the apply web portal? Sometimes they don't send an email when your application is updated. -
He is likely not a troll. This is the honest to god way a lot of men in STEM and other fields think.

My two polar opposite program options both have major cons
Sprint14 replied to megtree's topic in Decisions, Decisions
When you take out 90k in loans you do not pay back 90k in loans. Doing some student loan calculator options; if you take out 90k in loans and have an usually good 5.7% interest rate, in 10 years you will have paid over 118k. The payment would be $968 every month for ten years. For a 15-year repayment plan you will pay a total of over 134k at $745 per month. Paying $629 per month you will pay 151k over 20 years. Private loans will likely have a higher interest rate. The undergrad I chose was an expensive private school in a desirable city - so I'm speaking of the after here. It's a bit ridiculous to do the "what if" game at this point, but seeing the money come out of my checking account every month and barely hit the principle is demoralizing. I did not fully rationalize how the great locale and shiny things were going to follow me for decades. Those four years I spent enjoying a nice city have meant that for the past ten years I've had to take less desirable apartments so I could put the difference towards loans. Europe is not such a glamorous place anyway when constantly worried about money and stressed about debt. -
"Let's just TALK about it..." Decision Edition
Sprint14 replied to Bayesian1701's topic in Decisions, Decisions
It's still heartbreaking to me that I got into what would have been a dream program, to have it so completely out of reach. I could have dealt with a flat-out rejection and moved on, but to have been so excited.... it's like getting dumped vs not getting swiped. I also spoke to someone in the program currently and they told me about some of the program's shortcomings. Which I know every program has it's faults and it is difficult to find negative opinions on ANY program. All you hear is students working for the admission's office and no one wants to plainly talk about how they went through a program that sucks. And even though they saw my (resume) and said what's lacking in the program wouldn't apply to me, it's made a hard decision harder. Gah!
