    @pdh12 Congrats on the interview!
    RE: Seattle housing... I hadn't realized efficiency pods were legitimately a thing the first time they were mentioned (in this thread), but have just looked them up. Quite expensive!

    @pdh12 congrats on the interview!!
    i got an offer from the university of york in england today (!) - it's slightly less exciting because funding information isn't released until march so it's not really an actual acceptance, BUT it is still a thrill to know that someone read something i wrote and liked it!

    Definitely the latter, except to the extent that you'll be asked to speak in a bit more detail about things you mentioned in your personal statement. Even in academic job interviews committees do not ambush candidates. Remember, they're now recruiting you as much as you're applying to them.

    I ended up spending my two years in Seattle in the graduate apartment building - it was easy to get a contract while still living across the country and I am normally abroad on research during the summers and don't really have time to move. It's expensive, but not egregiously compared to the rest of the city, and is conveniently close to campus. But, by my second year I was feeling the financial impact of living alone. The U District itself is also not the coziest neighborhood - and you run the risk of seeing your students on your midnight ice cream/tacos/whatever run. If I end up staying for my PhD I'll probably move, which I'm not really looking forward to. (also the problem with the efficiency pod apartments here is that often they're worse than studios and lack their own kitchen, but you still have to shell out a grand a month!)
    I'm in Iceland currently. My MA thesis is a translation of a contemporary Icelandic poet and an article on the intersections of translation theory and queer theory, with a side of queer kinship studies. The Nordic countries are great, though often idealized in US media, and while I don't know if I'll ever live here full time I've basically been splitting my time between Seattle and here for the last three years and will probably continue to do so. Immigration can be tough, and with the rise of national populism movements across Europe the barriers might become even higher. It's a weird time everywhere.

    I'd appreciate any info you can give me!  I've been looking a bit and there are definitely things here and there I can afford, but no word on HOAs, so who actually knows.  I would rather own a shoe box to myself than share a bathroom and kitchen with a building full of people for about the same monthly cost.  These west coast cities are just getting to be completely unlivable on one income.
    I usually love moving but some of these locations are far more stressful to move to money-wise than others.  Of course, if everyone else can do it, you and I can, too.  Fingers crossed the move is the biggest stressor we all have come March or so!

    Hello everyone! I graduated in December 2017 with a BA in English. I am currently an AmeriCorps Tutor in Newark, NJ with MMUF, the Leadership Alliance, Sigma Tau Delta, and a variety of professional experiences under my belt. I was also a Semi-Finalist for a Fulbright Taught Masters. This is my first time applying to PhD programs, and it was definitely more intense than I expected - I learned a lot about my organizational skills in the process, and I am happy/proud to have finished everything with a bit of time to spare.
    A very brief description of my research aspirations: I hope to center my studies around magical realism and magical feminism in Latin American and Afro-Latinx diasporic fiction, poetry, and performance. I intend to evaluate how textual elements of magical feminism are physically manifested in performances, and how performative spaces foster the creation of writer-activist communities that are continuously in conversation with the original works.
    Regardless of results, everyone should feel accomplished for making it to this point. I hope that the new year motivates us all to stay productive with personal/professional projects in the interim - I know I am devoting some time this month to ground myself by re-establishing some long-term goals that will not be affected by upcoming acceptances and/or rejections. Sending love and best-wishes ?

    I swear I'm not trying to stir the pot, but according to the 2018 Acceptances thread the first person to receive a notification last year was a SUNY-Buffalo admit exactly one year ago today. So.....it begins I suppose

    For visual culture, I cannot suggest Radical Sensations by Shelley Streeby enough. Less of a contemporary analysis of visual culture as it is a late-19th and early 20th century look at sensational media depicting state sanctioned violence against indigenous and racialized citizens. Her overarching argument is that that these medias were disseminated throughout the world, and then they became transnational catalysts for social movements in the U.S., Mexico, and other countries.

    @dilby AH! The Favourite is incredibly excellent. I sat silently in the theatre for like ten minutes after it ended because I didn’t know what to do with myself. Seeing Beale Street this Friday, really excited about it.
    Where/how did you watch Burning? I’ve been looking for it everywhere and I can’t find it.

    @kendalldinniene I think if you come from a department that fully prepares their undergraduates for PhD programs/applications then you shouldn’t have any problems getting into a PhD program straight off!! That said, in case anyone else is looking, there are a number of funded MA’s, it really depends, like everything else, on your research interests and which department fits those best.

    Did you guys read that Buzzfeed millennial burnout article that went viral over the past few days? I was surprised that it touched on the academic job market and felt called out by how the writer knew her prospects after a PhD were slim but she felt she would be one of the lucky few (until she wasn’t). That definitely spoke right to my delusional self haha.

    I was in student government my last two years and every budget cycle we would joke about cutting the athletics budget entirely (the portion paid by student fees) and giving it to humanities instead.
    ...personally I was not joking...
