I think I shouldn't expect anything good happen to me anymore. Maybe I should just plan to apply again next year. After a good talk with a PI from NYU, she asked the committee on weekend and they said they won't invite me for a campus interview because of the research fit. I have tons of experience with cognitive development and they still think I'm not a good fit to the program. But I applied to Duke Neuroscience program with less than two months of experience with neuroscience and was still invited for a formal campus interview. For no reason I could understand. Is the application process totally random? I applied to 14 programs and only offered formal interview invitation at one currently. Also the other interviewees at Duke all have tons of experience with neuroscience. I'll try my best but personally I don't think I stand a good chance. I know I shouldn't get upset that early but sometimes I just couldn't control this feeling. It is still 3 months before I would know whether I'll be accepted into any of these programs. I can't imagine stay stressful for another 3 months. Wish you all the best in this process guys......

I know it's hard, but everyone needs to try to take a deep breath, go do something fun, and enjoy the holidays. Some programs, such as the program I attend, will not even begin reviewing applications until after the fall semester is over, meaning that the faculty will meet and extend invites to the applicant pool sometime early to mid-January. It's still a few weeks of waiting, but checking your email or worrying if you have not heard anything that you are not getting interviews is counter-productive.

Not at all, I remember when friends applied last year, the one that got a skype interview didn't end up getting an invitation to the interview weekend, and the other who didn't get a preliminary interview did. There might be a number of reasons a prof wants to have a prelim interview, for example two completely different reasons:

a.) POI who is working ahead of schedule and is really excited about an application
b.) POI who thinks the applicant is "on the fence" and wants to get a measure of the applicant before extending a formal interview

Hope this doesn't offend you but you sound rather entitled. You specifically said "I'd just like to help with what is needed", apparently that's data entry. If you don't want to do that then maybe go back to trying the directed study with this lab, don't give up on it if no one helps you. (To be fair I don't know the context so maybe you've stuck with it for a while before finally giving in). If data entry is what you're stuck with then make it into a learning experience for yourself - qualtrics has an API which can allow you to figure out a way to programmatically perform the data entry. This would be great since then it'd drastically reduce the probability of error during entry, then having come up with your fancy new way to enter data you can show it to others and teach others in the lab, which I'm sure would def up the interest in your membership in the lab. In additional you'd have taught yourself how to program (if you don't already know), and further still - now you have a valuable skill to take into your graduate studies if that's the plan.

If you do go to the professor in charge, go to them saying that you have a heavy workload and are getting too many students. Let them figure out why. Otherwise, it won't go well.
