Question for people getting interviews!
Mickey26 replied to WhatLikeItsHard's topic in Psychology Forum
I'm applying to Canadian Masters/PhD Programs in Clinical Psych. It seems that professors don't expect undergrads to have much research experience beyond an Honour's Thesis. I've been doing research since two months into my undergrad, and have dabbled as an RA in the following fields of psychology: personality, social, health, and clinical (addictions). I've done 6+ conferences/am published. Profs have personally expressed to me the breadth of my research experience is impressive for someone in their 4th year. So perhaps my social psychology RA experience isn't related to my field of interest (addictions), however, it is still research experience. -

Woot some good news today!! Congrats -
First off, congratulations on your acceptance!! That is very exciting news and kudos to you As a first round Canadian applicant, I don't have this issue (Canadian unis don't seem to have clashing interview weekends as much as the States cuz fewer schools/we do our interviews via phone or Skype it seems); that being said, I would notify those schools that you definitely do NOT want to attend, asap-- you can be honest "I have been accepted at another institution" or simply just "Thank you for the gracious interview invite, however I must decline....". It seems the coordinators of grad schools are very kind and understanding, so if you're honest you got accepted to another program, they generally won't hold any bad blood and are more than happy for your acceptance. Please, if possible, do this asap so your interview spot can be given to other, likely also stressed-out, applicants Good luck!

Hey, I was accepted A list of ranked applicants were forwarded to the Faculty of Graduate Studies to be reviewed mid-Jan (I'm assuming they were actually reviewed today as another prof sent me an email being all like, you should come haha). Official offers will be sent out via snail mail, to be received end of Jan. Hope that helps -

Fall 2019 Clinical Psych Interview Invites
Mickey26 replied to clinicalpsych20192020's topic in Psychology Forum
They may not be comfortable with sharing initials to the rest of the world haha And I would imagine the profs may not want their decisions made public to the rest of the world via initials -
Ditto above, and if you were to email, it would be to your POI Good luck!
-
First off, congrats on making it to the interview round!--that should already be a testament to how capable you are. Take a deep breath and acknowledge that you are entirely capable of nailing that interview! Personally, (1) I started by looking at my potential POI's research--really, really know their research. They will most definitely bring it up/potentially ask you which research stream you are most interested in. (2) Know the program. Download the psychology graduate handbook if there is one. Read it. Wow them if they start bringing up program specifics and you know them already--it makes you look well-informed and enthusiastic. (3) Know your application. This includes being able to talk about your specific experiences (be it research, mentoring, extracurriculars), and if you wrote a research proposal as part of your application, READ THE ARTICLES YOU CITED, they test you! (4) Know what questions you want to ask. (Check out the first couple posts of this thread--sample questions are posted). ALWAYS ask questions. Take a deep breath, and walk in. You got this. Show them what you've got

Heyy, Good luck with your interview! Unfortunately, I'm still a full-time undergrad balancing coursework/thesis/RA stuff/etc., so I won't be able to practice with you. Here are some resources: See: "Section 3: I just Got an Interview...." It really helps a lot! Best of luck! -
How do I get co-authors and/or research help as a new professor?
Mickey26 replied to Christopher Binetti's topic in Research
As my colleague above reiterated, most undergraduate research assistants are unpaid; rather, they are happy to volunteer as RAs in order to gain much-needed research experience. You may have to teach them the ropes of how research is conducted, citation styles, what have you, but in the end, its a mentor-mentee relationship that is a win-win situation for both. (And yes, this forum welcomes everyone, including faculty members!) -

Fall 2019 Clinical Psychology Canadian Applicants!

I personally didn't apply to UBC (excellent school! but the POI I wanted to work with wasn't taking anyone until 2021 ) so ya'll will have to keep me posted re: UBC Fingers crossed for ya'll! Maybe they had a huge influx of applications this year? -
I find that ResearchGate is prevalent for certain disciplines only; for example, Psychology (my field) uses it quite a bit. Engineering? Perhaps not used quite as frequently. As Meraki reiterated above, it's like LinkedIn but for academics, where you can request the full-text of journal articles that you may not otherwise have access to.

That's a fair point! Check out the budget airlines (Flair Air??). Although I still find budget airlines in Canada are kinda unreliable sometimes, as they do go on strike and such. Keep that in mind haha
