Fit is important but it is less important at the MA level where you are doing coursework mostly, so will depend on what is being offered. I think the point of the MA is to expose you to different things within a graduate-level context and by the time you finish your interests will be different.

I think this is important for me to keep in mind. It feels so hard to possibly turn down an offer than has faculty very closely aligned to my interests, but I do need to recognize that it is an MA program and I want to eventually move on to a PhD program so research fit is perhaps less important at this level.

fit isn't only about research; it's also about having access to a lifestyle that will allow you to thrive.

Thank you for this. This gives me a lot to think about. It seems like such a tough decision. I think I need to talk to a few students there to see how liveable that lower stipend is and if they have to pick up additional work to make it by.

  3. Sorry if this is wrong place to ask since I am referring to MA programs, but I wonder if someone could speak about how heavily funding played into their offer and if the regret that or not. A few of my programs are sitting at about 18k of funding, but the program that I have a closest fit to is at 13k (after a round of negotiating funding). I wonder how much worry I should place on the funding vs fit especially considering it is an MA program. It feels hard to accept an offer that is that much lower than the rest (especially given that it is a 3 year program, not 2), but also feels hard to not accept an offer that has closest fit. Any advice? Cost of Living estimates are relatively similar across the programs.

I am a 19th/20th c Americanist interested in queer/feminist theory! From what I can see, the faculty seems pretty stacked at Michigan in terms of Americanists. It's just a much bigger department, so naturally, I have identified more profs who I can envision myself working with. I need to double-check the queer/feminist theorists at Brown, though--I was mostly focused on the Americanist roster. Also geeking out at the prospect of taking classes at RISD. Thanks so much for the tip, and best of luck to you!! I've been rooting for you behind the scenes and was so proud/happy for you when that Yale acceptance rolled through :)

Richard Rambuss is one of the primer scholars in queer theory and early modern literature. Not sure if that is much interest to you.

Great, thank you for the advice! I will probably go with the stipended option. I did get tuition remission, mandelbub, at the other 2 schools, but I don't know if working a part time job will be enough to make ends meet, especially as I still have undergrad loans.

Just saw your signature. I did my undergrad at Lehigh so let me know if you have any questions about the program / school / town

  6. In my opinion, as someone applying to MA programs as well, it is ill-advised to go for an unfunded MA unless you are independently wealthy. This is advice I have received from every professor I talked to about the matter. If you already asked about funding and the programs said it is not available, I am not sure saying you got funded somewhere else would make any difference. Maybe somebody would have some different advice than me, but I say go for the one that is funded! Congratulations on all your acceptances!

    Another lurker here!

I have received tuition and a good stipend for an MA program and they invited me to visit, but nothing on travel expenses. How much of a faux pas is it to ask for a possible travel stipend? Thanks!

Absolutely not a faux pas! Just email and ask politely as you would really like to visit. If they have funding, they will offer it (maybe a portion instead of all travel if they have a tight budget).

BTW, so when everyone talks about portals, do they mean the application portal? Just want to make sure I'm not missing anything--none of my portals have been updated (acceptances or rejections), so I'm starting to think I'm looking in the wrong place.

Yes! I would say 70% of my schools use the same portal interface. When a decision is made, you get an email to check the portal. After logging in, there is a new option that says "view decision letter". Half of my acceptances have updated the portal and half still say "decision pending". Hope that helps!
